    no well sort of. cubs will lose 4 off their numberS like 1 off division and 3 off wildcard or 2 off division and 2 off wildcard. Unless St louis overtakes Philly by then. In that case a milwaukee sweep over PHI doesn't help either number.

    This is silly. Hoffpauir is as important to Iowa as Pie or Hart. If they wanted those guys up they'd be up. Obviously the importance is Pie's development not Iowa's playoff run. Hoffpauir will contribute more this year, Pie needs at bats.

    29 games remaining X .624 winning percentage = 18.096 They're on pace for 101 wins. Thats not including their pythag. or the fact that they are hotter now than that .624. Wow. Just wow. Is this the best Cubs team of my life time? Ever? Our crappy 5th starter that we all hate has a 99ERA+

    You act like everyone is saying Hoff is the next coming of Christ. Most people are saying he's doing well in AAA right now and could probably help us in RF this year. Is he the answer to all our problems? Of course not. I would expect Hendry or whatever GM we have this offseason to go after a legit RF and maybe move Fukudome to CF. I don't see why you can't let Pie, Hoff, and Dubois complete for the LF/CF job in spring training and sign Edmonds as a cheap lefty bat off the bench. At that point you have two great backup plans, and I really see Pie and/or Hoff breaking out in the bigs next year. If DuBois or Hoffpauir are competing to be starters next year, we're going to have a serious problem. No kidding. What a horrifying scenario, including resigning Edmonds. A let out an audible wail. It's hard to say what is going to happen with the new owner and what-not, but I have to believe that this is the year for the Cubs. If it's not the year, oh boy. The future doesn't look so bright to me. However, I don't think Huffpauir, DuBois, or Edmonds factor into that future. Then you'd better hope the new ownership has very deep pockets. Dubois, I agree, probably should have left his name off, but why not give him the chance to compete. Pie and Hoofpauir are a different story. I really believe Pie will come through, but mostly I believe that Edmonds is a legitimate backup plan. I think September will tell us a lot about the offseason. This time last year, Soto was tearing it up in AAA, but no one really considered him a legitimate contender for a starting job until his awesomeness in September. If Hoff AND Pie don't impress this September, then I'll concede the point to you. but wait until the offseason to call insane, you might be surprised.

    lol at Z. Legendary character. Some very good players are easily forgotten, whereas some merely good players are remembered forever. Regardless of where you or his career stats ultimately place Z, even the casual fan will never forget him, and us die-hards will be telling our grandchildren stories of his uniqueness.

    How many starting hitters hit .366 let alone pitchers? How much more valuable does 70 ABs make Zambrano than say Dempster? wait a minute... he's a pinch hitter now too.

    Its more about the relationship of the "number to the remaining games. If the magic number is 18 with with 20 games to play then its too early. If the magic number is 22 with 38 games to play (see Anaheim, Los Angeles Angels of) then go for it. Also if you could go .500 and clinch at any point in the season, then yes.

    Except if the Cubs won this year, there'd be 99 years between championships. OK, make it 100 wins for AVOIDING 100 years between championships. Actually, it'd be 100 years between championships, from 1908 to 2008. There are 99 years of drought, though. oooh ....... BURN!

    regarding Lilly's performance: Any of you guys think that after the team using up the bullpen yesterday, lilly was instructed to pitch to contact even more than usual to conserve pitches and go deeper. on a grander scale, to things like this affect players' statistic over the course of a season?

    I refuse to believe that statistic. Straight from the mouth of Pat Hughes. I just can't believe that the Cubs in the last 63 years have been unable to win 8 in a row on the road. I mean I know the Cubs haven't had the best teams, but wow. :-k I swore ESPN said the cubs' downfall this year was that they were terrible on the road. it was until 8 road games ago, but then few teams do well on the road

    Indeed, but I wouldn't be so sure the Cubs would have pulled the trigger on Harden if Hill were replicating last year. If Hill was in the rotation all year Gallagher would not have gotten the ML experience that made him such an attractive bargaining chip. THus no deal

    Keep it coming. I'm watching the game, but I'm sure those who are watching on gameday really appreciate it! Didn't notice until you asked the question. Very nice for those of us in the hinterlands.
