  1. You can say it as many different ways as you want, you're still attributing it to a managerial prowess when there's no historical correlation between managers and those deviations. If managers had the ability to make that happen, we could measure it pretty easily and they'd be paid closer to 9 figures per year than 7.
  2. You kinda skipped a few years between bochy's titles in SF and his title with Texas. A few years where his teams were terrible and then no one wanted him to manage.
  3. If there is any difference among managers, it's not in in-game strategy, which is basically a non-factor in baseball. There might be something in their ability to help players prepare to perform better overall But given that the league is overrun with ivy League analysts trying to squeeze every last win per dollar advantage they can find, and we just made counsell the highest paid manager in the league with a salary that will buy you a decent veteran utility infielder, I feel confident that the actual impact of a manager is measured in fractions of a win.
  4. There is absolutely zero evidence that managers have an intrinsic ability to distribute runs better such that a team outperforms or underperforms their Pythagorean record
  5. OK? I don't see how that makes the distinction uninteresting. This is gonna be one of those dumb things where you're not supposed to say it because it feels like saying the thing ("The receivers were open and that was where the ball should go against that defense") is somehow absolving someone who should be blamed so people get all weird about you saying it.
  6. Because it speaks to what he's doing wrong. You don't think there's a difference between a QB making bad reads and a QB making bad throws?
  7. Justin Fields is not a bridge QB. He's not good enough to subject your team to if you're not dreaming on the upside, and he's so bad at operating the offense that it makes it difficult to evaluate other players. If he doesn't make a miraculous turnaround and make you think he's your franchise QB that you want to extend this offseason, he shouldn't be on the roster by the next training camp.
  8. That's fair and fine, but I still like to differentiate between "JFC nobody should ever try to make that throw" and "Tyson Bagent you personally cannot make that throw."
  9. Point of order: it's pretty much the same playcalling afaict. Bagent chooses to take those short throws. Sometimes at the expense of longer ones that might be there (or might not with his arm).
  10. Because it puts you in long passing situations where the defense is prepared to deal with the two things he does well: long scrambles and deep throws
  11. Yes. Bagent runs the offense and gives everyone a chance, but every 10th throw is a turnover. Fields plays Fieldsball. You have no idea what you're going to get on any given play. Could be a dime deep ball, could be a game-breaking scramble, could be a completely unnecessary sack.
  12. Honestly I think the decision to throw was defensible on all three ints. He just doesn't have the consistency in his throws to make them
  13. Still haven't seen the every throw for young yesterday, but I saw the highlights. Young really doesn't handle blitzes well, which isn't a deal breaker for a rookie but he needs to show improvement on it throughout the season or I would be nervous. Of his three interceptions, one was getting fooled/baited by a defensive back who jumped the route. The other two were the correct reads but they were brutal throws.
  14. $8m a year for a manager seems kinda dumb but it's not my money so go nuts I guess
  15. Fields hasn't been ruled out yet I don't think
  16. That's my doom boner scenario. All it takes is one or two fluke wins against one of the many other bad teams in the NFL and you play yourself right out of taking an elite qb prospect. Jimmie Claussen, Blaine gabbert, ryan tannehill, Mike Glennon, Teddy Bridgewater, Garrett Grayson, Paxton Lynch, deshaun Watson, josh Allen, dwayne Haskins, Justin Hebert, trey Lance, Malik Willis, Anthony Richardson. That's the list of qb3s in each draft since 2010. There's a couple of nice names in there but overall that's not the grab bag on which I want to be commiting my franchise for 2-3 years at a minimum. I hate QB hell.
  17. Self-fulfilling prophecy. Historically, trying to cheap out on lesser QB prospects is our problem. Trubisky was the first and only time we took the first or second QB in the draft since McMahon. It would be wonderful to already have a QB and use high draft picks for surer positions. But we don't, so we have to keep using them until we get one.
  18. I've been subscribed to a Panthers forum all season. Not posting just lurking. It's funny seeing them go through all the stages of bust qb denial (not that I'm saying young is for sure a bust.). Every single post could be copy-pasted from a bears fans about trubisky then fields.
  19. Would a tie help? I would rather maximize our chances of getting at least one of the top 2 vs. minimizing downside. Getting picks 3 and 4 would be a significantly worse outcome than, say, 2 and 10.
  20. I haven't seen the film yet but I assume he was bad. Thursday will tell us even more
  21. Fields has spent his career making every coach, receiver and lineman playing in front of him look worse, with the exception of Moore
  22. It doesn't have to be an accomplishment to be on par with fields. The Bears have scored 17 or fewer points in 15 of his 31 career starts.
  23. I mean, it kinda does in the sense that there's absolutely no chance they do. But I'm still not convinced he isn't the better QB. Why would today change my mind? Because he led the offense to 17 points and peed down his leg in the 4th quarter? That doesn't preclude him from being better than fields
  24. Young? Hard, accurate throws with elite anticipation. He needs to speed up a bit and not get fooled by coverages so easily
  25. Rookie QBs throwing INTs is not a big issue for me.
