  1. Nickle guy, possible starter, what do you guys think? He fell out of favor, didn't he?
  2. I don't think this went all that badly, if we get Groce. He kept dropping awful names in respect to Groce. Gill and Lickliter. Both of those guys never showed the ability to recruit. Groce has. I like the hire, if we do in fact hire him. Turner Gill was supposedly a good recruiter while at Nebraska. He had moderate success in the MAC.
  3. It's a crap shoot, but it's one Illinois has to take if they can't lure any big names in. And the difference between Groce and Semi-Famous Mid-Major Coach is probably not that large. Nope, they are all Lickliters, except Fran. Bout right haweyecub? I have no idea what this is supposed to mean. You are hating on Groce a ton. There's a pretty good chance he's gonna be successful. He has a good roster returning and he's a very good recruiter. if he keeps Jerrance on staff I think he will do very well. "Hating on him a ton"? Really? Illinois is a supposed top 10-15 program that was willing to pay $2M+ per year. It looks like they're going to hire a guy who wasn't considered by anyone 2.5 weeks ago because he beat Michigan and South Florida. They were consistently top division in the MAC and averaged 20 wins per the 5 years before he got there. He's finished 9th, 9th, 5th and 3rd and has a 34-30 record. And the great recruiter stuff is based on getting guys to go with Matta to OSU. Like that's been a problem since he left. Nobody knows what he'll do. But he's the kind of guy I would have expected Nebraska to offer $1.5M for. Not Illinois when they're willing to pay big.

Nope, they are all Lickliters, except Fran. Bout right haweyecub? Are you trying to say I think all mid-major coaches are like Lickliter? I have no idea where you would possibly be getting that from.

  6. So did Illinois have no interest in Frank? Mississippi State would have been a better job than South Carolina if he was going to the SEC, but maybe they had no interest either.
  7. Just give Frank Martin or Kevin Stallings $2.5M already. I don't get it.
  8. It's not like Ohio was awful when he took over or he really built something though. The 4 years prior to Groce they won 21, 19, 19 and 20 games with an NCAA trip. Groce won 15, 22, 19 and now 29 this year with 2 NCAA trips. No one knows what he will be. But if Illinois has $2M+ to spend per year on a coach and ends up with a guy based on 12 combined points over Akron, Michigan and USF, it's a pretty big letdown for their fans. In his best year, he did manage to finish 3rd in his division which is half of a one-bid league though.
  9. What does he rip Turner apart for?
  10. Fran mccafrey has a .566 career winning percentage, yet I imagine you think he was a home run hire for Iowa. 1. Illinois should be able to hire a much better coach than Iowa. It's a better job and they're apparently willing to pay like a top 10 job. 2. McCaffery's 5 years at Siena were a lot more impressive than Groce's 4 at Ohio.
  11. Seriously if you have the kind of money to throw around, I can't imagine you end up with this year's guy who is only considered because he made a Sweet 16 by beating Michigan and USF. No [expletive] way. In all honesty even if you just went through non-BCS coaches you would like, where would he rank? Would he make the top 15?
  12. Groce is kinda the basketball equivalent of the Turner Gill hire.
  13. As much as I would have been incredibly excited for Shaka or Stevens, there was always a small part of me that wondered whether Groce could turn out to be like Matta. Obviously Ohio State hasn't had a whole lot of trouble recruiting since he has been gone, but he did help to start things there. I know he isn't as big of a splash, but maybe his recruiting abilities will better fit Chicago than the other two would. I definitely think you are right about the gamble. I am willing to give him a chance as well. I would be less excited if it was just a coach who had some success at a mid-major, rather than a coach who has a reputation for being a good recruiter. Matta's 4 seasons before getting the OSU job: 102-31, 50-12 in conference play combined at Butler and Xavier. 3 trips to the second round and one Elite Eight. Groce's 4 seasons: 85-56, 34-30 in conference play, one 2nd round and one Sweet 16. The two are practically identical.
  14. Again Groce was a lead recruiter at OSU. Lickliiter couldn't recruit anyone. Understand the difference here Iowa fans? So Matta gave him the large bags of cash to hand to Oden and Conley? That's a big responsibility for Jim Croce. And we all know their recruiting has gone to [expletive] since he left.
  15. Seriously, what a lot of unlikable goons this turned out to be(and I'd have preferred Baylor to OSU). Do you guys hate Louisville/Pitino that much? Maybe it's because their win clinched two pools for me yesterday, but I don't mind this Kansas team all that much.
  16. If you're looking at Groce and Theus, you should probably just go with Alford instead.
  17. Goodman reporting that John Groce is being considered and is a legit candidate. That would be pretty cool
  18. There's no Duke though.
  19. There must be another Eddie Johnson right? You can't be suggesting the guy who played at Illinois and has been broadcasting for the last decade.
  20. Chris Collins, your chair is ready.
  21. Hey they've got no size or answer for Zeller inside. Let's run an iso for a guy who is 2-14 and has been awful tonight. Good call Roy.
  22. 245th in the country in possessions per game, tied with Illinois, Colorado State and others. I think he's been in the 300 range before too hasn't he? 327, 284, 292, 277, 218 in adjusted tempo. They've been 6th, 13th, 36th, 46th the previous 4 years in 3FGA/FGA. Sulley will have to reverse his stance on slow-paced godless chuckers.
  23. Or you hire Stevens and he follows in Lickliter's footsteps. lickliter continued recruiting mid-major players after he went to iowa, i doubt stevens does the same. And the guys who were actually decent all wanted to leave as fast as possible.
  24. That's a decent hire for them.
  25. I've always argued he has had talent. This year he had Jordan Taylor. He did a superb job. He's a great evaluator and developer of talent. Taylor was a 2 star and barely recruited, Ryan Evans was a wreck his first two years out of HS, and Berg is plain awkward. But look how those 3 have played this year. Huh? Taylor was a top 125 player and Mr. Basketball in Minnesota.
