  1. The start of college football season is so much more enjoyable when the Cubs suck. It is the one and only thing I hate about them being in the race. The last two years I've been able to just casually pay attention to the Cubs in September (and completely tune them out on Thursday's, Saturday's and Sunday's). I would typically watch every crap game that's on tomorrow night and go wall-to-wall on Saturday. Instead I'll watch the Cubs (until the 8th inning when the Iowa game begins) and probably miss some good stuff. Stupid Cubs. There should be no MLB on Saturday's in September and October.
  2. Very good. That and the fact that all of the pitchers reportedly loved working with him is what kept him around so long. Weird that no team wanted him. Why is it weird?

  4. Wow, amazing. You predict the worst every inning and every game so when you're right you say "Told ya so" and when you're wrong you just say "happy I'm wrong." I have no idea what joy or satisfaction people get out of that. You have no idea the joy and satisfaction I get out of the Cubs predictably sucking, more times than not. It's just such a miserable way to watch a game or do anything, I don't get it. These game threads have turned into everyone trying to be the first to say "game over" when we make the first out or give up a hit. I don't see the fun in that. We're in first place and playing meaningful games in late August. It's not as horrible as some think.

  6. Because there are so many factors at play, I don't think any evidence would be conclusive enough either way. Each instance depends on the makeup of your team, your bullpen, your bench and those of the opposition. All things being equal, it's just a strategical philosophy.
  7. And why do you think that is? They're in the business of driving up ratings and making money. Put a Blue Jays vs. Devil Rays/Royals game on Sunday night and you'll get awful ratings. You can definitely argue that ESPN and FOX have driven this Red Sox/Yankees mania. But the Red Sox and Yankees deliver higher ratings than anyone else. It annoys me too, but it's not going to change.
  8. I don't understand why this couldn't be discussed in baseball discussions.
  9. They were 1 game up on the Wild Card at this point in 2004. I was implying the lead in the division. We were completely dependent on winning the Wild Card. What's the difference? This year we're completely dependent on the division and have basically no chance of winning the wild card. In both years we were competing with roughly the same number of teams for 1 spot.
  10. This was posted in the game thread and backs up my assertion that it was the right call. Kendall is more likely to take ball four or hit the ball on the ground in that situation than he is to swing and miss. With most players I wouldn't make that move, but I would with Kendall. It eliminates the more likely outcome of grounding into a double play and also increases the chances of him getting a hit (even slightly) because the middle infielders are on the move. As was also mentioned, Theriot and Jacque aren't your ideal guys to hit a sac fly either. Good decision by Lou, poor execution by Kendall.
  11. Oh please. Yeah our offense going to sleep had nothing to do with it. Neither did the five runs given up by Marquis. Look it was a risky play. But I trust Kendall to take ball four or put the ball in play in that situation. I think those are more likely results than him swinging and missing. He probably swung at ball four which he doesn't do much. It happens. When you aren't scoring or driving in runs like you should, you have to take some risks sometimes.
  12. Why? Even if it works, I'm complaining. Yeah right. Yeah so, I'm the first to call out decisions that are bad even if they work We hadn't scored since what? The 3rd inning? Sorry, but that was not a bad decision, it was bad execution. Kendall couldn't execute the bunt, and then he couldn't execute with the runners moving. It's that simple. Why would you send the tying run with 0 outs in the 9th when he's already in scoring position. It makes no sense. To stay out of the double play. With most players I would not like that decision at all. With Kendall, I was in favor of it. In a full count he's more likely to take ball four OR ground into a double play than he is to strike out in my opinion.
  13. You cant do that with the top of the lineup coming up. I just think there's a higher risk that he grounds into a double play than strikes out in that situation.
  14. Well that was a terrible result, but I still don't mind the decision.
  15. that's asking for a triple play It is risky and normally I would hate it, but I trust Kendall. Lou does also apparently.
  16. Full count, start the runners. Kendall has an eye and doesn't swing and miss often.
  17. Sacrifice with Kendall or see if you can get into a hit and run count?
  18. Can you give a summary of what she/they said?
  19. Just because he doesn't strike out batters? He's not great, but he's a groundball pitcher who doesn't walk many batters. He has a career 52-44 record and 4.30 ERA. This is his 4th year starting for the Twins and he's basically had 3 above-average to good years and one terrible year. And yes Raisin is right. If we want Silva just for some long relief help, the Twins are going to ask for quite a bit. They could have/could still get more from a team desperate for a starter.
  20. if the cubs are comfortable throwing a defensive OF of floyd, jones and fox/ward out there in the midst of a pennant chase, i think they could more than get by with soriano, pie, burrell. With Pie in there that would be adequate, but I was talking about Jones/Monroe in CF with Pat and Soriano on the corners.
  21. The first thing I thought about when Bruce said that Lou gets upset when Murton gets away from what makes him successful? The reports that Dusty/Clines/Matthews were continuously trying to make Murton more aggressive and pull the ball more to enhance his power. Now under a staff that wants him to get back to what he used to do, he's expanding his zone and rolling over everything to the left side.
  22. I like Murton and want to give him a legit shot next year. With that said, I do not have much faith in him at all for the remainder of this year. His approach is bad. He hasn't driven the ball with any authority (although he gave me hope with those 3 HR) and he definitely isn't going the other way. He's pulling off everything and much of the time lately, he's looked like a RH Juan Pierre minus the speed. The RISP numbers don't mean that he's not "clutch" or can't be a run producer. But if you watch his AB's, I think it's plain to see that he's pressing like nobody's business when he's batting in a big spot right now. It's clear as day in my opinion. Yes those stats do tend to even out over a career, but that doesn't mean you can argue that they're just a fluke right now. His approach changes even more drastically in those situations and the results show it.
  23. I was thinking about this type of thing yesterday. Considering our current situation and the market this offseason, there aren't a lot of options to put together a productive OF for '08. One could be to trade Murton in a package for Burrell, move Soriano to RF and have Jones/Monroe platoon in CF. You've got a very good chance at getting an .800 OPS out of all three spots with the corners having a higher ceiling. I don't think the Phillies will be asking much for Pat this winter and would probably gladly eat some cash if we send Murt and a couple mid-level prospects. Of course this outfield would be dreadful defensively so it's not very realistic, but it's about the best, most realistic offensive option I can come up with. If we go with Soriano, Pie, Jones & Monroe/Murton we're going to need Lee to get his power back, and get solid production from the C spot. Then again Pie having a Corey Hart-type year would be just fine also.
