The point is they're both cheap, young players with good track records who we will have under our control for the next 4+ years. At worst you're probably talking about league average options in positions of need at a very low cost. When Dunn doesn't get us to the playoffs in his 2 month stay and we're left signing Darin Erstad and Kyle Lohse to replace those guys next year, it will cost more money and be a downgrade in talent. At which time you and others will complain about how bad this team sucks and wish we still had Felix and Rich. You have to get to the playoffs to get the World Series. We are tied up in bad contracts for the next 2-3 years and we hypothetically have a lock on the checkbook for at least the next season with the impending sale. The only hope we have to improve after this season are our minor leaguers and trading those minor leaguers. Yes we could trade for Dunn (IF HES AVAILABLE TO THE CUBS), but who is going to be the scapegoat when Dunn leaves after the season and you have to start Angel Pagan in the OF next year because you traded Felix Pie, Jake Fox, Sean Marshall, Carlos Marmol, and whatever other crazy stuff the Reds will ask for to trade Dunn to a Central team. Then what will you be saying? Oh well at least the Cubs traded for Dunn and we won 87 games and got swept by the Mets in the NLDS. I doubt it And we'll just keep enjoying not going to the playoffs. That's the entire point. In the current situation we have a better chance of being a contender by keeping Pie, Hill and Marmol around for the next 4+ years than just getting Dunn for a two-month rental. That doesn't mean those guys are untouchable. It just doesn't make sense to sell the future all for a 2-month rental who will downgrade other areas of the team and hurt us significantly in the future.

If the Reds weren't making insane demands for Dunn (and everyone on their roster), someone would have gotten it done or you would at least have heard far more speculation. 2. When Hill and Pie are both cheap and successful with the Reds (possibly All-Stars) and we're stuck trying to get mediocre, more expensive veterans to replace them, you and most others would have complained to no end.

Even in cases when it could be helpful, instincts usually get in the way. The one instance I've seen happen multiple times is where the batter is trying to sac bunt, pops it up and doesn't get out of the box. The fielder can let it drop, throw to second (because the runner is frozen) and then go back to first for the double play. The Cubs could have done it this weekend when a Rockies pitcher popped a bunt up to Lee and stayed in the box. It would have been an easy double play for Lee, but when you have less than a second to react and your instincts tell you to just catch the ball. Plus you're taking on added risk of an error.

That's the best lineup possible. Only complaint is having Jacque up in the 2-hole, but his .395/.452/.579 line in that spot will probably keep him there for a while. Hopefully Daryle can be at least adequate in RF.

I think there's a very reasonable chance that we can come up with an in-house option(s) that provides an .800 OPS for a low cost. i don't know why but the 5th inning is usually time to get nervous, and it sucks Because when you don't have great stuff or command the third time through the order is usually when it catches up to you.
