The criteria was different back then and inconsistent since war wasn’t emphasized. Ryan Howard won MVP in 2006 with a 5.9, 10th in baseball and third among NL first basemen behind Berkman and Pujols. Morneau won AL MVP with a 3.8. WAR. If PCA and Carroll were within a run apart, I’d bet Carroll edges him out based on triple crown stats.

I wonder what the lowest wRC+ is for a league MVP from a position player. MVP is basically a default Ohtani award like NFL MVP is a default quarterback award but to finish as a runner up he’d be at the bottom end.

Unless they trade Shaw, I think they’ll roll with what they have. The Steele and Horton injuries, not to mention Cabreras blister which could linger all season is as close to a death sentence as there is. Bregman and Swanson are the only 2 position players where there’s a possibility of a drop off from the back of their baseball cards due to their age. Can’t say for sure but won’t rule it out either. Bregman’s struggling to square anything up and it’s already June.

It’s much deeper than Counsell versus Murphy. Milwaukees success can be traced back to Maddens final 2 seasons as Cubs manager, coached by none other than 1X manager of the year and 3X runner up Craig Counsell. Murphy isn’t some 6 war manager, regardless of your thoughts on Counsell.

It’s time to admit that we hired the wrong guy from Milwaukee. Brewers General manager Matt Arnold has turned Milwaukee into perennial overachievers who defy projection models from a team previously under Davis Stearns that routinely overachieved and defied projection models.
