  1. You’re correct. They offered more total money for less years though at 3/$120. Would he have put them over the tax? Tom explicitly wanted to stay under the tax and the Red Sox offer was offer was higher in terms of AAV.
  2. I don’t know the exact details but I know the Redsox paid an extra $5 million with a player option after 2025, Tom didn’t want to pay the luxury tax. I think he put a cap on the total $ amount.
  3. Because You’re a fan. Did you do a slow clap when PCA caught the third out in the 9th vs the Padres like Tiger after making a put for a birdie in a PGA tournament because the variance Gods were on the Cubs side?
  4. That’s part of it but Tom vetoed signing Bregman. Even during the Theo years they never topped $200 million in any free agent signing and settled for Lester when Scherzer was the better option. Theo also had more young talent at the MLB level allowing him flexibility to trade for Quintana and Chapman. What you proposed is 100% true I agree with that but I wouldn’t rule out budgetary reasons completely. Cubs farm system isn’t exactly rich with talent. They want “sustained success”, “2032” and this entails prospect hugging at the expense of fully committing to a win now approach.
  5. Perhaps. Let’s see if he can sustain his aggregate production next season. And once again he’s needed especially for his defense because of a hittable rotation full of numbers 3 starters. Not to minimize his value but he’s a star if his bat returns or at least stabilizes to his full season owar.
  6. And or budgetary constants makes keeping future assets more important than ever. Tucker walks and you’re stuck in the same place you were in 2023 spending on 3-5 WAR players with lots of defensive WAR to compete if you’re without a Cassie/Bellesteros. If Tom insists on a fringe top 10 payrol then he’s probably thinking a cheap position player group will add more flexibility to sign higher impact pitchers/hitters in the next few years, akin to the Theo years albeit with less young talent.
  7. And MVPete hasn’t been a thing since July. Assuming Tucker walks, If you look at the 11 other playoff teams, do we have a player who’d be the best on any of the 11 teams besides maybe the Reds? Constructing a team around defense raises your floor and that advantage is constricted to days where the wind is blowing and facing anemic offenses like the pirates.to a degree. Unless they add a true TOR starter who Isn't reliant on beating FIP it’ll be more of the same.
  8. It’s a jack of all trades master of none group of position players. It’s Jed and Tom’s mo with the hope that one of the pre arb youngsters becomes that dude. Outside of Horton I don’t think any exist.
  9. I’d be surprised if they add an expensive bat. They definitely could use one but they’re set at every position group and have Mo Ball and Cassie as Tucker contingency plan and Happ and Suzuki in the future. Unless they packaged either of them in a trade for a cost controlled starter it just runs contrary to the front offices vision. I’d bet any key addition would be another starting pitcher.
  10. I agree with that. Busch was the most consistent hitter from march-September. Problem is his pas are limited with his platoon splits but was quietly our best hitter. How does Bellesteros project?
  11. I expect something closer to the 56-48 team post May when Tucker became human. 30 homers and a 120s wRC+ from the catcher position I don’t see a repeat of that, PCAs 116 wRC+ was likely an aberration, Mo Ball will replace Tucker and Suzuki will move back into right field. I expect growth from Shaw which is a positive and 2 months of no Berti/Brujan. A full season of Horton and ideally a fully recovered Steele will be a positive reinforcement. If they add a Valdez or Cease then I believe 90 wins is doable depending on the offseason.
  12. And 3 more low velo number 4 starters on 2-4 year deals. A combined 5 war is the equivalent of having 1 Max Fried and much cheaper too.
  13. It’ll most likely be a reclamation project. Don’t rule out Trevor Bauer.
  14. I chose the wrong wording there. Point is the Cubs will be without an elite middle of the order bat when Tucker walks and they’ll do little to replace Tuckers value with a combination of impact players like the Yankees. Instead of signing a true TOR starter like Fried they opted to strike money ball gold with Boyd and catch lightning in a bottle.
  15. Cubs 13 straight postseason games scoring 3 runs or less is an MLB record.
  16. Does Hesters kick return count? If or when they’re swept on Wednesday that’ll be 6 of their last 8 playoff exits ending in a sweep and 5/6. They really go down in flames.
  17. I’d bet they go Bellesteros to replace Suzuki at DH and move Seiya back to the outfield. With the expiring contracts after 2026 and the looming lockout I’m curious to see what direction the front office takes in terms of spending.
  18. And they used Sotos leftover money to sign Fried and trade for Bellinger. Cubs roster on the other hand is sort of a jack of all trades and a master of none.
  19. Cubs have enough “useful” pieces. That’s how they won 92 games. They need difference makers and lack true perennial all star talent on both sides of Diamond. Name a single cubs player who you could definitively say would be the best player on any of the other 11 playoff teams in 2025? Johan Duran would be a useful piece by my standards. Don’t count on it.
  20. 4 f cking hits? We knew the pitching staff would limit them but the bats just continue to disappoint.
  21. I’m convinced fields would look closer to Trey Lance than Mac jones in that offense.
  22. I’ll never understand why Bear fans wanted to keep Fields.
