  1. That's possible. Maybe that's when Seiya's agent brought up the DH thing, but they probably wouldn't admit that anyways. We dont really know who reached out first on this. If they can score Tucker then I say keep Seiya and trade Belli. They'll probably rotate guys anyways for rest. If Seiya doesn't want to play DH most of the time because he's worst fielder of the 4 then that's his problem. Who cares if people thought he was a good fielder in Japan, that's not applicable in the bigs. They could also trade for Tucker and trade away Belli and Seiya and use DH to cycle other guys and go get a TOR SP and an extra late inning pen arm.
  2. Non-paywall version: https://www.marqueesportsnetwork.com/seiya-suzuki-agent-expresses-discontent-role-with-cubs-trade-rumors-joel-wolfe-mlb-winter-meetings-2024/
  3. It means who cares if he doesn't want to DH. If he didn't whiff on routine flyballs and throw the ball 15 ft off target on most throws to home plate he might have a point.
  4. Is Seiya playing for the Cubs or for his next contract? Just checking.
  5. This is true. Jed is kicking tires on every nice car in the lot, as he should. Why wouldn't the Cubs be interested in Tucker if he's on the market?
  6. Tauchman signs with White Sox.
  7. Dan O'Dowd at the meetings on TV suggested Bellinger and Arenado to the Yanks, move Jazz Chisholm back to 2b. Sign Christian Walker due 1b, and some relievers. Not terrible ideas
  8. The only thing I could think of is the positional fit based on what we have in MLB and minors for DH and OF. They'd have to deal one of our mlb OFs and at some point a bunch of our blocked prospects. Not the most ideal positional fit but if they really wanted Soto they could make it work.
  9. Why are they clearing cap space? Because they want to add elsewhere and think they can replace Bellinger for cheaper than he's worth to the Cubs. If they clear cap space what positions do they want to use that most to upgrade? SP and the pen. Adding Puk isn't going to happen, that's too much IMO. Maybe a lesser reliever.
  10. I agree that Bellinger is less risky, but which pitchers available aren't risky? They just signed Matt Boyd to 2/29 at 14.5m AAV and he's even riskier and won't throw the innings. Walker Buehler is risky. Flaherty is risky. The older quality FA SP are risky due to age. The top FA SP all are risky signings too being pitchers and who will be years past prime age at the end of the contract, plus some come with a QO. Even Crochet is risky. Given Monty is on a 1 year, not especially old, no arm injuries last year, him at 23.6m AAV (luxury tax avg) is probably high but not terrible Given what others are getting Not saying I'd swap him with Belli though since it depends on what we have to replace Bellis bat and who's available at DH, OF, SP etc and their cost. Those calculations are complicated.
  11. Yeah but the xFIP is almost 2 runs lower than his ERA and he only signed with the team on March 29, didn't have a ST, didn't work in the winter with the team etc, fired Boras because of it. His whole season was messed up. I think Belli's contract might even be worse because of the extra year and 5m buyout next offseason.
  12. Amaya could also get hurt or struggle again. If they can grab 1-2 WAR for 10m or less on a position they had a huge hole last year then I'm happy they do that. The options are limited and Thaiss is a solid enough 3rd catcher especially if they could improve his framing a bit. Going into ST with Amaya/Thaiss as 1-2 is just too worrisome.
  13. Bellinger for Montgomery seems pretty even to me. Sounds like lots of interest for Bellinger out there.
  14. Imagine how much every owner hates Cohen right now LOL
  15. Took a few hours for the Dodgers to spend most of their Soto AAV money LOL.
  16. I'm not watching this team next year. Ricketts can't hang with the big boys.
  17. I want to spend Christmas at the Soto family's house this year.
  18. MLB Network just said there's apparently escalator's that could put this over 800m. Apparently Yankees offered 16/760. Imagine losing that bid. This is insane. Jed's gonna get that extension now hahaha
  19. So does this take the Dodgers out of the Soto hunt? Seems like it. Edit: Guess that's a yes.
  20. Exactly. If they can get their money's worth out of their signings they could project several wins better than 83, especially if they make a trade. Their pythag wins was 88, which i don't take as their "true wins" but is at least on the right side of encouraging. Also this convo is about timing and when they sign, which is different than who they sign or what the rest of the 26-man looks like. Cubs were "aggressive" on Matthew Boyd and fans aren't overjoyed just because they signed him early. I don't care when they sign another catcher or SP/reliever I just care who it is and how much they paid.
  21. Agree with all of this. With the caveat they avoid overpaying for lower talent signings, which Jed's had some issues with previously. Matthew Boyd pending.
  22. Hindsight is 20/20. Would you have taken a 5/120 or 6/145 deal instead?
  23. So you measure his ability to wait out a market by the number of wins on the board? That makes no sense whatsoever. Measure the moves themselves. He's done pretty well at the trade deadlines. Everybody wanted Belli back and we avoided a longterm deal. Jed and this org has had issues but I don't think timing a market is one of them.
