  1. Hard to say this early in his career but I think its easily possible that Cam Smith was up there with Matt Shaw as the top prospect in the system. He may even turn out to be better than Shaw. Paredes is a projected 3.7 WAR player and they traded 3 years of him for 1 year of a projected 5 WAR player, plus Cam Smith and Wesneski. We gave up all that for a 1 season improvement of 1.3 WAR on a team that already had 4 quality starting OF and a bunch of good OF prospects in AAA. I think fans are biased towards hitting/offense. If Dansby or Nico's value came mostly from the bat they'd be much more popular. Preventing a hit with the glove that doesn't score doesn't show up for that player in the box score and its not as fun to watch. Tucker is a really good hitter but WAR is the only thing relevant. It's true that we're better next year though. It's very possible Hoyer made this trade to try to save his job. I still don't quite understand the math on this move.
  2. It would be ideal for them if they had a bench guy who can play both 3B and 1B like Wisdom did, though hopefully plays both better. Didn't seem last year like the Cubs want Busch to flop between 3B and 1B. I think defensively he could do it if the throwing was adequate. Not sure I can see a Goldschmidt type or anyone worth much money since they probably have other priorities like SP and relief. We also have 5 MLB OF's right now and bunch of good hitting prospects in Iowa so no need for a DH signing.
  3. So if we compare Ohtani and Soto's deal, even if we assume as players that they're of equal ability (which they aren't) the Mets just paid 300m for years 26, 27, and 28 for Soto. 100m AAV. Seems pretty dumb to me.
  4. There's a world, probably not option #1, where Busch is playing 3B and somebody else is at 1b. At least he gives us flexibility to find either a 3b or 1b to replace Paredes. Bellinger can play 1b but he's likely gone, so then we have Ballesteros, Mervis internally, maybe Long especially later in the year? They can acquire an MLB corner guy via trade or FA too. Shaw now seems the #1 option at 3B and Triantos at 2b moving forward when Nico leaves. I like the floor on Triantos but not a high celling.
  5. If he's going to hit 35 HR in Minute Maid then WTF did we include Cam Smith for?
  6. If we assume they have about 40m after trading Belli then that's enough for Kelly, a good late inning guy, and a SP. They might go Buehler- level on the SP and go after an extra reliever, a lefty

  10. This trade is crazy. I'm enjoying the dopamine explosions. Celebrate today, go back to realistic brain tomorrow.
  11. Maybe Soto kicked Ricketts in the butt a little. But I doubt it haha
  12. We also have Mastrobuoni. If Madrigal was still here we could slap the NL Central into submission.
  13. Word is KatyPerrysBootyHole has their crack to the ground and hearing some rumblings. possibly from her own hole though.
  14. Just a reminder that if Ricketts would up the payroll by 25m and start playing closer to the big boys we wouldn't be having some of these discussions. They could extend Tucker and go out and get more talent.
  15. Interesting if true. Us trading two 3b doesn't make sense. Shaw more destined for 2b longterm post-Nico IMO. I think that deal is well good enough for Astros without Wesneski.
  16. Losing Paredes stings too. 3 WAR bat for the next 3 years that isn't making much yet. Tucker is a 2 WAR upgrade over Paredes for 1 year. Plus Smith. Tucker is a 2 WAR upgrade over Seiya and arguably Bellinger given one of them would go delete too if a trade happens. Who do the Cubs play at 3B is the real question. Much easier to replace OF or DH than 3B. A hole at 3B plus questions on Nico's health makes the infield more iffy. This is more complicated than " let's get a star bat".
  17. The equivalent to the Red Sox prospects the Cubs would have had to give (and beat) to get Crochet would have been roughly Shaw and Cam Smith (2 mid 1st round picks) graded at "55" by MLB Pipeline, plus two 45-graded prospects, so e.g. Wiggins and Mathis. That's a solid haul for only 2 years of Crochet. If the Cubs really like their best prospects I don't blame them for holding on to them. If we're looking at the next 2 years some fans will be upset we don't have Crochet, but over the next 8 years or so we might win on that. We're all just frustrated that the Cubs have been mediocre the last few years.
  18. Whomever he gets traded to will assume his production as well. Every team cares about both.
  19. Just a note that I didn't say the Astros wanted all 2 or 3 guys as mentioned. My point was those guys are valuable to us too. Point of the trade should be that we're better from it and same with Astros and we might not get there in a deal.
  20. If Bellinger only made 10m he'd be more valuable and would bring more back in trade. Every GM cares about surplus.
