    Milner really isn’t a bad pick up. He pitched in 70 games last year and can be effective. However, at 34 he is going to bring the average age of the Cubs up a bit. I know someone who will have an issue with that.

    Is Michael Kopech healthy? Wouldn’t he be worth a shot. Instead of Suarez for $16M a year, why not Fairbanks and Kopech for that same money?

    Honestly I am mixed on Robert Suarez. I was only using him as an example of a player the Cubs are supposedly interested in. I was just making a point that if they have real interest in him, Imai and Bregman, as a major market team they shouldn’t worry about getting all of them and going over the LT line.

    Then you took it wrong. I know why they won’t sign all those guys. Doesn’t mean I agree with their reasoning or that they are right to limit their spenskng to under the LT line. I specifically said as a major market team the LT line shouldn’t be a salary cap for the Cubs. I am not suggesting they go to $300M+ or be the Dodgers. I am saying their payroll shouldn’t be capped at the LT line. By not spending they are refusing to take advantage of the only advantage major markets teams have….. the ability to spend money. Signing Imai, Robert Suarez and Bregman takes them probably into the top 5 teams on spending. Since they are a top team in generating revenues I see no reason they shouldn’t also be a top 5 team in spending. And, with all the guys coming off the payroll at the end of next year, if they really need to lower payroll for ‘27 they can. With a new CBA we don’t even know if they will have to lower payroll.

    The Suarez I was referring to is the relief pitcher. I want no part in the 3rd baseman.

    Cubs average age was raised a lot by old pen arms who aren’t on the team any longer. While that may have brought their average age to the highest in the league, the bulk of roster is not that old. They certainly are not the youngest, but they are far from old. Most of the Cubs age came from guys who are that important or not on the team any longer. Pomeranz, Theilbar, Brasier, Turner, Kelly brought the average age up quite a bit. And only Kelly is back.

    There is no contradiction. It is actually 2 true statements. To simplify for you: Cubs won’t spend beyond the first level luxury tax so they won’t get Imai, Suarez and Bregman. 1st truth Cubs are a major market team so they shouldn’t use the first level of the LT as a salary cap for the team. They should spend what they need to spend to get the players they want without fear of going over the first LT line. 2nd truth

    I don’t doubt Bregman interest is real, but I doubt they get him. I think the best bat they will get would be Okamato. If they do that and get King or Imai the pen is going to suffer. Maybe they can add Fairbanks. Honestly, the fact that they are counting dollars to try being under the LT is very annoying. There is no reason they shouldn’t get Imai, Suarez (RP) and Bregman this off season. Go over. So what. They can get under in ‘27 and they are a major market team for christ sake!

    Then you don’t do Gore. You move to the Marlins for Cabrera, or another term for another pitcher. I’m not advocating for anyone at this time. Not even suggesting they should trade for a cheaper controlled staring pitcher. I am just saying IF the Cubs did sign Bregman, it would stand to reason the pitcher they got would come via a trade. And, for me, that trade wouldn’t include Shaw. Go with Cassie, Brown and, if need be, additional B level prospects and see what they can get. I would imagine if they signed Bregman they would already know they can get a pitcher in a trade. And if that is the case, I hope Shaw isn’t involved.

    That is the most likely use of the money. But they could sign Okamoto, Suarez(RP) and Fairbanks and give themselves absolute.

    I have come around to agreeing with you on that. I wouldn’t offer Shaw in a trade for any pitcher with only 2 years of control left. But if he can be had for Cassie and maybe someone like Wicks, Brown or Assad I would be fine with him. They wanted Shaw at the TDL. But thjngs changed from that time. Shaw got more valuable and Gore less. They can get Bregman and keep Shaw. That would be what I would hope they would do, if they got Bregman.

    I never felt that way about Thome. At 23 years old he hit 20 homers in 321 AB. He was probably leaner, but guys to naturally bulk up too, as they age. I don’t recall him ever being mentioned as a possible user. I think he was just a big guy who hit a lot of homers. But I guess I could be wrong🤷

    Regarding option 1, the Cubs did offer Scott a 4 year deal around that money last year so I don’t rule out offering Suarez an annual around $16. King for $20M annual, Suarez for $16M then the bat for $8M. That puts them around the number they are said to be spending.

    What would be a more desirable off season? Option 1: sign King or Imai, Suarez(RP) and Refsnyder or Andujar Option 2: sign King or Imai, Fairbanks and Okamato Option 3: Sign Bregman, trade Cassie and Brown for Gore, Cabrera or Ryan and sign Fairbanks i think each option comes in close to the same salaries, give or take a few million. I realize the trade might not go exactly how I am suggesting. So pick whoever is needed to make that trade for a pitcher. Regardless, which option is better.

    I would be fine with King or Imai, Suarez(RP) and then a right handed bat who can play 1st, 3rd and DH. Maybe if they went with King for $20M a year, Fairbanks for $9M a year they can get someone like the 29 yr old Japanese third baseman.

    Abrams only has 3 years of control. And didn’t the Nats sent him down last year for disipliary reasons? I seem to remember something going on with him. Is him at 3rd base really that large an upgrade over Shaw? Maybe short term it is, but losing Shaw who has 6 years of control and Wiggins who also has 6 years of control and the adding 2 outfielders who also have 6 years of control left is too much.

    Guess it is possible. But he would have to make the 26 man roster all season. Not very likely.

    Phillies were said to be discussing non tendering Bohm. They have been trying to get rid of him for years. Now signing Schwarber they make be looking to dump some salary. Obviously if he cost anything if real value a trade isn’t happening. And it was just an example of a smallish trade, anyway.

    Me neither. But he could be a right handed bat to DH and also play some first base. I said it could be a small trade. I consider adding Bohm as the top RH bench bat/part time corner infielder, part time DH a small trade.

    If this is true it could mean the Cubs trade that may happen soon will be for a bat. To be fair, Rogers said a trade soon. He didn’t say a major deal. Maybe it is for Bohm or someone in that level. Then they sign Imai or King later. Even if Rogers is correct it doesn’t have to be a major deal.
