    We doesn’t appear to be too good at bunting for a hit. I am not sure he would bunt at a high rate if getting on base any more than he does swinging away. He can definitely try more often. Might being corners in a little which could result in a ball going through the infield because guys are playing in. And maybe he even gets a good one down. But he definitely shouldn’t do it too often.

    With all due respect, how can you say anything about the Dodgers, Phillies and Padres? Have you watched them all year? If you have you will see that the Cubs record since their hot start is pretty similar to the Dodgers(better, actually) and the Phillies. Padres have done better than the Cubs since July, but overall are not better. Mets are another playoff team who has stayed pretty close to 500 since the beginning of July. All teams are inconsistent. I am sure your concerns about the Cubs are similar concerns of each fan base for their team. For the record, I have the same concerns as you do. Cubs are a flawed good team, just like every other team in the playoffs. Our concerns may come back to bite the Cubs. Boyd and Horton might be done by the playoffs. They offense might struggle. Most likely they won’t win the WS and it will be a result of one of those issues or the pen will blow a series. And then we can all say they just were not good enough. When in reality, they are. They just will not have played well at a bad time. Happy Labor Day and Go Cubs!

    How is this different than most years with the Cubs? My guess is it is no different than any team, most years, but I don’t follow other teams. Hasn’t this been the complaint about the Cubs the last decade, at least. Isn’t all guys not hitting all at once what causes slumps almost every year for almost every baseball team. It definitely was an issue the last few years. So I have no idea how you could have never seen it before.

    This is what I have been saying for days now. They can win. Will they? Probably not. But 11 of 12 teams won’t win. But all of the team in the playoffs can win.

    I’m going to go on a limb here and say if you cherry picked any 80-85 game stretch of any team in baseball this season, maybe with the exception of then Brewers, you can find a stretch they played 500 ball, give or take a game or two. So does that make them an 80-84 win team too?

    So if you are saying there are no great teams, I agree. But the Cubs are among a a group of 12 good teams who can win the WS. Period. Most likely they won’t. But they can. There are 18 teams who can’t say that.

    But what about the handful of other playoff teams doing the exact same thing? Are they more a team who wins 84 games or are they more like their start? Why are the Cubs strictly an average team who got lucky to be 16 games over .500 after 80 games, but the Phillies are good because they were also 16 games over .500 and no better than a little over 500 since. Or the Dodgers who weee 24 games over 500 and since then played under 500 ball. Cubs are what their record says they are They are a good team with flaws that will win 90 games. They could win in the playoffs just as easy as any other team who is in the playoffs. Will they win it? Probably not. But I would say that about every team who will be in the playoffs and be right 11 of the 12 times I say it.

    Don’t know all teams schedule but I know the Yankees are 6-1 against the white sox and Nationals the last 7. Padres just lost 2 of 3 to the Twins. Brewers played Dbacks and Giants in Milwaukee for 7 of those games. I am pretty sure the Mets just lost to the Marlins. It happens. I would have been happy with a 6-3 trip. But 5-4 isn’t the sky is falling bad. Just not good enough to gain in the division.

    Dodgers were 24 games over .500 after 86 games. Been under since. Phillies and Mets have also played pretty close to .500 since that time as well. So are all those teams slightly above average and overachieved early in the season? No matter how or when you win games, if you win more than 90 games you are not slightly above average. You are good. Good doesn’t mean not flawed. Good doesn’t mean you can’t play poorly. But good does mean you can beat anyone.

    I just used a random date of July 3rd to check the standings. At that time the Cubs were 17 over .500. Phillies were 15 over, Mets 12 over and the Dodger were 24 over .500. So basically none of those teams has exactly lit it up since then. Dodgers are under .500 since then. So did those teams overachieve in the first half? And now they are not very good? I am not disagreeing with you when you say they haven’t played well. But someone has to win in the playoffs. So I guess it has to be either the Padres (who are 2-5 in their last 7) or the Brewers. I think when anyone watches just one team they tend to see their flaws. I think all fan bases feel the same way about their team as you do, the Cubs. I agree with you also on GO CUBS.

    His last 3 starts before today, have been good. I mean, they still should hit him. But he is pitching better lately.

    BABIP gods really hurting him this one. They have 2 hard hit balls. He has not been great lately. But this game is very much not a true reflection of how he has pitched.

    Maybe, but typical the negative responses just move the goal posts until the team finally loses. And, besides that, even if they played San Diego and got eliminated that doesn’t validate the opinion that they CAN’T beat SD. It just means in that particular series they didn’t. Doesn’t mean they are not good. Playoffs are a crapshoot. Especially this year when there is no dominate team.

    Exactly. Can’t help what the Brewers are doing. Can only beat them when we play them. And we did fine against them. Cubs can beat any team in baseball. But the reality is, they can also lose to them. Doesn’t mean they didn’t have a chance. They obviously do.

    I think they would, if they signed Santana. I don’t necessarily like signing Santana, but if they did I can’t imagine they wouldn’t do it with the thought he can help in the playoffs. And I don’t see they not having Turner on the roster come playoffs after touring his team leadership all year.

    PCA definitely needs a reset and to sit a game or 2. But I think he will play in Colorado. I really don’t want to see Castro in center at this park. Get home and give PCA some time off.

    Not even going to argue the comment here. Just going to point out this is the typical negative response that will, most likely, eventually be correct so the poster could come back with “I told you so”. They weren’t good enough. Never mind the record. Never mind stats that suggest the Cubs are near the top in all offensive and pitching categories, the eye test says they are not good. So what if they are 20 games over .500, they struggle to beat teams. I mean the Rockies suck and they have struggled every game they played them. Doesn’t matter they are 5-0 against them. 🤷 Again, not arguing with Papa Cub. It is his opinion and fine that this is what he sees. But I am pretty sure if he or any other poster watched almost every game if all the other teams he suggested we couldn’t beat there would be a similar post about that team not being able to beat any if the good teams at some point during the season. And the truth is, most likely that post would be correct too.

    That is fair. He still is a very solid SS. But he hasn’t been as good defensively this year as previous.

    Disappointed with his defense? I mean maybe not what he is in his best seasons, but I really think people need to watch games other than the Cubs. They will see a lot of plays not made that we, as cubs fans, take for granted.

    The people complaining about Brown sucking are most likely the same ones who complained about Jason Adam and Jerome Estrada. And they will be the same ones who complain when Brown is a great bullpen arm somewhere else. I am sure they complained about Palencia last year, too. Most fans don’t have the patience to watch a guy struggle. But then they will be the first to criticize the Cubs if they let that guy go and he turns up good elsewhere.

    He will be 33 before the start of the next season and most likely is strictly a DH. He will get a lot less than Tucker. Maybe not annual, but he isn’t getting that long a contract. Maybe 5/$175M.

    Turnbull doesn’t matter now or in the future. Birdsell doesn’t matter now. Taillon said he probably could have started this game, just giving himself a little more rest to make sure he doesn’t hurt himself further. I do worry about Palencia. Hopefully they can get Horton and Boyd some rest. They are pretty much secure in getting either 4th or 5th team in. So they can mix and match some pitchers now to try having everyone healthy for the playoffs.

    Pretty sure it will be Cubs versus Padres. Hope it is at Wrigley, but that’s very much in question. I will say, IMO, whoever wins that series will beat the Brewers.
