I read he gets $1M if he gets to 80 innings, another $1M at 90 and another at 100. Has that been reported incorrectly? Thr issue is the structure. Not the money, IMO.

I wanted Imai too. But not if he can opt out after one year. That is a deal breaker to me and apparently the Cubs FO. I am fine with that. But now they need to do something else. There is time and players there. So let’s go!!!!!

If that is your take on his actual deal compared to what you suggested, fine. Your right. You were very close. We just have to not pay any attention to the actual structure of the deal and then your guess was so, so close.

Nico will cost a lot more than he is making now. But willl any others? I would think Happ would be close to the same. Maybe Suzuki too. Not saying I want all those guys, but I am not doom and gloom for 2027 and beyond. That said, I agree that it does not make sense to sign Imai to the deal he got. That is one more pitcher who can be a FA. Not a good spot.

I like the idea of signing Bregman and trading for a starting pitcher. Maybe even a similar deal the Cubs did long ago when they traded Cashner for Rizzo. Use Cassie and see what young pitcher you can get. Soriano? Weathers? Something like that. Or, put a package together for Cabrera. Either works for me.

Not really. The deal he got is much better than what you suggested. Way more player friendly. He isn’t locked into $64M over 4 years. It is only close if he sucks. And I don’t blame Jed for not agreeing to an opt out after 1 year.

They can keep Shaw and still sign Bregman. Shaw is utility for a year and then goes to second base. I am pretty sure this isn’t going to happen. But if it did it wouldn’t mean they don’t believe in Shaw.

Also, if he isn’t going to get another starter he should have spend more on a better relief pitcher and/or needs to spend big on a bat. We shall see what he does.🤷

If this were true they would have given Imai a contract where he can get out after one year. Wouldn’t that have played into what you say their plan is?

That is possible. Plus if you believe Steele will come back, Horton will be in the rotation all year and Wiggins can be this years Horton, you can see the FO having that opinion. I don’t. I think they have to get someone else. But if the FO believes this then they better sign a big bat. Bichette/Bregman/Bellinger/Tucker all need to be in play.

But when you sign a pitcher to 4 or more years aren’t you always taking a chance on being stuck with someone who doesn’t perform? Gallen has been better than all those pitchers, with the possible exception of Steele. If the Cubs believe whatever issues Gallen has last year they can fix, why wouldn’t they give him a 4 year deal? And, if they don’t want to deal with a one year opt out, that is what the have to do. Or make a trade.

This is kind of what I am hoping for. Go a little over the LT, pay a small penalty and go under the next year. I prefer Cabrera because of an extra year. But this is what I would hope happens.

If I had to guess I would put Gallen at about a 35% chance, a trade about 30%, Suarez 10%, lesser starter like Giolito around 10%, whiff altogether 10% and Valdez 5%.

Not if he is paid as if last year was a fluke. If he is offered 4/$88M why does he need an opt out after 1 year.

Actually you said 4/$64. His bonuses are strictly innings pitched. $1M for 80/90/100 innings. So if he pitched well he will make $21M next year, not $16M And he can opt out after the first year., which means he doesn’t have to take 3/$48 the next 3 years. I do not believe you said anything about that in your 4 year proposal. This is much better than what you suggested. If he is good he is in Houston 1 year. To me, that is huge for him and a deal breaker on any Cub offer.

Why stop at Goldy? Why not Bregman? Might be why we hear a little about Bregman and nothing on Tucker. Cubs might prefer a right handed bat over Tucker.

And that note, is average velocity of 93.5 below average? I wouldn’t see he throws hard, but I would think that’s average.🤷

I can see a Shota type deal, but larger AAV. Maybe 2 for $40M then Cubs option the next 3 @ 66M total. If they say no he can take 3/$55M. This gives him a guarantee of 5/$95M. If neither works he is a FA. I doubt he is much lower than something like that.
