  1. Since we are going down the road with Jed just signing who is left or taking cheap options and not giving him any credit for the signings (not you I am talking about, but others) we should also add Boyd. While he wasn’t a guy who fell to them, he was a cheap option for a starting pitcher. And that worked pretty well, too. So he should be credited for that as well instead of criticized for going cheap. Seems when things don’t work Jed is a fool for not knowing it won’t work. But when it does work Jed got lucky….
  2. Is this meant to be a recap in case we were not aware of this, or is there a point you are trying to make? Pretty sure everyone here knows what the off season has been up until now.
  3. I just think the Bregman talk is overblown. I am not sure it is a topic. Again, just my opinion. What you say is very reasonable. I just don’t see it happening.
  4. I think if you take Bregman’s name out, you are correct. Bregman will not happen, regardless of what they end up with in the rotation. Of course, that is just my opinion, but I don’t see him here🤷.
  5. No problem. I thought we were on the same page.😬
  6. Did you mean to quote me? Or did you misread my comment or maybe I said something confusing. I said AFTER King there isn’t anyone worth going after. Thawv had Valdez, Suarez and Imai and said “maybe” King. My post was meant to suggest King is definitely an upgrade but after him and the 3 guys Thawv mentioned, I agreed no one else is a upgrade over what they have.
  7. If the group of Cubs fans you talk to are like mine, men in there 60’s, simple truth is that group of people don’t like anything. Their stance on pretty much everything is negative. They also still view baseball through the eyes of how it used to be played in the 80’s. I know. I have a lot of those same friends. While not everything the FO has done is great, Jed is probably a top 10 POBO in baseball. And he is exactly the type of leader Tom wants. It is perfectly fine not liking Jed. But using your friend base as validation for your opinion does nothing to make you case. Again, I know this through personal experience.
  8. In free agency, I agree that after King there isn’t an upgrade for the staff. There might be a few 3’s or 4’s in a rotation (Giolitto, as 1 example), but that really isn’t what they should be aiming for. The aim should be higher. But there is a trade route too. And there, he can find a few guys.
  9. I like Cabrera as well. He actually has 3 years of control, which I also like.
  10. This would work for me.
  11. Andujar is a guy I have mentioned in the past. I wouldn’t mind him if they spend money on Imai and maybe Keller so they had to short the FA bat.
  12. No it wasn’t. Cuzi said “if Jed didn’t go far enough to get Bregman LAST YEAR, when his contract was up and he was trying to keep his job, why would we think he would do it now, while he is safe. So your response does not make sense. LAST YEAR he wasn’t safe when it came time to sign Bregman.
  13. I agree. I really don’t think it matters if they get a pitcher via trade or FA. They have to get a pitcher. The bat is an afterthought. And it isn’t going to be in the Bregman/Bichette range. Hell, if it is they might as well go all in and get Tucker. And we know that isn’t happening.
  14. I know a lot of people will be critical of this, but I wouldn’t be shocked if Ben Brown took over the Keller role in the pen. He could be very useful for 1 inning. And maybe even multiple innings. They might be done in the pen, which means they would have enough money for King or Imai and still sign Okamoto.
  15. I agree with you on this. I don’t see Bregman as a possibility, at all. I think the best bat they would realistically consider this off season FA list is Okamoto. And if they got Imai, I doubt they get Okamoto too.
  16. I guess they can trade for Cabrera, Gore, Ryan or a few other options to get the starting pitcher. Then maybe sign Okamato and a decent pen arm or rein and it still be a solid off season. But that is threading the needle.
  17. I am sure they have a plan on top of contingency plans. The issue I have is them actually executing one of them. I am sure their plan is not punt the rest of the off season. But that doesn’t mean that won’t happen. If they want Imai and don’t get him and then go to plan B, a trade for a pitcher that could back fire too. Maybe the pitching trade market hardens. Asks could be too high. They can pivot to the pen and that pride is too high, or all options are gone. I really don’t see them in in Bregman. Doesn’t make sense to me unless they can trade for a controlled pitcher. But as I said, maybe that price is too steep. I am not saying this will happen. I am saying they are playing a dangerous game of musical chairs. The music might stop without them having a chair to sit on. It absolutely could all still work out fine. But there is many ways this off season could turn into a complete bust.
  18. I actually agree with you that he doesn’t want long term deals that take guys to later 30’s. I just don’t think what the Cubs did with Soriano has anything to do with it. I also don’t think they think twice about Heyward either. I just think Jed is very cautious and doesn’t ba e the stomach for having a guy at the end of his career on a bad deal.
  19. Really think Brown or Wicks moves the needle for Gore, if their first priority is pitching? I think if a team wants pitching as the main return for any high end player, they want young prospects or someone early in his career with solid upside. Cubs have 2 pitchers like that. Wiggins and Horton. And I wouldn’t move either for Gore. I see Brown and Wicks as most likely a 3rd piece in a trade for Gore. Maybe a second if the Nats really like one of those two. But if they want a pitching heavy return, those guys won’t get it done, IMO.
  20. Cubs don’t fit then. I don’t see Horton or Wiggins being traded in a Gore deal.
  21. Of the Cubs could get Gore without trading Shaw, Horton or Wiggins and only use either Cassie or Ballestaros (not both) as the first piece, I would be all for a Gore trade. Somebody like Cassie, Rojas and either Assad or Brown would be fine with me. If that doesn’t get Gore I would see about Cabrera or Ryan. Maybe not all those guys. But the highest valued young guy I would want them to deal is Cassie. Not interested in dealing Shaw, Horton or Wiggins.
  22. While I absolutely want the Bears to start fast and don’t stop, the last 2 weeks the Packers have faltered at the end of the game. Bears were outplaying them when the game ended. Packers got lucky to hold on. Broncos took over late too. I think if the Bears keep it close at half the coaches will figure out how to win this one in the second half. For the first time in years, I have confidence in the coaches to have a game plan that works after half time. I also have confidence in the QB to score late.
  23. Like Swanson? And wasn’t Heyward 27 or at most 28? Aren’t all FA at least that old? I just don’t see why what Hendry did 20 years ago should have any affect on what Jed does now.
  24. You’re leaving out they won 97 games the following year with a very good team. Soriano was fine.
  25. ESPN has Keller listed as the 36 ranked FA, ahead of Pagan, Finnegan and Maton. All who have signed bigger deals that 2/$12. They estimate Keller at 2/$22. I think that is much closer to reality. MLB has him ranked 26th, ahead of Rogers, Finnegan, Fairbanks, Maton & Helsly. Many who have signed for more than 2/$12 already. MLB has him at 3/$36M. So there you go. 2 other sources showing a much higher value. Do you really want to stick to your sources of info?
