  1. I agree. The best team did not include working Morel at third during the season. It was best for the team for Morel to DH.
  2. I also don’t think he wanted to mess with Morel and put him at 3rd during the year when he was doing fine at DH. I know the consensus opinion is the Cubs have given up on him playing third. And they very well could be right. But I haven’t given up the idea. And if he could that would solve one position cheaply. That would allow for either Ohtani or Soto plus either Hoskins or an Alonso trade and still sign a quality higher priced starting pitcher and maybe a trade for a controllable one like Woo. If they did that without dealing Morel they would be losing some of that minor league talent they have. Of course if it’s Ohtani and Hoskins signed as well as a FA pitcher, rather than trading for the others, there would be only 1 trade of minor league talent. If only Morel could play borderline average 3rd base.
  3. I guess they can trade for Cease without Moncada if they want to give up Morel and maybe either Cassie or Alcantara. They would still be able to make whatever other moves they need as well, including either Ohtani or Soto.
  4. I don’t know. I doubt they get Yamamoto. Maybe they get the lefty from Japan. Moncada is a bit pricey, but that is the reason they can get Cease for a lower trade value. I think Moncada is worth a one year risk. Next year is a team option. So if he sucks you let him go. I think there is still room for Ohtani and another solid pitcher. Let’s be real here, Cubs are never going to get Yamamoto and Ohtani. Maybe instead of Hoskins they go with Belt. Save a little money there too.
  5. What is needed to get Cease? How about if Moncada is added? He is negative value. So would Morel and maybe Ben Brown get the Cubs Cease/Moncada?
  6. If they can live with Burger’s glove I wouldn’t mind him. Lots of power and years of control. Just not sure about him at 3rd. Another guy, if he can play 3rd, would be Polanco. If the Cubs think he can handle third he might be my top choice because he might not cost as much as Burger, in the way of assets. I would rate Polonco 1st, maybe Moncada and then Burger, when taking into account salaries, what yiu lose to get someone and time you can have him.
  7. And 1st baseman.
  8. Stop being so logical….😀
  9. The annual isn’t as much as I thought. Maybe that is a good sign when it comes to signing other FA pitchers. Maybe Yamamoto takes a similar deal?
  10. I disagree with you. It isn’t nothing. Maybe not a huge deal. Maybe the team he is signing with in CA has to come up with more money to make up for the tax loss. Maybe it isn’t a huge deal, but it is something.
  11. I orefer Hoskins over JD mainly because JD is a DH. I want another DH here. If they got Ohtani or Soto DH is taken.
  12. I wouldn’t give SD Nico, Triantos and Drew Gray for 1 year of Soto.
  13. I want either Ohtani or Soto as the big acquisition this off season. JD Martinez is strictly a DH. So until the Cubs are out on Ohtani and Soto, I am not interested in JD. He is a decent fallback, but it would be a little disappointing if they ended up with him as DH. As for Turner and Hoskins, I agree with everyone 1908 said.
  14. The issue with JD and Turner, somewhat, is they are strictlybDH. Hoskins would play 1st. Maybe Turner could as well. But I like Hoskins better, both for his bat and glove.
  15. Yep, it has been proven you don’t have to win the division to be in the World Series. But the NL team in the WS is also in SF division. I just don’t believe SF has all that great a chance at the playoffs every year because of how tough there division is. Cubs, on the other hand, “should” dominate and very well could dominate if they decide to spend like a large market team that they are. Of course the Dodgers, being the most likely destination of Ohtani, can not only claim they could dominate the division, they have proved it for years.
  16. I don’t know if it matters to Ohtani or not, but he has to consider with the Dodgers he shares the spotlight with Betts and Freeman. With the Cubs he owns the spotlight. Also, he has been in LA for several years. We have no idea his thoughts on the city. There is a report that Darvish talked Chicago up. Darvish was also in LA, yet he spoke highly of Chicago. He did that a few years back with Suzucki too. Having Suzucki here can also influence Ohtani. And if they get a Japanese pitcher as a FA as well, he has a few Japanese players on the team. That could matter. Bottom line is the Cubs do have a lot going for them. I just matters what Ohtani feels is important, besides just money…..of course.
  17. If Ohtani wants to win he won’t go the San Fran. They are always going to be second best or worse in that division. With the Dodgers there, I don’t see them as a sure playoff team year after year. The Cubs could sell him on being a big market in a division where they “should” dominate because they are the only big market. The youth in the way, the money they have and a commitment by ownership/front office to always be the top of the central. Giants cannot make the same claim and promise. Keep in mind, I am not saying the Cubs will do all they can tell Ohtani they can do. I am just saying they can make that argument. And we all know Ohtani wants to win. The path to winning is clearer in Chicago
  18. Why stop there….. Alonso too.
  19. I am not sure that is what this discussion is about, but I agree 100% with your post. I find myself responding like this often.
  20. Agreed. I do not feel the goal should be to go over the LT this year but then in 25’ lose Soto and Hoskins/Alonso salary to come back under. I understand the idea of going over and then losing the salary of whichever 1st baseman you get in 24. But they don’t have to lose Soto as well. And honestly my idea was either Soto or ohtani(if Soto they extend him) Hoskins/Alonso and then trade for Glasnow. And Glasnow being the guy they don’t sign in 25. If it is possible see if whoever they have a 1st they can resign. I don’t think they could be Alonso and Ohtani in 25. But they probably can if it is Soto. And they probably can if it is Hoskins with either Ohtani or Soto. if both Ohtani and Soto are too cost prohibitory with either of those first baseman that is where Belt comes in. Bottom line is I want either Ohtani or Soto beyond 24,. They can figure out how later.
  21. I like it. But I think they have to add another starting pitcher near the TOR as well. So let’s say lefty Japanese pitcher(don’t know his name), Ohtani, Polanco, Belt and starting pitcher from Morel trade. I like that. In that scenario Belt is fine. As I said, I don’t dislike him, just can’t be the main get. In this scenario he is the 4th or 5th biggest move. That works for me.
  22. But then no Soto or Ohtani? I don’t dislike Belt. I realize he is decent for a lefty bat in a platoon. I just want them to aim higher, I think Hoskins fits better if they do sign either Soto or Otani. And of course, Alonso even better. I am just not sure if the cost in salary and in assets needed to get him.
  23. He will be 36 years old next season. The last season he had 350 AB was 2019 and that year his ops+ was 97. As a platoon, part time guy, he is ok. But, yes, I would like the Cubs to aim higher. I wouldn’t be upset if he was the 3rh most important pick up next year. Just wouldn’t target him.
  24. He will be 36 3 weeks into the season and pretty much been a part time player the last 3 years. I hope they do better than him. Guess if they traded for a solid third baseman or a Morel somehow proves he can play third, they sign Otani or trade for Soto, get 2 starting pitchers via trade or FA and then Belt was added, he would be ok. But not someone I would target as a solid signing.
