  1. It does make sense. Trade Tailon and sign Gallen for 4 years. That eliminates one of the guys whose contract expires after 2026. But if they did this I would still look to add Cabrera too. Maybe still go over the LT, to get Bichette. But by trading Tailon they would only be over by around $10M. And easily under the following year. And have a rotation in 27 of Horton, Wiggins, Steele, Cabrera and Gallen.
  2. Jed is being Jed, but they aren’t worrying about slight differences in arbitration numbers. It is a weird take.
  3. Yep. Jed lets the other teams dictate who his market is. Which is infuriating. Pick a guy and win the bid.
  4. I agree. It is Mo or Cassie. Right now the bench would be Austin, Alcantara and back up catcher. They need a utility guy. Or sign Bichette and make Shaw the utility.
  5. I think it is Mo or Cassie as DH. But I like the idea of Bichette. Shaw and whoever wins the left handed spot (Mo of Cassie)!can also get many AB. I want Bichette too. I just don’t see the Cubs outfield as set and them having to upgrade Shaw any more than they could upgrade Cassie/Mo.
  6. In your mind, what does he have to do to prove you wrong? Is it win a WS or bust with you? They won 92 games after losing their top starting pitcher in April and their best hitter broke his hand in June and wasn’t the same after that. I am not suggesting he is a great POBO, but I also do not agree that he sucks.
  7. If your narrative is Jed is an idiot and everything he does it wrong, then regardless of what Jed does, he messed up. I believe that is thawv’s, and a few other posters here, narrarive. I didn’t agree with the Cubs extending the QO, but I don’t think they just did it hoping he would reject it and they would get a 3rd rd pick.
  8. I agree with everything you just said. Which is why they need to be aggressive with Bichette and get it done. He makes perfect sense. On the flip side, I have very little faith they will do it.
  9. I agree with this. The issue with the 3/$57 was the years. I do think if they could have settled on a similar dollar amount but each year the team has an option, the Cubs would have done that. I also don’t think Jed only gave him the QO because he hoped he would decline and the Cubs would get an extra pick. I think he knew he would either take it or a deal for 2 or 3 years would be worked out before Shota had to reply. I’m not sure I like the decision Jed did make. But I do believe he didn’t just make it hoping Shota would leave.
  10. It is definitely salvageable. The issue is how the FO goes about salvaging it. They really have to stop waiting for the market to drop and taking whoever falls to them. There is a huge difference in the word salvageable between the Cubs signing Bichette to an 8 year deal and completing a trade for Ryan or Canrera as opposed to them signing E. Suarez and Gallen to discount contracts with numerous opt outs.
  11. I agree. Once they offered it, I didn’t think for one minute that he wouldn’t take the one year deal.
  12. That isn’t at all what Jason said. He didn’t say they will sign someone no one talked about. He said if they sign a top guy it will come together all at once. You said they aren’t going to sign any major guys. For the record I agree with you that they will not end up with any if the top guys.
  13. Yes, that would be an awesome way to end the off season. And, I agree it is possible. I just don’t know if Jed has the nerve to stay in on guys and complete the deal. If they can go over then he needs to make it happen. We need to hear more than “Cubs are checking in on someone”. We need to hear “in negotiations with Bichette”.
  14. Matt might be right, and maybe the Cubs can spend more money. But that still doesn’t mean they won’t back out when numbers end up higher than they think they should be. I mean, they didn’t get Imai. So if the plan was getting him, they didn’t. Instead they backed away. I also think the Bregman ship sailed if Boston really offered 5/$160M. They can still salvage the off season. Sit down with Bichette and get the deal done. Then package Cassie with one of Beown, Wicks or Assad and if need be add Long or Triantos and get the best controlled starting pitcher they can get. Or, if money isn’t an issue sign Valdez instead . I have a hard time believing any of that will happen.
  15. I don’t have confidence in that. I think, if they do get a higher end bat it will be because his market cratered. Probably E. Suarez. Then maybe a Cassie for a young pitcher trade. Similar to Rizzo for Cashner long ago.
  16. Thanks for giving me some hope Jason. Been a frustrating off season. At least the Shota write up is positive.
  17. Cubs aren’t getting any of the main guys left unless they drop. They also aren’t going to give up enough to get a proven young controlled starting pitcher. Such a sucky way to run a major market team.
  18. I don’t think the Cubs were shocked Shota took the QO. TBH, I am shocked they offered it to him.
  19. I honestly think E. Suarez is going to be who they get because he drops to them. He ends up with a short opt out deal. He seems most likely to fall through the cracks. And he doesn’t come with a QO issue, so Cubs might be interested.
  20. Right now I am very disappointed in the Cubs FO. I don’t believe they will get anyone of substance.
  21. Oh, I know. And I agree with you. Cubs do have enough to do whatever they want. Both in money and prospect assets. The issue is using it.
  22. My out of the box prediction is the Cubs end up signing E. Suarez to a Bellinger sort of contract late in the off season when he falls to them. Maybe a 3 year deal where he can opt out after each year. He doesn’t cost a draft pick so if he leaves after one year, it isn’t a big deal. I think Jed will whiff on other deals and end up with Suarez.
  23. For me, it isn’t a question of “can Jed still salvage the off season” it is “will he be aggressive enough to do so”? To the first part I say yes it can be salvaged, but the question of will he do it, that answer is no. He still can sign Bjchette and trade for Gore or Ryan. There are probably a few more pitchers he can trade for as well. But he isn’t going to do it. I think, once again, he has failed to realize the market price in terms of real money for free agents and cost in the way of player assets to trade for young pitchers.
  24. I know you are just using Goldschmidt as an example, but I have seen him mentioned before as well. Is he even an option? The last bench spot for the Cubs has to be a utility guy, right? Or if they did sign Bichette or Bregman, Shaw would be utility. I believe they addressed a bench/semi platoon first base, right handed bat with the American guy (Tyler Austin or is it Austin Tyler?) they signed from Japan.
  25. WOW, see my post right after you. Very similar idea. Wish the Cubs agreed.
