The one team that would want to use him now would be the Guardians. They have several young controllable pitchers. If they traded a pitcher for Shaw they would want to know Shaw was healthy. Shaw + for Guardian pitcher +. Fill in the blank on both teams. I also never said it was a deal breaker. But it could be something teams are waiting to see. Like you said, there is no rush to make a deal now anyway. So why not wait until he can prove to be healthy?

Year one it has been bad. I don’t really consider any $7M a year deal a disaster. Not like we expected some great closer and he sucked. We expected a decent 8th inning guy and paid him a lower end salary for that sort of guy. And he didn’t do the job. A wasted $7M contract for a major market team shouldn’t be a disaster. If you want to see a disaster look at Tucker and his $57M a year contract with the Dodgers. Now that is a disaster. And he has options on year 3 and 4.

BN just suggested Shaw will probably hear his name come up in trade talks, but speculated nothing too serious until he gets back in the field or the bench. As I said earlier, in another thread, maybe teams want to make sure he is healthy or maybe the Cubs want to make sure he is healthy so they can trade Pedro if someone wants him.

Maybe. But I think you are way too early with this projection. Anything can happen. If Cabrera comes back healthy and is pitching well he could start any of those games. Especially if it is against a team vulnerable to hard throwing right handed pitching. So suggest the rotation now is just throwing darts IMO.

Meanwhile, is Shota good again? He has been doing well since that terrible stretch he had. And today he is pitching great, even though Kelly is catching. Would be awesome if he is good again.

Which is why it is important for Shaw to get back. Makes it easier to deal him or Ramirez.

You can keep both. That isn’t the problem. But if you want a controlled starting pitcher you may need to deal one.

I don’t agree with this. I would think a team would want to know he was healthy. Or know it isn’t a chronic issue. It is also possible a team like the Guardians might be willing to trade a controlled starting pitcher for someone like Shaw in a package. Shaw is a controlled bat that can help them now, too. They stay in contention and deal from starting pitching strength while adding to the offense. They would absolute want to know he is healthy. Maybe it is totally meaningless and has no bearing on anything, but maybe it could. -

Another thing to consider is perhaps Shaw comes back in the next week. He adds a trade chip for a controlled pitcher. We have no idea what teams are looking for. Maybe a team like the Angels like Shaw. Maybe they need to know he is healthy and then they will talk about Detmer to the Cubs. Same could be said for any other team looking to trade a pitcher. Hopefully Shaw comes back soon. Even if he isn’t traded it does give the Cubs another asset they can offer. -

It didn’t happen yet, however. Maybe wait to criticize him until he actually deserves criticism. I will be there with you if he does nothing. Honestly, this year they have to get a quality starter and at least one high quality pen arm. I don’t care the cost. No excuses. Get it done. If someone is going to do it, it better be them. -

This is exactly the point. Sure Civale might not be anything. But trading for him does not warrant a response like Jed is a bum. If this is all we get, then I will not be happy. But thrbCubs FO is just trying to plug holes now keeping the Cubs in contention until teams decide if they will be dumping or not. It certainly doesn’t help that almost the entire AL has a chance. Hopefully some drop in the next 10-12 days. Cubs could help that along by winning the rest of this homestand. -
If another team values him as much as you do, I would trade him for a controlled pitcher in a minute.

That isn’t my argument. Mine is there does need to be more balanced spending. One team shouldn’t spend $500M and another $50M. How they go about evening it a bit is up to them. But IMO revenue sharing has to be part of it. Not fake sharing. Real sharing but then no advantages to teams who still don’t spend a lot. No more extra picks. No more bigger rewards for losing a FA. No more extra IFA money. Everyone plays with the same rules, period.

We would be having this discussion even if the Blue Jays won the WS. As was mentioned earlier, spending doesn’t mean that team automatically wins the WS. But it does give them a far greater chance. I’m not really for a salary cap, but let’s not act like major spending teams don’t have an advantage every year. It would suck to be in the NL West and know every year you have to compete with a team who will outspend the competition by hundreds of millions of dollars. And let’s not also try to say everyone can spend like the Dodgers. Their revenues give them a huge advantage over most of baseball. I agree teams can and should spend a lot more, but even if they did the Dodgers would just spend more. They have an unfair advantage, but I don’t see a realistic salary cap with a floor and ceiling fixing it. Mainly because I don’t think the owners would really want a realistic floor and ceiling. Complete revenue sharing would never pass the large market teams. Full transparency of finances and revenues wouldn’t pass any teams vote, and a floor of 80% of the ceiling would never pass low revenue teams. Which is why even before players would vote on this, I don’t see owners agreeing to it. This is all a bs issue brought up by the owners. Like what has been said before, if they really wanted to share revenues they could have done it already.

It makes sense because it keeps OD as a special game. It doesn’t make sense in a dome stadiums, as an example. They don’t have to worry about the weather. The day off after OD is not done to rest the players after a game. It is 100% done to make that day special. So having 15 days off all season doesn’t really matter in this situation. If they didn’t take the day off the season would just start one day later. As a general rule, with some exceptions, the day off after OD is done so that it can be a special day for the team and its fans. An actual day of rest for the players isn’t even considered

Guardians do have some controllable pitchers that could be interesting. And Hawkins does know their system and people in that FO. Wouldn’t be upset mid Shaw for one of their young pitchers was something done.
