  1. Time remaining isn’t the issue. There is still a lot of time and good options. The issue is, I believe we all know they won’t do anything significant for a bat. If they wanted to, they absolutely could trade for Cabrera and sign Bichette. They would be under the LT line and have money for any deadline moves. Shaw can be utility and move to second when Nico leaves. But an, I have no faith in them doing that. So that probably means, last arm standing is signed by the Cubs for around $20M a year and then add a bat of little significance.
  2. Cubs need a bat, period. Not sure how you figure they don’t need an outfielder and replacing Shaw is a bigger upgrade. Who are you rating over Shaw, Cassie? Or do you have Seiya in right and Ballesteros as DH? I do see value in Bichette and Bregman because if the Cubs are being very specific on a bat, I would think a right handed bat would be better. But even then that bat wouldn’t replace Shaw, it would just take AB away from Shaw, Cassie and/or Ballesteros.
  3. If only this guide meant anything I would absolutely love Lopez and Buxton for Cassie and Little. But we know that isn’t close regardless of what BTV says. Even an overpay of Cassie, any pitcher listed here and Triantos or Long isn’t getting Lopez and Buxton. If the Cubs could do that and still be about $5M to $7M under the LT, I would love that sort of move. But think the Twins would get better offers if they moved both those guys.
  4. Why not Ranger Suarez, if we are going by projections?
  5. Cassie OR Alcantara plus maybe Brown, Wicks or Assad. Not both.
  6. I ageee. And they should be in that list. But not only if their market craters. They should be on the list to win a bid. Unfortunately the Cubs havent won a bid in the high end market since the Theo was here.
  7. I don’t agree that it is that simple a fact that stars win championships. Not in baseball. Nationals won a WS AFTER their “star” left the team. The Cubs had a star last year in Tucker but lost the division to the Brewers. Who is their star? Sure, the Dodgers have won the last several years but teams have gone far without superstars. Of all the major sports, baseball is the one where you don’t need superstar on the team to win. Or, another way to put it is “a superstar on a team doesn’t mean they will win”. How long was Trout the best player in baseball and not in the playoffs. The only superstars that won last year were house on the Dodgers. There are many superstars that did not win. While you might never have said they don’t want to win, you have repeatedly said they don’t try to win. And I disagree. They do try. I don’t necessarily like the way they go about it anymore than you do. But just because they don’t do it like you think they should doesn’t mean they aren’t trying. Honestly we aren’t that far apart on our views. As a fan I hate the way they go about building a team. I get just as frustrated as you do when they don’t spend to get the big guy. But I stop short of saying they don’t try to win. They do, but in their terms. And I also don’t like their terms.
  8. What you are saying is true. But it really doesn’t matter. The basic point is it has been a long time since the Cubs actually targeted a guy and got him by bidding more than other teams. Whether we use Lester or Heyward or Darvish, it doesn’t matter. It has been in a long while and that is not acceptable for a major market team.
  9. Yes, they are businessmen first. The dollar profit comes first. But I also do believe the FO also believes you sustain winning by value spending. I do think they want to win. If for no other reason, it brings more money.
  10. Someone asked a while back why him leaving after one year is so bad. If what you are suggesting happens and he leaves that would probably mean he had a solid season. Which in itself, is good. As has been said before, there are no bad one year deals. But what makes opting out for Imai, if he did sign with the Cubs, bad is the Cubs have so many guys leaving after this season. They don’t want to add another. And I can’t blame them for that. I know you are going to say cheap Tom Ricketts didn’t want to shell out $31M for Imai because he doesn’t care to win. But in this particular case I believe it was more an issue with him adding to guys leaving after this year. They didn’t want to add another.
  11. I agree Dansby and Darvish are not similar. But the point being made was discussing the last time the Cubs actually won a bidding war on someone. If you want to use Darvish instead of Lester that is fine. Still a long time ago. It is about time the Cubs come on top on an actual bidding war for someone. If they aren’t going to spend on a pitcher!or a big bat (and right now it is seeming the only way they do is if a guy drops to them) they should have won the bidding on Williams. He was said to want to play for the Cubs over the Mets. We have waited all off season seeing small moves so they can save money. All with the belief they will spend it on someone. And maybe they still will. But why does it have to be in who dropped to them. Go win a bidding war on someone. For once I want to hear the Cubs are in on someone and not have the next part of the sentence be “if his market crashes”. I don’t even care who at this point. Ranger Suarez, Bregman, Bichette, Tucker, Bellinger, Valdez, even Gallen, if they really feel one of these guys can help the team, go get him.
  12. You continue with this narrative and you are wrong. It isn’t they don’t try to win. It is their belief that value signings will sustain longer success. Yes, they also put it as a business first. It doesn’t shock me that billionaires but money ahead of everything. But yiu go too far when you suggest they don’t want to win or don’t even try. They sorry, even if it isn’t how we want them to. And TBH, their motive to try is as businessmen if they do win,‘they make more money. I agree with a lot of what you say when it comes to the FO, I just think you go a little too far.
  13. I agree. I don’t have to love the signing. All of us can complain about the years or the dollar amount. But if the Cubs FO wants a guy they should get him. It shouldn’t be they take the last guy standing because he accepted their discount offer.
  14. I tend to agree with you here. Which is why I said “someone”. I would just like them to actually like someone and sign him. PERIOD! To me, that guy might be Bichette. He is 28 and has several years of being good. Target him and don’t take no for an answer. Get it done. They gave Dansby 7, they can do more for Bichette. And if not Bichette, then Tucker. Again, get it done. Don’t be outbid. Flex their financial muscles on someone.
  15. But that’s the problem with the FO. Why does everything have to come down to the Cubs saying no at a certain price? Why can’t they actually just get who they want? Doesn’t have to happen all the time. But just once in a while, if they want a guy and target him they should get him. That is what a major market team is supposed to do. I am not even saying it has to be Bregman. But, damn it, can’t it be someone? Why not Bichette. Why not an 8 year deal at $216M. $27M a year for 8 years. They would still be able to trade for a pitcher and have a good off season. Why not just get that done? If it cost more, than go higher. Pick a damn guy and get him.
  16. I got 2 eye rolls suggesting we can’t KNOW they are going to add. This has to be deserving of way more than 2 eye rolls. . This is a much worse view of the off season. I do THINK they will add at least one significant piece. I just don’t know it as fact. 😬
  17. Look, I hope you are right. And I do believe they will add a pitcher. But I don’t know it for fact. And, frankly, neither do you. And this FO doesn’t deserve the benefit of the doubt on following through with what they say they will do. Until they actually pull the trigger on a higher end staring pitcher, I am not going to claim to know they will do so. I am not down on the Cubs. I know there is still time left. And I do THINK they will add a pitcher of substance. Which is more than some people here think. But as I said, neither I or you KNOWS they will add a solid pitcher. We just know what they said they intend on doing. Kind of like when they said they intend on adding a starting pitcher at the deadline last year so they are keeping money to make that move. How did that work out?
  18. Totally agree. But, again, the list has Heyward on it. If that is not a clear indication it was strictly based on team results once a guy was signed, nothing is. Heyward shouldn’t be anywhere near the top of any list showing best FA signings.
  19. Do we, though? We KNOW they said they are going to do it. But do we know they will? I am not sure if this. I understand your point on Okamoto. I agree I would like to see that. Then it leaves them with just one move the have said they will make. I am just not as positive as you, and probably Jason, about them actually pulling the trigger.
  20. He also listed the Yankees and Dodgers. I don’t like our chances.
  21. I agree Shaw should be a non starter in any talks about a pitcher in a trade. But j do think if rhebCubs end up trading for a guy like Cabrera or Gore it is going to cost more than most people are comfortable with. I also think if they do that sort of trade it also has to come with a big bat signing. Let’s at least spend what we can to improve the team. If they are just going to add a pitcher I would rather they just sign one and keep the prospects for now. For a little out of the box thinking what do you think an Adell and Soriano package would cost the Cubs. Soriano isn’t that established TOR starter, but he is young with many years of control left. If they went this route, instead of spending on FA they can work on extensions. PCA, Horton, Hoerner, Busch, Happ, etc….. Not all, of course. I honestly don’t know much about Soriano, so no idea if he has an upside. I just know briefly there was talk of some interest in Adell and tried pairing him with a controlled starting pitcher.
  22. Then the Cubs need to make that happen. Cassie+ for Cabrera. This is assuming the plus is lower value than Cassie. I agree we should be beyond needing Shaw for Gore or Cabrera. But I am not sure the other teams FO feels the same. Especially with Gore. Last year they wanted Shaw and Horton. Which is outrageous.
  23. Got it. Honestly that surprised me. You don’t do that. But I think we are all just a little frustrated and on edge a little. We all want the Cubs to do something. I agree Shaw for Cabrera is too high an ask. But, sadly, that might be what the Marlins are asking. I am not saying this is where Jed comes out of his confort zone, but I do think the only way the Cubs get better going forward is for Jed to get aggressive and do something that might not fit the FO/ownership model perfectly. Getting tired of saying another team will regret a move they made because they gave up too much, while the Cubs sit idly by.
  24. First of all no need to bring up Addison Russell, let alone his wife as if anything she did would explain Russell assaulting her. Next, I never said Cabrera for Shaw was fair. I have said Cassie + maybe Brown, Wicks or Assad was fair. When the poster who originally put out his proposal he had Alcantara and Shaw for Cabrera and Sanoja. While I agree that isn’t fair for the Cubs, I did say perhaps the poster realized Alcantara for Cabrera was too one sided the Cubs way and added the other 2 players. If the original offer would be Alcantara for Cabrera and another piece was added each way, the Cubs piece would have to be stronger. Shaw and Sanoja does go too strong the other way. I will also add getting a young controlled pitcher is going to hurt. Probably more than what people expect or want to give up here. Cubs fans (all fans, really) always overvalue the their prospects and/or players and undervalue who they get. While I agree Shaw for Cabrera is too much, the Marlins might not think so. Same with Gore or Ryan. As a Cubs fan I would do everything I could not to use Shaw as the centerpiece for a controllable pitcher of only 2 or 3 years. They will need him for second or third base for 2027.
  25. Maybe I am wrong. He might be at all but not do Q&A panels because he has gotten booed previously. Either way, the point is, he did get booed previously.
