If it got the Cubs Imai and Okamoto that would be awesome. But like you said, just a conspiracy theory. But I like it.

There are probably more people lining up to bitch about whatever the Cubs end up doing than there are Cub apologists.

The thing with me is more about why they took Gallen over Imai, if that happens. If both sign a similar AAV deal, maybe Imai for 5 years an Gallen for 3 or 4, I wouldn’t be on the ledge. To me that says the Cubs think they can work with whatever issues Gallen had and actually like him more than Imai. However, if Imai does get a 7/$170 and then the Cubs sign Gallen I would be a little concerned that the Cubs got out of Imai strictly due to his contract demands and settled in Gallen. That is not something they should have to do, ALL THE TIME.

Here is where I am on this. If Imai ends up getting 7/$175, and then the Cubs sign Gallen for something like 4/$88, I can’t help but think they did so because Gallen was cheaper. And that bugs me. As a major market team the Cubs should get who they want every once in a while, even if it take them out of their comfort zone. However, if Imai signs a 5 year contract, with an AAV of $22M and the Cubs, instead sign Gallen for 4/$88M I would think they must really like Gallen better, and trust the FO. Personally, based on comments from Jason and a few others, I would rather have Imai. But we really have no idea exactly how the Cubs view the remaining FA pitchers.

They won a WS with Zobrist. What did they win with Dawson. And I am over 40. I get it, Dawson was a great signing. But Zobrist was more impactful. If I was going to have an issue with the list put out it would be with Heyward. Not Zobrist.

But, again, if the Cubs sign Gallen to roughly the same deal they could have had Imai for, doesn’t that mean in their mind Gallen is the better pitcher? Sorry thawv, but I trust the Cubs FO evaluation much more than yours. Keep in mind, if Imai doesn’t up going to something like 7/$175 and then the Cubs sign Gallen instead, they do not deserve the benefit of the doubt as to why they went Gallen. That would be an example of them not signing the best FA, just the one who was willing to accept what they decided to spend.

I agree, but that’s another discussion. For 2026 it makes more sense for the Cubs to carry one of Cassie or Mo, and then Alcantara as a a 4th outfielder. Once 2027 comes around maybe Cassie does take one of the outfield spots and they sign or trade for another outfielder.

It isn’t so much they have to trade guys to get a starting pitcher. It is using the system to acquire major league talent. All teams trade prospects.

Not sure how Imai can be an needle mover in your mind and not Gallen. And besides your mind, if the Cubs don’t sign Imai and he goes for something like 5/$105 and then they do sign Gallen for 4/$84 that tells me, in the Cubs mind Gallen is a better pitcher. I am not suggesting this happens. I am just saying that if this scenario plays out I trust the Cubs FO decision. If they don’t get Imai and that is the contract, that tells me they don’t value him as highly as we all think they do. That is a contract I could see the Cubs being fine with IF they like Imai.

So none of the pitchers are needle moving? I agree that I don’t see it in the line up. But, including Imai there are still several pitchers via FA or a trade.

I do believe they will end up with a solid pitcher this off season. And, yes, I am including Gallen as a solid pitcher. I am not saying it will be him, but if it is, I would still consider that strengthening the team. What I am not certain about is adding a bat if any significance. They may be done there. Maybe they add a utility guy. I don’t see Bregman, as an example. I thought the highest they would reach is Okamoto, but that appears to not be happening. While that wouldn’t be exactly what I had hoped for the off season, I do think stretching the pen and the rotation is needle moving.

I would be fine with Mo or Cassie traded for Cabrera. Add one of Wicks, Brown or Assad.

I agree. And I think Alcantara fills their biggest need. Someone who can play all spots in the outfield.

I don’t know for certain, but I would bet just about anything Jed isn’t thinking for even one minute about trading Happ or Suzuki in July. I would think the further thing from his mind is ”how do I dump at the TDL”?

Well maybe tonight or some time tomorrow. Not sure the hold up, but these two are definitely using all their time.

I do think Mo can hit. But the Cubs could make a solid argument that keeping him in Iowa to work on strictly catching makes a lot of sense. If Mo makes the major league roster and stays up, IMO, that means they do not really believe he can catch. There is also a possibility one of him or Cassie is traded. I don’t see them both being on the team short of an injury replacement, or as Bertz said, Seiya is considered the back up centerfielder. Which is not an idea I like.

I don’t think we will see both Mo and. Cassie on the team so I doubt both will play and Suzuki sits. If healthy Seiya will play 150+ games. If Mo beats out Cassie Seiya will play right. If Cassie beats out Mo, Mo will catch at AAA, and Cassie will start in right over Seiya, who will DH. Bench of Austin, back up catcher, maybe Alcantara and a utility infielder. Maybe Kingery. This is, of course, if they don’t add a bat.

I would agree. Except Suzuki is definitely in the line up. It is Cassie/Ballesteros for the last spot.

I understand this and to further the statement, if he signed a 3 to 5 year deal for an AAV beteeen $16M and $22M and it isn’t the Cubs, I wouldn’t say the Cubs missed out on him. I wouldn’t view this as the Xubs didn’t want him more than they were not willing to pay that sort of money for a pitcher. Because money and years is right where Jed is comfortable. Doesn’t mean they are wrong not to want him. Just means they aren’t seeing him as good as maybe Gallen.

I think Mo will outhit Cassie as well. But he is very young and the Cubs might really want him to catch. That’s the only reason I put Cassie over him. They may want Ami to get a year in at catching in Iowa. I do like his bat, however.

Oops, my bad. Looking over his stats from Japan I do see he was not exclusively a 3rd baseman. That said, I can still see a fit for him. Cubs don’t have to have Cassie as a DH. Maybe Okamoto takes that spot. They can use another right handed bat in the everyday line up anyway. And as you said, even with Cassie he adds versatility and a guy who can replace Happ next year. If he can hit they would find a space for him.

My first thought was actually tomorrow. Okamoto is said to be visiting teams. How many? How does he do that all in one day? I am going on a 10 mile hike today (11AM mountain time) with no ability to check in, so maybe it will happen today🤷 It would be great to get to the car and see the Cubs actually did something.!

If the Cubs don’t over that sort of deal it is because they don’t think he is that good, period. I am sure, if they really like him they would do that. Money and years wouldn’t be the issue in this instance. It would be uncertainty about his projections. So if they didn’t do it I would not assume that means they won’t be in the other pitchers in that range and even a little above. Probably Gallen.
