  1. That’s valid. Not going to get into the Morel debate again I totally understand your position on this. Guess we will wait until we see what the team looks like. Maybe instead of Chapman it ends up Polanco. Less years committed. That is ok too. Maybe a bigger deal and it is Lowe. Again, less years committed. I just don’t want them picking Chapman over Haskins/Naylor strictly because they don’t have other options for 3rd base. BTW, very similar doubts were here last year when the Cubs talked about working Madrigal at 3rd. Defensively that worked out pretty well.
  2. They can do both. Maybe they are waiting on reports of Morel at 3rd. Or still deciding on him there. If is can handle it Hoskins and Naylor can co-exist.
  3. I problem. I only noticed because I have run very similar scenarios to what you did and I neve had Madrigal In the line up. I think we all pretty much agree they need 2 bats and 1 needs to hit from the left side. At least one starting pitcher(preferably 2) and at least one pen arm. Bats are among guys like Naylor, Polanco, Bellinger, Lowe, Chapman, Hoskins, Belt, Alonso, Torres, JD Martinez to name a few. Pitcher via trade is most likely Bieber. But Cease would be nice. And then there are several young arms as well. Via FA I would hope they are looking more towards Imanaga, Montgomery and Snell. I realize some of these guys aren’t even abailable. Just doing best guess as to who could be had. There is also Bichette, Tucker, Vlad, Bergman crazy talk too.
  4. I think you mean Hoerner, not Madrigal. And that same scenerio could work with Hoskins instead of Chapman, if the Cubs think Morel can handle 3rd. Instead of Chapman at 3rd and Morel at DH, Morel can play 3rd and Hoskins primarily DH. I believe Morel is playing 3rd most days now. Maybe that could be his home.
  5. I am fine with the Cubs not getting Bellinger. But is they don’t they have to make a trade for a solid left handed bat. There are none in free agency. Basically they would need to make a trade for Naylor. And then they would need another bat. So either Hoskins or Chapman as a free agent or trade for Alonso. If the Cubs feel Morel can handle third base Hoskins would be my choice. If not, sign Chapman and let Morel DH, or make, yet, another trade for someone like Torres, Lowe or Polanco and let them play 3rd and Morel DH. If they were able to get Naylor and Bieber without using PCA, which they should be able to do, at least they would have a decent line up. Add another staring pitcher via free agency and a pen arm and you have a solid high 80’s to low 90’s win team. They have enough in the system to make any of those deals. And they would still have a decent system. Guys like Bieber, Alonso, Polanco, and even Torres shouldnt be too expensive because this is the last year of their contracts. If they don’t want to block prospects and Morel can’t handle third, maybe a trade is bettter than Chapman.
  6. I know everyone is upset and pissed about what has been happening. But if they do as 1908 suggested and get Bieber in a trade, sign a solid starting pitcher as well as a pen arm and Hoskins and Bellinger they actually will have a good team who would most likely be the favorite in the central with a expected win total of 87-90 wins. It is a far cry from what I wanted them to do, but they will be good. I guess Bellinger would play all outfield positions and first base. If Morel can actually handle 3rd and PCA is at least not terrible with the bat they have a chance to be better than a 90 win team.
  7. Sadly this is probably right. The only reason I would think they might stay in on Imanaga is because the others you mentioned come with the QO penalty. They might want to aboud that. If not Imanaga, sadly Wacha might be their target. No QO.
  8. Not someone the Cubs should be interested in anyway.
  9. What is the rotation. Switch Hader for Imanaga or Montgomery or Clase for Bibee or Allen and at least you added a starting pitcher. If Morel can handle 3rd that might be enough, tbh. DH rotates between Bellinger, Happ, Suzuki and Naylor. PCA stays in center. Bellinger plays all outfield positions as well as some first base.
  10. Dave Smith came over in 91, so after Dawson signed. And he was at the end of his career. Was not a big FA signing.
  11. Jacque Jones? Not sure there was a Jacque Vaughn. Also, no idea who this guy from Houston was before Dawson. It was not Mike Scott.
  12. Way more detailed and thought out response than me. But the result is the same. YUCK!!!! Hope it is bs.
  13. I feel if they sign Bellinger they need to trade PCA. Bellinger has to be the centerfielder. Even with some regression he is a solid bat and good glove. But he has to be in center, not first base. Plus, if they do sign him they also get something else filled on the team by a PCA trade. Either a young controlled starting pitcher or a spot in the line up filled. Maybe both. I see both sides of the Bellinger debate. What I don’t understand is those who say they want him but only for 6 years or a particular dollar amount. Or those who want to move him to first. To me, if he is someone you want it has to be for center. If you believe enough in him for 6 years and an average salary around $25M, is it really that big a deal to do 7 and a $27M salary? I don’t think you hedge with PCA. I think you trade him. If they don’t want Bellinger at 1st there is no reason for PCA on the team. Might as well fill another position if need by trading him. Based on the above, as long as they also dealt PCA I would want to sign Bellinger. However if they are not going to trade PCA they might as well pass on Cody and try doing something else to help the team. I don’t want him at 1st. Not while paying him to play center.
  14. Yep, I read it as if it is not a definite and they have other talks as serious with other clubs. The line that said “could A Deal come together soon” sounded like it wasn’t necessarily the deal with the Sosgers. I feel that had it meant with the Dodgers it should have read “could THE deal come together soon. Just a small glimmer of hope, I guess.
  15. I read it in mlb trade rumors a few minutes ago. Not sure if the exact source. I added (Cubs)
  16. I think there is enough blame to go around for all. I think Jed is doing exactly what he and Tom want.
  17. There are now reports that they may have jumped the gun on the Glasnow to the Dodgers report. It is now being reported that there may be similar talks that are as serious with other teams (Cubs?)
  18. To be clear, I am not accepting it either. That was meant for sarcasm. But it appears that’s the way this FO/Ownerhip chooses to act. I have been a fan for almost 60 years. I am still going to be a fan. So I can either bitch and moan and come up with ideas of what they should do but never will do. Or figure out what could make them win that is what they realistically can do based on what their way of operating the team. I DON’t LIKE IT AT ALL.
  19. If the Cubs are serious about building with trades and less via free agency they still can have a nice off season, Jed style. Signing would be Bellinger and Imanaga. Trades would be something like PCA for Naylor and either Allen or Bibee of the Guardians. Add whoever else is needed either way. Then trade for either Lowe of the Rays or Polanco. You add 3 lefties to the line up. Morel or Polanco/Lowe play 3rd. The other is the DH. Add a pen arm or two and you probably spend $60M-$70M. They would have a solid everyday line up, solid pitching and good defense. It isn’t what we want. But it seems the Cubs are just not a large market. We have to accept it.
  20. Not so much me giving up on Mervis. Honestly other than Stratos, I have been in the Mervis camp as long as anyone else. But I think the Cubs have moved on from him. But if not, and all best scenarios occurred, there would still be room for Hoskins. Him and Mervis share 1B and DH and Morel plays third. morel being able to handle 3rd and Mervis being a solid offensive player is really a best case scenario situation.
  21. Need to get Bregman without losing Morel. We need Morel’s bat.
  22. I would rather sign Hoskins than trade a prospect for Alonso. Now, if you can get Alonso cheap, that is a different story. Trade PCA for a left handed bat and a young controlled starting pitcher. That bat can either play 3rd or DH and let Morel play 3rd.
  23. Makes sense if they have to stop at $70M. But why do they have to stop at that number? Why do they have to be under the LT?
  24. Going Bieber over Glasnow could also hint to them going after Chapman. What better for ground ball pitchers than 3 gold glove winners in the infield. And I don’t really like this scenario, but it is possible. Maybe instead of leaving spots open for the young talent, they will the spots with major league talent via trades of the assets. Maybe sign Chapman and trade for Bieber and Naylor. Fills SP, 1st and 3rd. Still need another pitcher, IMO,(Imanaga or Montgomery) and a pen arm. Could also use another bat unless they are happy with defense first in center.
