  1. I’m not worried about the overpay aspect of people’s arguments. For me, if you can get him for that 7/$181 you do so and play him in center. Cubs need offense. Specifically some left handed power. If they believe in his bat, why can’t he stay in center for at least 5 or more of those years and still play a good centerfield? Figure out what to do with PCA. I would be fine trading him if he filled another problem with who we got back. Seems people complain about the Cubs not signing free agents but then everyone we do discuss signing a guy it comes back to “he will be overpaid and it is not worth it”. Simple fact is most signings are an overpay. Cubs should be right there with any other team bidding on him and project him as their centerfielder.
  2. I would take him at that contract. I am not sure why people think he can’t play the outfield at 33-35. He should be fine. And I am not as worried about his EV and hard hit rate S some. I think a lot of it has to do with his 2 strike approach. Nimmo signed an 8 year deal last year when he played the entire year at 30. So he is signed until 38. And he is only a centerfielder. So, again, why not Bellinger until he is 36?
  3. If they did sign Bellinger he would have to play the outfield. I don’t feel PCA should stop something like that from happening. First, they can leave him down another year. Second, if Morel can play 3rd, PCA and Bellinger can co-exist. One of the outfielders can rotate in at DH. Finally, they can also trade PCA to fill other holes. Rather than signing Hoskins, I would hope they could trade for Naylor. Gives them a few years at 1st. I really think the Cubs FO has given up on Mervis. All of the above said, if you want to say your have concerns about Bellinger having a repeat performance of last year or worry about his EV, hard hit rate, etc…. I get that. Or if you think he won’t be worth the money they have to pay him for a long term investment, I get that too. I just don’t agree with them not getting him because he doesn’t fit. If they believe in him and they are ok with his price, he fits fine.
  4. Cubs need a left handed hitter with some power. How is the fit not great? I mean he might not be worth the contract he will get, but his ability does fit the Cubs need.
  5. I believe he will make several moves and this team will go into 2024 as the favorite in the division. I just irrationally want things to happen now.
  6. If this is true, I agree. No reason the Cubs shouldn’t have done this if it truly was available to them. Hell, could have done even more. But I still think this steep a deferral wouldn’t have been taken by him from another team.
  7. I am sure we would love it if it was us. And I hope next year this is something they look into with Soto. Doesn’t have to be as crazy. Maybe he makes $12M a year (spending money) for 13 years and then get $350M deferred. That gets him a $500M contract. But maybe only shows as $28m to $30m a year for team payroll purposes. Not as much a savings, but still good. Honestly this could change the way teams now make offers. But as 1908 said, puts pressure on the player to accept it. It does suck, but if this is the rule a high revenue team isn’t doing their job if they don’t at least try doing this.
  8. What does this mean? Dodgers team payroll only shows $28M for him next year? Or will it be $46M?
  9. What this tells me is it was the Dodgers all the way. He would not have done this for another team. Kind of sucks, but this is what it is. Cubs couldn’t do a damn thing about it. No way he does this for them.
  10. Yes for me. I am sure you too. But I get your point. As I said, just like them to make some sort of substantial move so we have something to discuss(argue about).
  11. We are too early for panic. I just like to see some real action. I do think they will be active this off season. It would be nice to have something real to talk about.
  12. Cubs have a good defensive centerfielder who hasn’t proved he can hit. And he could bring a lot back in a trade. Not saying they should go the route of signing Bellinger, but if they do he has to play center and his price has to come down some. If they signed Bellinger and then traded PCA you can probably get something starting with Naylor and Bieber from the Guardians, Glasnow and Lowe from the Rays, Cease+ from the Sox or a Marlin pitcher + from the marlins. Trades may include additional players. Just suggesting what PCA is worth having a conversation about.
  13. I don’t like the idea of Happ at 1st. But if the Cubs got a big bat that played the corner outfield and needed him to move to 1st, he is moving to first, ego and all.
  14. I don’t agree with this. If Happ were asked to move over to 1st base he would move over. I would imagine it would be easier for him to pick up than it was Harper. And Harper did fine. So why wouldn’t Happ? At least he did play the infield. But unless they signed a big bat for the outfield or traded for one, I don’t see the purpose.
  15. And we really don’t know what other teams like or want. Maybe Mervis goes back to them if they think he can play. I know Polanco is also an option. Again, just kind of guessing since Jed said they weee focusing on left handed bats during the winter meetings.
  16. If they are talking with the Twins does Kirilloff make sense? Left bat who can play 1st. Not sure his cost. He has a few more years of team control.
  17. A lot of possibilities with Twins, Guardians and Mariners. But he needs to get going. Don’t want to be left behind when the smoke clears.
  18. Yes. If they are paying him and bidding against other teams for his services in centerfield he needs to be in centerfield. That is too much money for 1st base.
  19. First, Bellinger needs to come down some on what Boros is suggesting. I don’t want him at $200M either. But for a Swanson deal, he would be fine. And, he has to play centerfield. Counting on rookies to fill these spots and penciling them in as if it is a given they will be stars is a recipe to be a bad team a long time. I do also like Hoskins and/or Naylor. There is room for all of those guys. Doing this, even having all 3 doesn’t mean they have to trade PCA. They can give him the year at AAA. In 25’ they can figure out what to do. If they have Naylor and PCA is proving he needs to be in the majors and playing everyday. They can rotate outfielders as DH. Or they can trade a corner outfielder and move Bellinger to the corner. A lot can happen in a year. I feel there is something about Mervis the Cubs don’t like. I don’t see him as an option. I wish he was, but I don’t think he will be.
  20. You would be wrong. Just can’t type and mess up names. And I have since corrected Wesneski since you mentioned it.
  21. I agree, Belliger has to start in center. But I’m not sure you have to trade PCA. He can get another year at AAA. Decide before the 25’ season what to do. That said, if PCA gets you a young controlled starting pitcher or is used for a bigger deal for a pitcher and another bat, that works too.
  22. No, Belliger should only be signed for center. Either trade for Naydor or sign Hoskins too. Or both. One can DH.
  23. They have enough minor league talent to trade for some major league additions. They don’t need to trade young major league talent.
  24. I think he has been written off way more by people here than the FO. I think, at the very least, they will try using him there this spring.
  25. Me too. Especially Morel. I think they need his power bat, even if just as DH.
