I feel if they sign Bellinger they need to trade PCA. Bellinger has to be the centerfielder. Even with some regression he is a solid bat and good glove. But he has to be in center, not first base. Plus, if they do sign him they also get something else filled on the team by a PCA trade. Either a young controlled starting pitcher or a spot in the line up filled. Maybe both. I see both sides of the Bellinger debate. What I don’t understand is those who say they want him but only for 6 years or a particular dollar amount. Or those who want to move him to first. To me, if he is someone you want it has to be for center. If you believe enough in him for 6 years and an average salary around $25M, is it really that big a deal to do 7 and a $27M salary? I don’t think you hedge with PCA. I think you trade him. If they don’t want Bellinger at 1st there is no reason for PCA on the team. Might as well fill another position if need by trading him. Based on the above, as long as they also dealt PCA I would want to sign Bellinger. However if they are not going to trade PCA they might as well pass on Cody and try doing something else to help the team. I don’t want him at 1st. Not while paying him to play center.

Yep, I read it as if it is not a definite and they have other talks as serious with other clubs. The line that said “could A Deal come together soon” sounded like it wasn’t necessarily the deal with the Sosgers. I feel that had it meant with the Dodgers it should have read “could THE deal come together soon. Just a small glimmer of hope, I guess.

There are now reports that they may have jumped the gun on the Glasnow to the Dodgers report. It is now being reported that there may be similar talks that are as serious with other teams (Cubs?)

To be clear, I am not accepting it either. That was meant for sarcasm. But it appears that’s the way this FO/Ownerhip chooses to act. I have been a fan for almost 60 years. I am still going to be a fan. So I can either bitch and moan and come up with ideas of what they should do but never will do. Or figure out what could make them win that is what they realistically can do based on what their way of operating the team. I DON’t LIKE IT AT ALL.

If the Cubs are serious about building with trades and less via free agency they still can have a nice off season, Jed style. Signing would be Bellinger and Imanaga. Trades would be something like PCA for Naylor and either Allen or Bibee of the Guardians. Add whoever else is needed either way. Then trade for either Lowe of the Rays or Polanco. You add 3 lefties to the line up. Morel or Polanco/Lowe play 3rd. The other is the DH. Add a pen arm or two and you probably spend $60M-$70M. They would have a solid everyday line up, solid pitching and good defense. It isn’t what we want. But it seems the Cubs are just not a large market. We have to accept it.

Not so much me giving up on Mervis. Honestly other than Stratos, I have been in the Mervis camp as long as anyone else. But I think the Cubs have moved on from him. But if not, and all best scenarios occurred, there would still be room for Hoskins. Him and Mervis share 1B and DH and Morel plays third. morel being able to handle 3rd and Mervis being a solid offensive player is really a best case scenario situation.

Need to get Bregman without losing Morel. We need Morel’s bat.

I would rather sign Hoskins than trade a prospect for Alonso. Now, if you can get Alonso cheap, that is a different story. Trade PCA for a left handed bat and a young controlled starting pitcher. That bat can either play 3rd or DH and let Morel play 3rd.

Makes sense if they have to stop at $70M. But why do they have to stop at that number? Why do they have to be under the LT?

Going Bieber over Glasnow could also hint to them going after Chapman. What better for ground ball pitchers than 3 gold glove winners in the infield. And I don’t really like this scenario, but it is possible. Maybe instead of leaving spots open for the young talent, they will the spots with major league talent via trades of the assets. Maybe sign Chapman and trade for Bieber and Naylor. Fills SP, 1st and 3rd. Still need another pitcher, IMO,(Imanaga or Montgomery) and a pen arm. Could also use another bat unless they are happy with defense first in center.

I agree on Glasnow making a lot of sense. There is no bad one year deal. Didn’t out FO say that at one time. Glasnow was the perfect guy to add with another pitcher. As far as I am concerned his contract shouldn’t even be an issue in this years team. Go over the LT his entire contract. It comes off next year. I hate that this team worries so much about that tax line. Be a big market, damn it.

Then there better be trades. Time to use some of those minor league assets for proven major league talent.

Yes, they need to sign a starting pitcher. And he needs to be a good one, not some #4 starter. But they also should trade for Glasnow for this year. This idea of having to stay just under the LT should not be accepted this year. Especially if they go over with 2 guys that will also become free agents next year. Glasnow would have been a great fit for this team.

I think more than anything it is people not trusting ownership and the FO. Whatever they end up doing, IMO, most will suggest it is wrong.

This is what I don’t understand. And I am not just meaning you. So many fans talk about the Cubs need to make moves and need to be aggressive. But then we discuss a player and hear how many are afraid of an overpay. Afraid of the years. Afraid of his production. I feel there is nothing the Cubs will do this off season that the majority will be happy with. Any FA they sign will be an overpay. And guy they trade for will have something that worries people. But if they don’t do enough in free agency or the trade market they will get criticized. I guess this FO doesn’t deserve the benefit of the doubt so that is how it will be.

Why not add guys like Glasnow and Hoskins and go over the LT. Then the following year Horton takes a spot. They are losing $50M next year. So they can go over.

If Jed stops short of the LT line he and the entire organization and ownership suck. There is absolutely no reason to not go over it this year, especially if they do so with a few one year deals. The fan base shouldn’t be happy with this idea, at all.

I get what you are saying. But there really isn’t a good argument for a non closer pen arm to earn $15M. And if he did, I doubt it would make sense to be on the Royals, when you consider how low their team payroll will be.

At $15M annual he has to be a starter. That is a lot for a pen arm.
