  1. As a major market team they don’t always have to bow out of contracts when they feel the overall cost is greater than the overall value. Sometimes major market teams have to spend to get a star they know at the end of the contract might not look great. Harper is a perfect example. He was been awesome as a Phillie. And they have had 2 very fun years. Eventually he won’t be worth his money. But right now he makes them very good. Actually Lester is also an example of this. The last few years of his contract he was t worth the money. But they won a damn WS with him so who cares?
  2. I am definitely more in the camp that the issue is more Ricketts than Hoyer. I think if it was Hoyer and Ricketts wanted him to spend whatever is necessary, and he didn’t, he would be fired. It is still early and maybe they do end up putting a 90+ win team in the field this year. Doesn’t have to be Ohtani or Soto. But if they do not and constantly lose out on guys to lesser teams the FO/ownership has to be held accountable. No excuse not to be good in 24’, PERIOD!
  3. Exactly! That is my point.
  4. This argument gets old. The Cubs are a major market. They have money to spend. In fact the only advantage they have over the lower market teams is their ability to spend. If/when they choose to not do it they are deciding to not take advantage of the knee advantage they have. I am not suggesting they need to throw money around foolishly. But they can decide they want a guy and get him NO MATTER THE COST! They can be aggressive and get the best players every so often instead of saddling for who will take their deals. Sure teams spend and then don’t win. So what. If you are a top revenue team that shouldn’t stop you from spending. Teams like the Padres do have to pull back, because they aren’t major market. But the Cubs shouldn’t have to. Now, that doesn’t mean I blame him for not getting Ohtani or Soto. If he gave a competitive offer and Ohtani just didn’t want to play here, I guess there is nothing he could do about it. And, IMO, the Yankees overpaid for Soto. So I am okay with that. But they should still spend. They should be over the LT this year by either signing a few other guys and my trading for guys who might come with some salary. And I just don’t think they will based on Jed already basically conceding the off season.
  5. Right now I would be happy if the Cubs qualified for a participation trophy for the off season.
  6. I wouldn’t hate Naydor and Bieber for the right price. I think Clase would cost too many assets. And I wouldn’t want Bieber and Naydor to be the off season. They would need more. Glasnow and Hoskins maybe. Then Morel does play 3rd? Not super exciting.
  7. So until Boras actually does extend someone on his last year (Harper would qualify here) I am sticking with the thought Soto will be available next season. Not that it matters. He will want and get more than the Cubs will give.
  8. What extension did Alonso and Harper get?
  9. The path to proving a good team in 24 is narrowing IMO. I mean they can do it, but I am less enthusiastic about them really doing it when you hear them talk about the kids being close and not wanting to block them. I mean I can see the Glasnow trade and signing Hoskins. Which is ok. But then what? Even if they added Lowe to the TB trade that would be at the expense of Morel(I would think). So basically Hoskins and Lowe will have replaced Bellinger and Morel and Glasnow replaced Stroman. That is not enough. Unless they really can get Bichette/Bregman and maybe a young controlled pitcher I just don’t see this team any better than last year. And I don’t even see how they can get there. I honestly have no idea why Bichette or Bregman would be available too. I guess there can be something out of the blue. But I am not encouraged right now.
  10. I think if Ohtani was still an option the Cubs might be willing to make rhe deal with TB a little bigger and add Morel. Maybe without Ohtani it is just Glasnow but Morel not in the deal because he will DH Maybe with Ohtani Morel can be added and maybe the Cubs get Lowe back. One can hope, right???
  11. Ok, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t go 10 years. I would think every Ohtani offer from all teams has opt outs. So not sure why the Cubs offering opt outs is relevant to any discussion on their offer. I would think that was assumed.
  12. So? What does that mean. I bet every offer he is getting has opt outs for him after 3 or 4 years. That doesn’t mean they didn’t offer 10. People are speculating just to bitch about something. And, the truth is if they don’t get him but it comes out they did offer 10+ years everyone who bitched will never come back in and say they were wrong. Maybe he just doesn’t want to play in Chicago? Doesn’t mean the GO didn’t make a serious attempt at him.
  13. I’m actually ok with Hoskins being the biggest FA signing IF they also make some trades. If they get Glasnow too and maybe with him they get Lowe. Or maybe if the Jays get Ohtani they do trade Bichette. Or the Astros trade Bregman. I agree that Hoskins can’t be the only add iffensjvely, but they can add via trade. Maybe they also deal for a young controlled pitcher. Maybe trade for another bat. Polanco? They can still have a solid off season with Hoskins being the big FA signing. But they have to then make deals to add.
  14. I think it would be more like Horton than Brown. And I am fine with the Cubs not doing that.
  15. I’d they didn’t there will be plenty of time to criticize them. And I will be doing so as well. But right now people are criticizing them as if they know they didn’t go all in. And that is just not been proven yet.
  16. The example I used was Diaz. Lowe and Glasnow for PCA, Morel and Wesneski. Both Lowe and Diaz have 3 years left.
  17. Where does Ohtani live when he is in the US? Is it LA? I would guess it would be very easy for him to get a stadium tour there the day before he met all the teams. And we don’t know if he was in Wrigley, tbf. I mean, Cubs aren’t going to get him, but this criticism of them not putting an honest effort in is uncalled for. It was always a long shot, but IMO they went all in on their effort.
  18. I think the only way they consider Bellinger is if they keep him in center and trade PCA. They can probably fill 2 other positions by trading PCA.
  19. He can ask what he wants. But when we get to reality I think it will be something closer to 7/$182. And that is high.
  20. At that level I would be out too.
  21. Does he make sense for the Cubs? No real talk about him with anyone.
  22. How about a lot bigger? PCA, Morel and Wesneski for Lowe, Diaz and Glasnow. Sign Bellinger and Imanaga and a pen arm. Maybe trade for Polanco. Between Lowe, Polanco and Diaz you cover 1st, 3rd and DH. You gain 3 lefty bats. Bellinger stays in center.
  23. Lowe has 2 team options after this year too. So he wouldn’t be bad. Maybe a pen arm too? I don’t Diaz or Parades is added unless the Cubs are moving PCA.
  24. As long as Ricketts owns the team it’s going to be difficult for the Cubs to get star players. Hoyer is just following Ricketts lead. He may think like him too. But if he didn’t he wouldn’t be the president of baseball operations.
  25. Chicago named ‘Best Big City in the US' by Condé Nast Traveler for 7th consecutive year Well maybe I am biased, but 7 years in a row being named best big city in the US is pretty impressive.
