Yes, but it would be trading assets on someone you have beyond this year. They have him 2 years after this. Look at it this way, would he be more expensive then getting Peralta this year, then another top pitcher next year and then again the year after that? I don’t think he would be. Getting him now eliminates having to do this every year.

Miller. But because he has 3 years after this one. If those were my options I would take Miller over Skubal, who is strictly a rental, and Ryan, who only has one year after this one.

IMO it would be incredibly stupid for the Padres to lessen their prospect haul by making someone take Bogaerts too. Get the best prospects you can get.

Like I said, I don’t doubt you wanted Cease instead of Bregman. A lot of people did. And right now it is easy to say you were right. I just don’t like spending that kind of money and years on a 30 year old pitcher with a lot of innings under his belt let. Sure, looks like a great move now, but this is year 1 of 7. He will be well into his later 30’s by the time the contract is up. And more often than now spending on those arms doesn’t work well. As I said, to me if they signed Bregman, Shaw and/or Alcantara should have been traded for a young controlled solid arm. That is the bigger mistake to me.

I understand what you are saying. But that could have just as easily been an easy double play ground ball to the second baseman. He got it through so now it looks like a great AB.

I am in total agreement with this. Even if you look at the prospects we have. How different are they then last year. Cubs added a lot of higher end prospects by guys having good years. And a lot of overlap. Buy big now. There will be a new group of prospect again next year.

This is easy to say now because of how well Cease is doing and how poorly Bregman is doing. And you may have said it then, too. I am not saying you didn’t. So now you look like you were right. But I would bet in last few years people also wanted Corbin Burnes, Snell, Fried, Valdez, Rodon, etc… And I will also say during Cease contract years there will be a time we will be happy we didn’t have him. I was fine with Bregman before and still am. He just isn’t playing well. I am not a fan of giving a 30 year old pitcher with a lot of innings on his arm a 7 year deal. Right now, yes, looks like a good deal so people can sit back with “I told you so”. And DID TELL US. Let’s see how it all plays out. To me the mistake was not trading Shaw+ for a young pitcher. I think something like Bregman and Soriano(as an example) would be just about as good as Cease and Shaw. And it would come with less risk of injury to the high priced guy.

I thought I saw the Mets were talking with him to extend him. I don’t think the Cubs will get a rental even as good as him, tbh. If they get a good pitcher, IMO, he will have a few years of control after this one. If they get a rental it will be one of those tbh king outside the box sort of guys. No one even as good as Holmes.

Wanted to address this separately. I completely agree with this. A young starting pitcher with several years of control should already be on this team. Shaw and/or Alcantara should have been in a package for a good young pitcher. To me, that should have been the obvious move once they signed Bregman. The off season was not perfect. No one has a perfect off season. And Jed definitely makes his share of mistakes. But even with mistakes a relatively healthy year would have brought a mid 90’s win team to Chicago.

Again, to be fair to the Cubs FO, their staff typically exceeds the FG projections, because if the great defense the team plays. If that entire rotation stayed relatively healthy it would have been top 10-13 in the league. We all felt Horton was undervalued, for one. Cabrera was also someone most were very excited about. Brown turning into a stud only make the staff better. Suggesting their staff, at its peak and all healthy would have been 19th is just not what most of us thought. Aside from Bregman all those other deals are small”ish”. And my question was, how many more wins would have have with a healthy staff? I say they would be 60-40. That’s very good. This says nothing about their plan for the deadline. I don’t really like it at all. This is where I feel Jed leaves a lot to be desired. Get a top pitcher. This team can win. A top starter and a solid pen arm and give them a chance. I just don’t think he will do that.

Cubs have no control on what the Brewers do. Honest question, what do you think the Cubs record would be if their staff wasn’t decimated by injuries? Being conservative I would say 60-40. That is a team built to win 96 games. I agree Jed normally wasn’t aggressive enough. And I wish he did more. But being fair to him now, he did build a pretty good team this year that caught serious bad luck with injuries and a crazy good Brewers team.

Fair point. But to be fair to Jed, if Horton, Cabrera, Brown and Boyd were healthy all year, or no serious injuries to any of them keeping them out for a crazy amount of time, the Cubs would be very much in the race. And Jed also has no control on the Brewers playing at over 100 win pace. Cubs are right around a 90 win pace with stupid injuries. People can complain all they want about what Jed didn’t do, fact is he did a good job this off season. You can’t work around the injuries they had, and expect to win mid to upper 90’s. This isn’t even talking about Palencia out as long as he has been, Steele not being available all year and numerous other pen injuries. I dont necessarily agree with what Jed is saying, but I do understand it. But again, that doesn’t mean we can’t go after Webb, Detmers, Soriano, a Guardian young pitcher, etc….. Anyone with some years left should be considered.

I don’t care either if it is 3 years left or 3 months left on a contract. However, based on what Jed has said, it doesn’t appear he will be very aggressive because they probably aren’t getting a first round bye. I would think it would be easier to be more aggressive if they traded for someone with more than just this year left. Which is why I think that is what they will be looking for.

They are the Cubs best. But hardly big time innings eating pitchers. Cubs pen has pitched a lot of innings.

I know Jed has commented about spending assets on adding pitching at the TDL being something easier to do if the goal was having a top 2 record in the NL. And if that spending is on a rental I completely agree. I think rentals will end up on teams who are clearly in position for a top 2 spot. However, I don’t see why that should be a factor if they go after a controllable pitcher. Even if all the do is make the playoffs and lose in the first round, they still have that pitcher. While I think where the Cubs are currently will limit how much they spend on a guy for just this year, IMO, it should be a factor with someone Will years of control left. They may need to be creative and do a controlled bat for a controlled arm. Guardians, Red Aox and Mariners could be an option, even for teams in contention. The Angels also have a few guys with several years left. As long as whoever they get is beyond just this year, I think they can still be aggressive. I think instead of focusing on Skubal, Peralta, Holmes, and maybe a few others on the last year of their deals, the focus needs to be on controlled pitchers. They can still make a major trade.

Could you just plug in any pitcher in the rotation with the exact same sentence? That’s what is sad. If it was only Peterson who made that sentence sound ridiculous that wouldn’t be so bad. But sadly, any name you put there sounds equally ridiculous.

At the very least the old man should have been reported. He should have been escorted out of the park. You don’t have to stand for the anthem. In fact, if you rally believe in what America stands for you should understand it is a right NOT to stand if you don’t want to. I may not have turned and hit him back but he would have been reported. I only wouldn’t hit him back because I woukd want to see the game and if I did I would be asked to leave as well. As a STH that wouldn’t be a good look. But that old man would not be at the game after that encounter.

The Cubs WAR from the catcher position is, I believe, top 5 in baseball. Not sure of the need. Just sign Kelly again.

Ok, I understand your reasoning. I don’t agree with it, but at least you have a plan. Cubs offense is top 5-7 in baseball. I can see Kelly coming back next year. Even if they didn’t get a pitcher this TDL I don’t think they need a bat.

I agree. I also think whoever someone wants now will probably change at a later date. Which is why I agree, take whoever you like best.
