    Settle the horsefeathers down bittner. You responded to someone suggesting it might not make sense to deal Happ and Hoerner as if to say they cubs are 4 years into a rebuild in a way that sounded like you were suggesting the FO show some imagination and maybe make some bigger trades. On top of that, I hardly responded negatively to you in a way that would warrant your response back. Maybe you need to take your own advise and give it a rest.

    I get that. But how does trading two of your better players make you better the next year? Unless they are going to be very aggressive next off season(and we know how that will go) how do they get better without Happ and Hoerner?

    The funny thing is what you suggested is exactly what my thoughts were if they were to trade Happ and Hoerner. Maybe you can add Busch to play 3rd and then fill in second with either Morel, Shaw or Triantos. But still same thought. Guarantee a top bat via free agency and a high end bat through trade. And I agree with you, I don’t have faith that would happen.

    I think the point is by trading Happ and Hoerner you are adding more holes to fill next year. If Bellinger is traded and guys like Hendricks, Smyle, Gomes, Mancini, Barnhardt, Neris and maybe they don’t tender a few guys dont they have about maybe $70M they can spend. Wouldn’t they be competitive if they signed Soto and then used some minor league talent to fill a spot at catcher and maybe 3rd base. Maybe even play Shaw at 3rd and use Morel in a trade for a decent controlled pitcher. Maybe you add someone to him to make it happen. Isn’t that easier than also having to fill Happ and Hoerner’s spots as well? Is it a bad think to have two starters who give you WAR at 3 or better?

    I agree that if they then used money to fill spots they can be good next year. Sure, Happ, Hoerner and Bellinger are gone, so sign Soto. Trade some minor league talent for major league talent to play somewhere in the infield. Also use some of the minor league talent for a proven reliable pitcher if they also trade Taillon. Or sign another higher end free agent. I agree if that is what they do they should be ok. I don’t agree with those who suggest to just being Shaw, Triantos and Cassie in to replace guys and expect them to be better than Happ and Hoerner. And I know you aren’t saying that. But some do. My issue is I don’t have faith they will do this. my worry is they do exactly what some suggest. They bring up Triantos, Shaw and Cassie and rebuild again.

    A few problems with this. First, eating a contract could put them over the LT. This is not going to happen in a year they sell. Next, assuming Triantos and Shaw move into those infield positions flawlessly is a huge leap. You are setting yourself up for more rebuilding. Not something I want to see.

    Honesrly it will probably end up more. But it just doesn’t matter. Cubs need to FINALLY land the big FA. If they do trade Happ and also don’t have Bellinger next year they will have enough money to do this and still add. It is time for them to act like a big market team. There is absolutely no reason not to go all in on Soto.

    I agree with you. But this is where the dilemma comes in. Does TR put restraints on the new POBO or does he allow him to treat this team as a large market team. I just don’t see TR allowing it. Which would probably hurt his search for a new top guy. Personally, I think Jed is doing exactly what TR wants. That is why I am not sure he will make a change. The one caveat would be promoting Hawkins but then it is MOTS. Similar to what the white Sox did. See how well that is working.

    I don’t disagree with you. But so many here think Happ and Suzuki are untradeable because they have negative value. I don’t feel that way. I was just suggesting what I felt many fans would be ok doing trading either Happ or Suzuki for less than they are worth. A trade wouldn’t be selling low on their performance this year. I think most fan undervalue both of them regardless of what they are doing at any point in the season. That is what I meant by “selling low”. So many fan just think they can trade one of them and Cassie or Alcantara or even Canario can come up and be just as good. I am not one of these fans.

    I can’t say you are wrong about Hoyer and Hawkins, but Counsel isn’t being fired with 4 more years and $32M owed to him. That is just but happening.!

    I think the Cubs may have known Thompson wasn’t available yesterday and probably wanted Lopez to take the spot. But he couldn’t get to SF before the game. My understanding was Nittoli was close enough to SF that he could be at the game in time. It could have been he was a healthy arm for emergency. They may like him too and hope he accepts a minor league demotion. But for the sake of the game yesterday he was on the ML roster. Who really knows. But it is very odd to pick him up when the very next day you are going to let him go and bring Lopez in. Just thinking maybe availability for yesterdays came into play.

    You are probably wrong. I think people were saying Alzolay to the IL was a phantom injury too. And they were also wrong.

    Sure it does. Probably not this year, but long term they should just leave Busch alone and let him be their first baseman for a long time. Why mess with him playing elsewhere.

    Of course he could. But I am not sure he would. That isn’t the point. The point is he may actually be of value to some team. If he doesn’t want to go it is his absolute right.

    Well a good thing that did come out of yesterday’s game is maybe the Cubs do have a trade chip. Hendricks. I imagine if Kyle keeps pitching like he has the last few times he has been out there, teams will show an interest. He is exactly the sort of guy I would have thought the Cubs would have brought in, had they been buying. Someone to eat some innings and give decent starts. He may have pitched himself into a perfect sell candidate.

    Yeah, the truth is they really don’t have much to sell. They are just in a bad spot. If they only better it will be just a lost season without them even having anything to sell for any real value. I don’t see them trading controlled guys for lower level prospects. I know everyone wants to see Happ, Suzuki, Nico, Swanson or even Morel traded because they have this belief we have better waiting in the minors. But in truth all that does is push the rebuild back more years. And we all know this is not a rebuild…… (sure it’s not). I think the Cubs will most likely do very little at the deadline. Just play the season out. Don’t expect much from them, but I don’t see anything major coming or going. Just a very terrible spot to be in. Maybe it will be so bad that they will have to do something with the FO. But I wouldn’t bet on it because I am not sure TR wants to hire someone who might actually want to spend money to win.

    Yep, damn pen gave up 1 run in 3 2/3 innings. Definitely this loss is on them. BTW, I do expect more runs now that Little is in. But hard to complain about the one up until Little. Edit: 1 run in 4 2/3. They do suck, but not today.

    Defense is keeping the Cubs borderline in this game. Or course they have to also score runs. Not sure that is going to happen.

    Not really. Had the 1-1 pitch been called a strike we don’t know if he makes the same pitch on 1-2 as he did 2-1. Everything is different. He isn’t pitching well, period. It’s not the umpires fault.
