  1. Yes. This is the answer for me as well. They can probably even sign a bench bat with the $5M to $8M they would still probably have available.
  2. But if the Cubs did get Bregman I would imagine Nico would be traded to get some salary relief. So even if a 3 team deal could be worked out I don’t see how they take on Cease, who cost more than Nico, or King who isn’t much of a savings. I can see Nico for Woo or Miller as a better move for the Cubs.. really don’t want Tucker, Bregman and SD pitcher all as free agents next year and no Nico either. Problem is the Mariners want to cut salary too, so a third team has to get involved here as well. And no idea how that happens. I honestly can’t see how Bregman comes here and the Cubs trade Nico.
  3. Nope. Then you have 3 guys who will walk next year without an extension AND no Nico. If they can’t get Bregman and keep Nico or at least trade him for a guy with 3 more years of control I don’t want Bregman. I honestly doubt there is anything to the Cubs getting him anyway. How much would the Astros have had to mess up this Pressley deal for that to happen. Do you really think they gave the Cubs $5.5M and because of that the Cubs outbid them for Bergman’s services. The GM should be fired if that happened. I think Bregman is using the Cubs as leverage but there is nothing there.
  4. If you like him as a middle relief pitcher it is a solid deal. Personally I didn’t want him. Robertson is my first choice. They can afford him. I like Finnegan, Estevez and Chafin all better than Stanek, as well.
  5. Except I think SD reeally wants to move Suarez more than King or Cease. I think Suarez is basically a throw in with one of those guys. I think he option on his contract makes his contract makes him more of a liability than an asset. I don’t see Robertson and Suarez added, unless the Cubs move either Merryweather or Pearson in that deal.
  6. This would be my order as well. The only deviation from this would be my skimping would be in the second bat, not Stanek instead of Robertson. Just not a fan of Stanek. If the relief pitcher got skimped on I might rather have Chafin. That would be my skimp on Robertson.
  7. I know I have disagreed with you in the past about this, but now I am with you. A “Bellinger like” deal for either of those guys would be great. I doubt they do it, but if they did, I would be on board with it. My guess is either a SD trade (King and Suarez) and then maybe a small FA signing for the bench or they sign Robertson and some bench help.
  8. I agree. No interest in Stanek. I think they have better on the team. But if they could get Robertson that would be fine. Or if they trade for Suarez. A lefty would be good, but I feel Chafin is the only one available and he is a reverse split guy.
  9. I agree with you on Merryweather. I am not convinced he makes the team. And he can be replaced. But I think Pearson is decent and will be in the roster. Again, I guess if they trade for King and Suarez, Pearson can be in the trade. Maybe instead of Assad and Wicks and a minor league bat, it can be Assad OR Wicks with Pearson and a minor leaguer.
  10. Maybe he gets traded for someone who doesn’t have to bank the 40 man. Or an add on in a trade for a guy who makes the team this year.🤷
  11. You think they might sign 2 more middle relief pitchers for more than $5M each, for the opening day roster? How many pitchers do you think they are going to have in the pen? I agree they can spend up to $20M. Actually, I would be surprised they spent that much. But if they did, unless they work out a trade with the Padres, I don’t see them adding a starting pitcher. The only pen arm I would hope they get would be Robertson. I know Chafin is out there too, and they can use a lefty, but he is not exactly a lefty specialist. I guess Raley is an option who might help after the ASB. But I am not counting him for opening day. I can see one pen arm and one bat.(unless they make a trade)
  12. I think the kids would be brought up in the event of an injury or a longer term stay at a position. I would still rather have a Moncada, Canha, Grichik or Polanco on the bench. And if there is an injury then you bring a kid up. They have the money to add one and still add either another pen arm or a starting pitcher like King.
  13. I don’t have much of an issue trading for King. But including Brown and Wicks in the mix of a window expanding to later years, might not come to pass. Those guys might be in the trade.
  14. I disagree, but I am fine agreeing to disagree.
  15. That may be the way you see it. But the Mariners have given no indication they plan on trading either Kirby or Gilbert.
  16. I agree with this.’
  17. I agree with part about the Padres asking for what they ask and not caring about what happens after the trade. I disagree that the team trading for a particular player doesn’t consider if he can be retained. That is, of course, unless their plan is to only have a guy for one year. But if the Cubs are looking long term and really want a pitcher now who they also hope to keep after this season, I would think they would be more aggressive with a trade for whichever they think they can sign. The buying team has to factor that in IMO. Unless, of course, if the man calling the shots is on the last year of his contract, maybe he doesn’t care……
  18. Delete. Double post
  19. I realize the current team couldn’t care less about if the team he is traded to can sign him long term. But I have to believe that’s a consideration for the team trying to get one of those players. If a team values them equally I would think they would go a little harder on King than Cease if they felt his agent would be easier to deal with than Boras. That is, or course, if retaining either is even something the team trading for one of them is something they want to do. In the case of the Cubs, I would hope they would traded or one of them either the intent on!extending whoever they traded for.
  20. Since Cease cost more and probably is less likely to sign an extension, would he cost less than King in a trade? Or do you suppose asking price is similar?
  21. Yep. If they did pull off a trade for King and Suarez I would say they are exactly what they said they wanted to be, a team who projects to a 90 win season. Maybe even a #2 team in the NL.
  22. So you are saying Wicks, Assad and Cassie for King and Suarez? That does weaken the pitching depth a bit, after 2025. But it certainly would make the Cubs very formidable.
  23. Yes they do. He would have been a much better choice than Rea.
  24. Exactly. And I dont necessarily agree with that logic either. But I doubt the Cubs signed Rea to be a swing man, so Assad can be in the rotation. And TBH, I like Wicks more than Assad, if they aren’t going with Rea. I just think he signed to be the #5 guy. And with Assad and Wicks having options I expect them to start at AAA.
  25. I am completely on board with a trade for a #2 or #3 starter. I just don’t think they will do that. I understand Robertson too, and wouldn’t be opposed to him. But they have a lot of guys in that one. At lease one good bench bat would be nice. But if I really thought they wouks trade for a guy to slot ahead of Tailon that would be what I would spend the money on.
