    I am not just using that logic with Smith. You are right, Shaw may never make it. But 200 AB doesn’t tell me unequivocally that Smith will be a star and Shaw a bust. I also agree that right now Smith’s stock is going up while Shaw is going down. Wasn’t there a time the Sox wouldn’t trade Robert for PCA? How is that working now? It really doesn’t matter if a guys trade value is up or down when they aren’t looking to be traded anyway. No difference than your home value going up when you have no intention of selling. I also don’t disagree with getting Suarez to play 3rd this year. But I think adding pitching is more important. I wouldn’t object to adding Suarez. But that doesn’t mean I am giving up on Shaw.

    I get it, and understand. But even if it isn’t flipped tonight, that doesn’t mean long term it won’t be. This idea that Smith is obviously better (a future star) than Shaw because after 250 AB he is better is dumb. Steve Sax won ROY the year Sandberg came up. Who had a better career? Jerome Walton won ROY. How did that turn out? MLB is filled with guys who start good and end up ok or even not very good. And also with guys who start slower and become stars. Yes, it is frustrating to see right now. But what is happening now doesn’t really have any bearing on how Shaw or Smith end up. It can change as fast as the next 100AB. Maybe not today, however.

    I know that. That is why I didn’t like the idea. But they did it. I am not arguing that is was a good idea. It wasn’t. But now that they did do it, there are no excuses for adding whoever they want. I am just not sure they add that much payroll anyway. BUT THEY COULD!

    But, but, but….. Smith? How does that happen????? He is obviously going to be a superstar, right? I mean he is hitting .270 with OPS of .750. And a rookie. Has to be a star, right? I mean how many guys do that and then bust????. I would guess less than 70% right? So 30% become decent players. Those are great odds, right. Yep, he has to be a star and Shaw has to suck. Cubs have to be stupidly. They always are, right???

    I can almost guarantee there will not be a massive trade to improve the offense.

    You had me agreeing either way you until the end. Why is it likely ownership lets him walk? Name a FA at Kyle’s level the Cubs let walk. All this talk of “well they never spent that money before” gets used as an example of why they won’t spend. Tell me a scenerio like this one where they let the superstar walk.

    The think with Tucker, thou I do think they will retain him, is if they don’t where do they spend the money? Schwarber? Bellinger? Who? I think they will add a big bat and maybe an arm, depending on what they add this season. If they added Schwarber at something like 6/$162m would that make up for not getting Tucker? Maybe Bellinger 6/$138m? As I said, I think they will retain Tucker, but there are other, cheaper, options.

    If they do believe Tucker will be here after this year that allows them to be more aggressive with the young bats. So I do believe it is a factor.

    Yes! Except what should be added is you trade MINOR LEAGUE assets for MAJOR LEAGUE ASSETS.

    What happens by stashing payroll is at the deadline no player is off limits. The payroll is not a problem. I do not necessarily like them doing what they did. I cost them a better player earlier. But now they can get whoever they want and not have payroll be an issue. Will they🤷. But they can. I think you mentioned deGrom. Yes, they can even afford him this year. How many teams can eat his salary? The mega spenders can, but it will also cost them the same in luxury tax. The Cubs can afford him and not pay LT. I doubt they fk after deGrom, but they can.

    That is just it. This idea we have to wait for a system guy to come up and not trade someone is silly to me. Trade who you have to in order to get better. If the guy you trade becomes a star, oh well. It happens. If that guy is a star but the guy you for for him helps the team to the WS, it is worth the cost. Cubs lost Torres for Chapman. Torres turned into a pretty good player. But the Cubs don’t even get past SF without Chapman. And they won the WS. So the trade is a win for the Cubs.

    There are a lot of variables. If they feel good about retaining Tucker any hitter(s) is/are available. So maybe they go for Alcantara. If they want to hedge then maybe Kelly, Keller, or Lugo type guys. Guys with just this year left shouldn’t be that costly. Because Keller has several years left but at 15M a year he might not be that costly. Honestly, you have to do what’s necessary this year. Honestly if you traded for Bedard and Keller and then still got Alcantara you can use all those guys this year and then trade one or two of them next year to replenish the farm. You will have Steele coming back with Imanaga, Boyd and Taillon plus you would have young arms like Wiggins, Horton & Brown for the rotation. You wouldn’t need both Keller and Alcantara. I am honestly not worried about deleting the farm. They need to do what’s necessary they can this year. They have the prospects and room in the payroll. They can replenish the farm later. I also do think they will retain Tucker.

    What we are seeing is the. Cubs are 14 games over .500 a game past the halfway point of the season. They are playing at a 94-95 win pace. If the rest of the central was playing as expected maybe one team would have been 2 to 4 games over .500. And the Cubs lead would be 5 or 6 games in the midst of a slump. Cubs are doing very well this season. It just so happens the central is doing well too. The Cubs can’t do anything about that. However, had you told me the Cubs would be 48-34 after 82 games, in the beginning of the season, I would have been very happy. They need at least one more starting pitcher. If he is a MOR type, they probably need 2. They can use another pen arm and probably another bat. But they are playing as well as anyone should have expected this season.

    Can people give it a rest with the same old comment “Cubs won’t resign Tucker” ? Can we just let the season play out and see what happpens? No one knows what they will end up doing.

    You also have to factor in acquisition cost. Alcantara is going to cost way more. Cabrera will cost more as well and I am really not sure this year he will be better. I like him because we have him longer. But for this year I am not sure he does any better at a higher cost to acquire.

    It is going to be frustrating. Because I am sure most people are looking at half a season and going to decide Smith will be a star and Shaw is a bust. Cubs traded the wrong guy, etc, etc, etc. But there is so much gray in each of those comments. I remember just last year maybe close to this time in the season or might have been a little earlier. Some of our fanbase was down on Busch and commenting how come the Brewers can bring up Ortiz and he be good from the start. Some wanted Busch sent down. Same with Chorious and PCA. I think some fans loved Jordon Walker of the Cardinals. Just because one guy starts good and the other does not doesn’t dictate their career path. Smith might go on to be a star and Shaw might be a bust. But it can also go the other way. Most likely each player will land somewhere better than bust but less than all star. 200 AB does not determine a guys career. And as for the trade, to get a guy like Tucker you have to trade quality. Maybe we should thank Jed for drafting Smith, a guy the Astros wanted, in the first place. Maybe also thank him for trading Morel and Bjggie for Parades. Houston was said to be in on him at the deadline. Had Jed not gotten him we would have never had Tucker.

    Even with underlying numbers not being as good as his actual results, he is still better and ready, now, to pitch than any of the guys mentioned to be like him. And because of his contract and his possible opt out at the end of the year or his option to stay another year, he should come cheaper than most. He isn’t great, but far better than Rea and he also might allow the Cubs to slow some Horton innings. I think Cabrera cost more and Alcantara even more than that.

    He is who he is. He speaks and acts before he thinks sometimes. But he did retract those comments too. I have been told by me reason ticket rep he is a very nice humble guy. So I choose to believe that and just think he runs hot and that sometimes gets him in trouble.

    Actually he has always been a little bitch. But before he was our bitch so we loved him. Now he is an Cardinal so we hate that attitude. I like Willson, but I am also glad we don’t have him any longer.

    I have a feeling fans are going to be shocked and upset at what the Cubs will have to give up to get a quality starting pitcher. But they have to do it.
