    Huge homer for Happ. However, not over yet. Dbacks have had some big 8th innings. I should know. I was at the one the Cubs blew in Arizona.

    If it works 1/3 of the time that is better odds than keeping him at 3rd for the next guy to come up with 2 outs.

    Yes, they have to do the contactplay every time there is a guy in 3rd and one out. It is the play to use. Has they not run PCA flies out for the 3rd out anyway. I don’t understand why people have such a hard time with that play.

    Prior to this year Morgan has had FIP era under 4 each of his last 3 seasons. He has done that while appearing in over 130 games. I would be thrilled if Little can do that. Sure, Morgan can be hitting his spots and still get crushed every once in a while, but his career stats really don’t back that statement. This year he has been bad. But he might be injured. 🤷 I would take a healthy Morgan over a guy who can’t throw strikes, no matter how good that guys stuff is. maybe if Little can start finding the zone he can be special. But right now he sucks and has yet to prove he is someone any team can count on.

    I don’t disagree with this. But it is a factor, regardless. And the small market teams also have other advantages the Cubs don’t have. Which brings me right back to Jed isn’t great, but he isn’t the dumbest executive in baseball either. He is probably middle of the pack and definitely not on par with the Brewers FO.

    I think for PCA to sign an extension the Cubs need to be looking closer to the Jackson Merrill extension (9/$135M) than Harris and Chourio. I don’t know how many years the Cubs offered for that $75M. If it was 7 years that is still a little short, unless they had 2 team options after that for $30M each. Then the dollars are right, but not the guarantee. To me the Merrill contract is the one you compare PCA’s too.

    I think my issue is some grade Jed on the resources the Cubs should have rather than the resources ownership allows Jed to have. Yes, on one hand a large market team in a division with small market teams should dominate. However if that large market team operates like a small market team, without the advantages a small market team does have, based on the current CBA, they are actually putting a team together at a disadvantage over the other teams. Jed definitely makes mistakes. But he also does good at times. That is why I rank him middle of the pick, basically an average front office (C).

    Even before Little pitched yesterday I was hoping Wicks was the 2nd arm coming up with Palencia. I have never been a fan of Little and don’t understand why many are. Sure, if he figures out how to throw strikes, he could be good. But so far he has yet to do that in his entire career, including the minors.

    I am not arguing he is ready now. My post was based on when he is ready. That is why I said “provided he shows he is ready over the next several starts”. Once he shows he is ready why keep him down? I think they will do what Jason suggested. Bring him up for the pen. That would be getting use out of him and monitoring his innings. Maybe he could make it through the entire season and not get to 120 innings that way. As Jason said, it is a balancing act. What is good for Horton as well as the Cubs, has to be what they base their decision on. The players long term health absolutely should come first.

    The thing is if his max innings pitched this year is 120, if he is ready in mid May, why have him throw those innings in the minors? It isn’t like he won’t be pitching at AAA, unless they hold him to only 4 or 5 innings by design. If they plan on allowing him to throw 90 to 100 pitches after a few more starts, how is 90 pitches at AAA and different that 90 in the majors? This is provided he shows he is ready after a few more starts.

    Did Hoyer draft Nico and Happ? Wasn’t that Theo? And for that matter, how many guys drafted in Nico and Happ’s draft have performed to their level, anyway? Should he really be criticized for those picks? As for Wicks and Howard, I agree with you. But with Shaw, I am not sure he is someone they drafted to be good, not great. Seems lately they are taking bigger swings at great, Horton being an example. Same with some guys they draft later. Hope was another example. They got to use him to get Busch because they swung at a high end guy and got lucky with him, to the point of another team wanting him. I agree they used to take the safe guy, but I think that is changing. As for being risk adverse and too conservative in free agency, I have to put that in ownership. I can’t blame Jed there. We will see what happens with Tucker. If the Cubs don’t extend him, IMO, that is all ownership. And it will confirm it was all ownership all the time. That said, I can’t argue much about your grading. I would but him at a C, as opposed to the C- you suggested. And only because I think he does have his hands tied by ownership so I don’t blame him as much. He isn’t good, but not the worst, either.

    It is pretty standard managing that the team in the lead uses there best pitchers while the team trailing does not. At least not if they went the day before. And, for that matter, the Padres didn’t use Jason Adam, who is one of their best. I think that has the Cubs been winnjng you would have seen Hisge and Pressly. Maybe not Merryweather for a 4th time in 5 games. Today it was a decent day to see what the kids can do. It just didn’t work.

    Workman hasn’t played above AA until this year. And stuck out often when he did play last year. While I am fine with him over Berti, nothing about him shows he has potential to develope into something, unless by something you mean a utility guy. Again, I would rather see him start as well. But I don’t expect much out of him either. And Counsell’s decision to go with Berti over Workman is much closer to a 50/50 flip of the coin than you are suggesting by saying you are baffled by this decision. Honestly, whether it is Workman, Brujan, Berti or Turner it is not a surprise to me. Counsell is just going with who he feels gives him the best chance that day. None of those guys is a guy the Cubs have to start over any of the others, IMO.
