The best time to extend him was last off-season, the off-season before he becomes a FA, and if I recall that's what the Cubs did with Ian Happ. The next best time is now. He might not go for it but if the Cubs dangled a market-value contract at him (4 years 96 mill) I'm sure he'd seriously consider it. My fear is that another big market team like the Blue Jays or Yankees show interest in him this off-season and it becomes a bidding war. I can also see the Phillies, Padres, White Sox interested.

I wish the Cubs didn't wait around to do it. He's entering "best available Free Agent" territory and it makes me uneasy. He has clearly established himself as the 2nd best player in this lineup and losing him would hurt immensely. He also came here as a 27 year old rookie, doesn't have the same wear-and-tear on his body that others do against major league pitching. Very much a guy that can still be highly productive into his mid-30s.

Well, 2 more innings to make something happen because Toronto has a great, great closer. Probably as good as any after Mason Miller

Oh yeah, I forgot about that long double to Happ. I'm pretty out on Cabrera as a starter though until I see some major improvement. Nothing he's done to date has been that impressive. Just odd that we'd take out a guy who has given up 2 ER or less in what, 5/6 of his starts here. I get that he's had some games like today though where he's probably been more lucky than good. But he's also been really good at times.

I disagree, he's given up nothing but soft ground balls with a few exceptions. Outside of a horrible balk, game should be 0-0 after 5 innings. He's done his job. If Cabrera was pitching today, we'd get the Cabrera special. 3 ER after 5 IP.

I don't see how the Cubs can take Peterson out of the rotation when Cabrera comes back.

I read that Vlad Jr. hasn't hit a home run in his home stadium all year long. Pretty wild stuff for a guy who's in year 2 of a 14 year contract.

Cease always seems to dominate when he comes to Wrigley. Hopefully the Cubs can get some payback from his wildcard start last year
