  1. Steve Traschel would like to know why he wasn't included on your list. . .
  2. He didn't lie. He never said, "I never took steroids." I'm not saying that his response of "I've made mistakes" was full admission, he never denied using steroids. The fact remains: his testimony, as was all testimony in the grand jury phase, was sealed. He didn't have to admit to anything. I think he paid more than his fair share with all the health problems he had the past couple of years and will continue to pay with future medical problems he's sure to have as a result of the steroids. You reap what you sow, as the saying goes.
  3. Relax, the point wasn't to insult, just to do something a little different. The point remains that it's impossible to find someone that's unquestionably clean. Maybe "unqeustionable clean" maybe TOO HIGH of a standard in today's baseball, but I still wouldn't take Giambi, who not only used steroids, but LIED about taking steroids. No thank you. A cheat is one thing, but a cheat and a LIAR, no way. Call it the Sammyitis. He didn't lie about taking steroids, did he? He came clean to the grand jury, but I don't remember any accusations that he denied before that. If you're talking about his nondenial denial at the beginning of last season, he was just doing all that was asked of him legally. That testimony was considered sealed and he didn't have to comment on it.
  4. Don't let Len read that. He'll turn on you quicker than Dusty did on Steve Stone.
  5. Actually, Daske had a problem with this specific article for being a "downer". Well, it's not like I'm sitting in a dark room crying about it.
  6. I can't imagine that he loses any time to the DL. He probably just jammed his finger and needs time for the swelling to go down a bit. Depending on if he jammed his throwing hand, they may want to be a little precatious and have Blanco start on Friday.
  7. My problem with the article is that it's basically "yeah, they're all doing good, but it won't last." It just seemed like a very downer type of article for so early in the season. He could have done with same article with a different tone and called it "Early Season Surprises." Then I wouldn't have had a problem with it.
  8. I don't like reading Dayn Perry on Fox Sports just because all he knows how to do are lists, but this caught my eye because I saw Maddux involved: http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/5535848 Regardless of how accurate he may or may not be in his assessments, isn't it a little early to pour cold water on some great early-season performances? Will Maddux go 30-0 with a 0.75 ERA? Of course not, but it doesn't mean we can't expect great things from him this season. Will Chris Shelton and Ty Wigginton become the Pujols' of the AL? It would be ridiculous to think so, but let these guys have their day in the sun. Maybe Perry shouldn't concern himself with what won't be, and focus on what is happening around him.
  9. I have the perfect outfit. Everyone wears big red wigs and carries a giant net. The net, of course, is to help catch the balls that Murton can't get into the bleacher seats at the end of an inning. :)
  10. Dare I follow up into this thread? From an opposing viewpoint, D-Lee last year defended his teammates against booing and didn't show up opposing pitchers throughout an MVP-calibre year. No one had a problem with D-Lee. . . okay, I have to leave before I get too embroiled in this argument.
  11. It won't make him less aggressive, it'll make him less fun to show on Sportscenter. They want a guy who's going to go nuts. It makes for entertaining television. Why else would they show Z breaking a bat over his knee?
  12. I'd go with the former. If you're an everyday player and you know going in that your SP sucks, it puts more of the onus on you and the offense to carry the team. You're not relying on one person on the mound for the win. However, let's say your starting pitching and offense carry you to a 5-3 lead in the seventh inning. You're feeling pretty good until the bullpen transforms the game into a 6-5 loss. That, to me, is the more demoralizing event. You got a pretty solid effort from your lousy SP there. What if you go into the game knowing you've got a real good chance at being down 8-5 by the seventh? I demand a trade.
  13. How many pitches did Murton see in that last at-bat? I'm just wondering if Dusty/Klines aggressive approach was adhered to or not.

  15. It was actually Prior for Tejada straight up. The rumor is that Hendry asked for Bedard along with Tejada and Baltimore balked, justifiably as it turned out.
  16. Yes, but they would have to pay royalties to the estate of Steve Goodman for the use of that song. Why not just get some in-house producer to come up with crap year after year. :)
  17. I was torn because 24 was wrapping up just the bases were juiced for Matt Murton. Jack Bauer v. Matt Murton. Murton won. And Jack ended up on a plane.
  18. We weren't booing. We were saying "Boo-rns, boo-rns." This has been your Simpsons reference of the day. Thank you.
  19. I hate the excuse, but technically, thanks to Selig's lack of a reaction to the growing trend of roids at the time, steroids weren't illegal back then, and there was nothing the umps could have done. I know, but for someone who accuses the Cubs of cheating at every turn, there's a little saying about people who live in glass houses. Even if it wasn't illegal, it was cheating.
  20. [opening can of worms] So should opposing managers have asked the umps to check for steroids every time McGwire or Canseco came up in Larussa's lineups? You know, for gamemanship? [/opening can of worms]
  21. Ken Caminitti, Doc Gooden, Daryl Strawberry and Cecil Fielder, I'm looking at you.
  22. I just returned from the Wrigley garage sale and it looks like it was a huge success. The doors opened at 8 a.m. and I got there around 10, so much of the good stuff was gone by then. The saddest thing I saw were a box of signed balls. The signers? Kevin Orie, Ismael Valdez and Bobby Hill. The price for each? $6 marked down from $20. Too bad for them. The only purchas I made was buying a brick from the old bleachers. The only proof that I didn't get hosed is a little holographic MLB sticker. So now I have a brick that I don't know what to do with. But the coolest part of the sale was the fact that they had the bleachers open for a free tour. I gotta say they looked dynamite. Nice concources and the seats looked good. Any other successes?
  23. I'm sorry, but unless Clemens can fill a gaping hole in our offense, he has no place on the Cubs. Our pitching has been, and will once Wood/Prior/Miller return, a strength. As Clemens, who was as mentioned above was arguarbly the best pitcher in the NL last year, knows from experience, what good is a 1.87 ERA if your team doesn't score runs?

While I understand the idea of trading when value is highest, I don't think trading for Miggy would solve our current dilemma. Ronny is a good hitter and is aggressive on the basepaths. His defense will sorely be tested with DLee unable to bail him out of bad throws, but overall he is a strength to this club. I wouldn't advocate moving a cheap, prodcutive player unless the result would get us over the top for a division/WS. At this point, I just don't see that trade being effective enough to stem the loss of DLee. However, if there were a way to prove that Prior and Wood were coming back within the month and would be effective for the remainder of the year, I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to moving some of our young pitching. As much as I love hearing postiive things about Guzman in AAA, if he was the centerpiece to getting Miggy (with maybe 2 lower level prospects moved also), where do I sign?
