  1. If they screened the questions properly, we would never hear about how much he hates Wood and Prior questions because he would never receive them. I understand the jaded bit, but I mean come on. If you constantly insult the people who are reading your reports and boo-hooing at every perceived slight by the Cubs organization, who are you doing a service to? I've become convinced that Sullivan's work is largely schtick intentionally designed to give the impression that the Trib isn't providing biased coverage towards the team they in fact own. Just to play devil's advocate on this, say Bruce Miles had his articles published by the Tribune. Would the perception be that his work was biased? Probably not, which goes back to the overall bitterness and some times sensationalistic quality of Paul Sullivan's work.

  3. At least Cubs fans have universally called Sullivan a crybaby on the Tribune site. One thing that I always think is funny is that most Tribune columnists respond to readers directly in the blogs if there is a point that is incorrect or the columnist chooses to defend him/herself. However, Sullivan calls is a Cubs "mailbag" and lambastes readers for stupid questions. Personally, I like sending him the weekly email asking about the status of Prior and Wood because I know it bothers him so.
  4. what he said ^^^ <--- starts throwing beer cups onto the field to get the feud to continue. . .
  5. I'm not saying all Bears fans were the problem, but I was at the game and I heard some really, really terrible things being said to some Saints fans that were nearby. And a buddy of mine corraborated that story from another section of the stadium. I mean, we're talking despicable things. Although I will admit that other Bears fans and I took turns shouting those drunken idiots out.
  6. If we're going to go afer an injury-plagued RF, I'd prefer we take a look at Dye. He'll cost less in terms of talent, and is only signed through this season. If he can keep it up as he has since coming back from the DL, he'd be exciting to have on the team. I just fear that Griffey would cost us pitching that will bite us in the butt for years in addition to the salary we'd have to potentially absorb.
  7. That may be the case. Or it may be the case that the most classless of "fans" are getting more brazen about how they display their stupidity. No matter what though, I think we can all agree that the bad apples make it that much worse for the rest of us who just want to enjoy the game.
  8. At a certain point, it's no longer certain Cubs fans giving Chicago a bad name. It exends out to all Chicago sports fans. From the Sox fans who take it upon themselves to beat up anyone on the field, to Bears fans who openly hostile and disgusting to visiting New Orleans Saints fans in the 2006 NFC Championship game, and certainly the recent spat of Cubs fans who litter the field and charge Bob Howry for no discernable reason. I hate to think of the city I love as a bunch of backwater hicks that can't hold their liquor and know right from wrong, but sports fans in this city are nothing to be proud of right now. The few idiots make it that much harder for good fans to be taken respectably.
  9. ESPN reporting that it's on the verge of happening. Sharpen the pitchforks. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2938997 Pat Hughes now announcing it's official.
  10. Voodoo = funny. Crank calls to players and their families = classless Yes, going out of your way to hope for a player to get injured is real funny. :? After reading the entire article, I would say Garner is classless. Why doesn't he try to switch something up with his team and get them to perform at a higher level, rather than wishing ill upon the opposition? I fail to see in humor in it. Because it's silly to think that a major league manager would resort to witchcraft because a pitcher dominates his team. That's funny. It would also be funny to imagine Phil Garner working to find a voodoo priest.

  12. that's no fun So you're against fun, huh?
  13. No, but I'm pretty sure I know where Aramis Ramirez, Kenny Lofton, and Nomar Garciapara are. And lest we forget a certain first baseman?
  14. Isn't that a lot like your parents telling you "We'll see" after you beg for a new toy?
  15. If Wagner is involved as well with the bid, there's going to be no easy way for MLB to deny them. And the Cuban/Wagner assets (entertainment and online media holdings) would be a lot more attractive to integrate into the Tribune than what other ownership groups offer. The mere fact that we're resigned to the fact that MLB would not give Cuban a fair shake is reason enough for Congress to modify MLB's anti-trust exemption. The owner should be chosen based on the best interests of the team, not because the owners are scared of controversey.
  16. Toronto: "You take him!" Baltimore: "Heck no. We've been taking Cubs cast-offs for years. It's your turn Canada!" Toronto: "He wouldn't be able to handle the exchange rate. He's yours!" Baltimore: GAAAAHHH!! Hendry, you beat us again!"
  17. How about it! I didn't realize that Murton had an .889 OPS in Iowa. Get him up here and put him in the #2 spot.
  18. The Phillies are the same number of games out in their division as the Cubs, why would they want to take a bunch of garbage and pay the same amount that they are paying for Burell? Well, they did trade Abreu and Lidle to the Yanks and that worked out for them quite well. Maybe they can capture that same trade magic again?
  19. Does Hendry not remember the disaster Dempster has been in his career as a starter? The only time he's displayed any value to a team is when he became the Cubs closer. Even when he started briefly in 2005 for the Cubs it was pretty awful.
  20. I think they still do the HR derby. If I read the release correctly, they have the HR Derby but will all sportscasters will be in Bristol and not on the field in San Francisco. The only ESPN reporters that will be allowed on site are Peter Gammons and -shudder- Dusty Baker.
  21. Not that I'm one to defend ESPN, but this is ridiculous on MLB's part. Once the All Star rosters get into the news cycle (especially off an AP report), it's fair game to report as they see fit. Was it wrong of NSBB to share news of the All-Star selections as they happened, even though we clearly don't have an exclusive arrangement with the MLB? ESPN was doing its job.
  22. I can't imagine that's the case. If you have a solid medical reason for taking a medication, no organization can ban you from taking them. I'm sure that certain players have received exemptions so long as they're under a doctor's care (as long as the doctor isn't Dr. Nick).
  23. I have one word: schadenfreude. Happiness at the misfortune of others.
  24. And Carlos officially losesto Chris Young.
  25. Roy Oswalt was added to the roster in place of Smoltz. And then there were four. . .
