  1. I didn't see anything in there about increasing OBP, so until then, he's got a ways to go.
  2. 2003, they were five outs from the World Series. 2007, they were seven games from the World Series. Not even close on the pain scale. 2007 was like a rugburn compared to the amputation of 2003.
  3. There's no reason to bring this up. And no. The Cubs would have to give up a boatload of talent for a declining middle infielder who is going to turn 34 next year, and would be on the hook for 3/30, and most likely a large extension. But again, there's no point in even bringing this up. Sorry, I thought this was a forum for discussion. Didn't mean to offend your sensibilities. It was a simple question.
  4. It was a decent documentary. However, if you're looking for a lot of vintage Harry, you're going to be disappointed. It's much more heavy on interviews with Harry's contemporaries and friends.
  5. Okay, here's a hypothetical situation for you all to consider. Keep in mind that there is probably NO way this will happen, but I want to see everyone's thoughts. The Yankees decide it's time to turn the corner and go younger. Derek Jeter is made available in a trade with the Yankees picking up half of his remaining salary. Should the Cubs get involved?
  6. yes. Selling the Cubs w/o Wrigley wouldnt maximize the bids. Besides, if that were to happen, how long before the Cubs new owner decided to build a new stadium and ditch Wrigley all together? It's just a negotiating ploy to get bidders to start high. Maybe the Trib should hire Boras. In that case, Tom Hicks or Steinbrenner would overpay for the entire team.
  7. Call me crazy, but what good does mailing the tickets back to the Cubs do? It's not like they can be used at any other game in the future. They're simply momentos at this point. (Although I did buy two 2003 Cubs World Series tickets off of ebay a couple years ago).
  8. +1 I started watching the Daily Show, switching back and forth between commercial breaks. Once I realized the Cubs weren't going to pull out on that game, I went to bed. No sports team is worth breaking my own stuff or yelling at people.
  9. Did anyone hear/see on WGN news this morning about someone hanging a carcass of a goat on Caray's statue infront of Wrigley? Yeah, those are some pretty sick people (I refuse to call them fans). They hung a skinned goat right out in the open. This tactic alone tells me that not only will Bartman get booed mercilessly if allowed to sing the stretch, but there will be a gaggle of drunken idiots waiting for him up by the press box. Keep Bartman away for his own personal well-being.
  10. Wowsa, would you look at the beak on Webb! I'm surprised his nose wasn't wearing a hat!
  11. Are you serious? I'd be beyond furious if in a must win situation (win or go home until 2008) and my ace starting pitcher sat on the bench and watched the team lose. I'd bring back my ace on the same exact rest Zambrano was getting, and take my chances. Let me rephrase it. What if the role was reversed. Cubs had home field advantage and the Cubs are down 2-1 in Arizona. Arizona is going with Brandon Webb on short rest. Cubs decide to give Zambrano extra rest and go with Sean Marshall In Arizona. If Marshall loses that game to Webb, Zambrano gets way more rest than I'd like to see him get. About 4 months worth. Do you really believe Arizona would sit their ace down 2-1 on the road? Maybe they would, but I sure wouldn't. I'd like my chances much better playing at home the last game. What he said. :)
  12. Hmmm. I wouldn't bet the farm on that one. If the Cubs somehow won the next two games, I doubt that the D-Backs would risk their season on a rookie pitching against Zambrano, IN Chicago. My guess is if the Cubs are up 2-1, Webb is pitching on Sunday. If Arizona is up 2-1, Webb pitches on Tuesday in Arizona. It would be real nice for the Cubs to be up 2-1 in this series rather than down 2-1 come Sunday. I think it would be a terrible decision for the Diamondbacks if they moved Webb up. He has never pitched on 3 days rest in his career, and the Diamondbacks have no real reason to move him up like the Cubs do. The difference between Micah Owings and Doug Davis is a lot smaller than the difference between Ted Lilly and Jason Marquis. The D-Backs would be giving themselves less chance of winning the series just to give them a greater chance of winning game 4. I hope they make that decision, but I doubt they will. But if the D-Backs are facing elimination, the difference between Webb on short rest versus Owning/Davis can be quite significant. Personally, the only way I see Arizona NOT using Webb in game four is if they're up 2-1. That way they can hope to clinch the series at Wrigley with Ownings/Davis or use Webb on regular rest at home.
  13. Yeah, but Webb isn't a line-drive/flyball kind of pitcher. His sinker is his bread and butter pitch, so it seems natural that the grounds crew would help him out in that regard. But I have to imagine it would have helped keep balls in the infield and prevent high choppers from getting past the fielders.
  14. Yeah, there was a lot of fishiness going on last night. Webb definitely had something on the brim of his cap, be it pinetar or grease. Also, Pat & Ron were saying how the ground in front of homeplate had extra dirt and it was wet to soften the area, helping Webb with his groundball tendencies. Theoretically, it helped Z induce some groundballs as well, but it still is a little bit of dirty pool. Hopefully, the grass is real high at Wrigley this weekend, with the exception of Sunday when Webb pitches again.
  15. [east coast bias rant] These start times are ridiculous. The Cubs have enough of a national presence that they shouldn't be given second billing on the playoff schedule. The Red Sox and Yankees get enough airtime, do we really need to give them the opening games on Wednesday and Thursday? And how much do you want to bet that if the games go long they're not going to cut away to the first pitch of the Cubs game? I really, really, really hate this new arrangement. There was a caller on WGN that proposes that fans during Game Three on Saturday chanting "We hate TBS." I wholeheartedly endorse that cause. Okay, back to the positivity that is Cubs baseball in October.
  16. Ken Rosenthal weighs in with why A-Rod won't be a Cub next season:
  17. Well, those numbers worked for Sammy for a few years before the majority of Cubs fans turned on him. He also had a shoddy reputation as a team player for the bulk of his time. I have a hard time believing that A-Rod would get such preferential treatment by putting up those numbers. If he brings us a World Series championship though, he'll be Mr. Cub for a whole new generation.
  18. Anyone else having problems getting the VWR in more than one window? I've tried it in Internet Explorer and Firefox to no avail. Do I need to delete my cookies or something to get it to work?
  19. I'm been comparing Pat and Ron from 2003 to this season. Pat seemed a lot more reserved and a little more distant in 2003, knowing that he was potentially making historic calls. Even his division clincher, "Goodbye Houston, hello Atlanta!" had a ring of posterity to it. But this year, he seems much more passionate about each win. Last night's game, "I'm never going to forget this game" statement shows me that he's enjoying each win that much more than 2003. Anyone else picking up on that?
  20. Yup. Thank God. Between Wrigley and Soldier Field, Chicago sucks at keeping grass healthy I remember hearing that the field project was put on hold until the team got new owners. I may be wrong about that, but I don't think I am.
  21. While I'm always worried, I want to send out a vote of thanks to the Mets for giving the Braves something to fight for. While they would need to jumpfrog the Phillies for the division, if the Mets continue their slide, the Braves will see their series with the Brewers as extra-meaningful. All that said, we just need to win games. Worrying about other teams doesn't help what the team needs to do on the field.
  22. When you put it like that, it seems that MLB makes up rules on the fly for determining the post-season. - All-Star game for WS home field advantage - coin flip for one-game playoff - Head-to-head record for division/wild card
  23. Even better in that same article was an email from Cuban to Mariotti: I really hope Cuban buys the Cubs (not only because he'd potentially be a great owner) so that he can unleash on Mariotti the first time he writes an un-complimentary column.
  24. There were a bunch of two-seats available when I bought mine today. I have 2 seats in section 116. I saw about 5 other options with 2 seats available before I settled on these tickets. Maybe the Cubs just don't want me going to the park. I tried looking at every game and I kept getting the same message that there were no matches for my request. Oh well. No harm done. I get to keep money in my pocket.
  25. Too bad there aren't any games with two seats next to each other. I hate going to the game alone. I'd feel Bartman-esque.
