  1. I think most of us on here are "extremely online" types and are far more likely to be aware of the conversations about this than the general population. Like, I bet if I ask my wife about this tonight she'd have no idea, as she's an Instagram/Pinterest type rather than a Twitter/Reddit/Message Board type. That being said, I totally agree that it's obvious this guy knew what he was doing. The sheer effort he went to to make that particular symbol on camera in his limited window of opportunity makes it very unlikely that this came from a place of innocence.
  2. The Cubs' Offense is currently: -1st in Runs per Game -2nd in wRC+ -4th in average -1st in OBP -4th in slugging -1st in Walk Rate -15th in strikeout rate -4th in ISO -4th highest in Groundball Rate (thanks a lot Albert) -6th in BABIP -3rd in HR/FB rate Phenomenal numbers. A tad lucky looking at those last two, but neither number is high enough to be that big of a red flag. For instance last year in the first half the Cubs were running a super high BABIP, which probably somewhat explains the second half crash. The Cubs pitching is: -10th in runs allowed per game -7th in ERA -13th in FIP -4th in xFIP -11th in K rate -27th in BB rate (thanks Yu) -1st (by a decent margin) in groundball rate -12th in BABIP -4th worst in HR/FB rate Good numbers, and that last number indicates they are likely a bit unlucky to boot. Not as sexy as the offense, but clearly they are an above average pitching staff. Basically Super Cubs are back, and if Yu gets his horsefeathers together we'll have to figure out some new name to indicate that they've ascended beyond Super Cubs. Super Cubs Blue or something.
  3. Keith Law has us taking Michael Busch in his first mock. Don't usually love bat-only guys, but with Rizzo's contract nearing its end, Schwarber not really progressing, and the DH seemingly being a lock for the next CBA, I think I'm softening on that stance.
  4. Getting to first now is so big. Would love add another game or three to the lead by the end of this homestand, because mid-May through mid-June looks to be the toughest part of the schedule.
  5. Happ just donged. I hope he's close to ready. He seems to have addressed his swing and miss issues, but it's been paired with an uncharacteristic number of balls on the ground. So hopefully this is a sign he's putting the contact and the power together and can come back up here and be useful again. Then it's time to see if a month or two in Iowa can do anything for Almora.
  6. So...Brad Brach averaged 94.9 on his fastball yesterday. Brach has shown throughout his career that 95 is his sweet spot. He broke out in 2015 when his velocity jumped up there, and then struggled in the first half of last year when he was back down at 93-94 (he clearly doesn't have the command to survive with diminished stuff) With how dependent he is on velo, and how normal it is for guys' velo to be down in April for various reasons, it's not crazy to think he's about ready to work his way back into the circle of trust.
  7. Co-sign. Win tomorrow. Dong the hell out of the AAA team. And we're sitting at 23-12 with an 11-game win streak when the Brewers bring their horsefeathers team into town. The only problem with this plan is it assumes tonight's Mets-Brewers game will have actually ended by then.

  9. Quintana is going to shove on Sunday night and neither Cardinal starter is going to be able to hold the offense down too hard. If Yu pitches well we're sweeping these clowns.
  10. Shewmake and Hoese both sound a lot like Cubs picks, I'm not as sure that Wilson does.
  11. Oh god I forgot those horsefeathering meatballs are going to do this I'm really enjoying the thought of Flaherty, their one good and healthy starter, getting tossed two batters into the game because, Yadi Molina has a trump-Ian level of thin skin.
  12. Roederer hit his first dong. Coming on the heels of this: He's gonna be a good one
  13. Dillon Maples has faced 13 batters, walked 5, struck out 6, and allowed two ground balls. Unhittable gets thrown around far too much, but Maples kind of is. I honestly don't know what the best role is for a guy like him. He's probably 2-3x more likely than a typical reliever to have a disaster outing, but at the same time he's the only guy we have who can do what we just saw (at least until Carl rights the ship). Do you you always warm him up with a buddy, so if he walks the first two guys you can go and pull him right away? Do you use him in crazy high leverage situations, where you're probably already horsefeathered but you want to maximize your chance of escaping unscathed? Or do you use him in situations when you're losing close late; where you want to hold the team where it is but realistically there's not much difference between giving up one run and giving up five?
  14. This is huge with how worn down the bullpen is right now. Hopefully they can get through today with just Lester, Webster, and Chatwood.
  15. Thank God [tweet] [/tweet]
  16. King Felix being old and bad even though he's only 33 is super upsetting
  17. I can't see him being released or traded at this point, unfortunately. The team didn't bother bringing in a legitimate backup SS, so I don't imagine that's their plan unless he did some new thing that we don't know about yet. Like, Bote could probably handle a few games here or there at short, but not weeks or months if god forbid Javy were to hit the IL. I think best case is that they option him to Iowa. At that point he'd still be around as insurance, but not on the team. From there we all root for Nico (and Zack Short) to rake and pass Russell on the depth chart before a long term backup SS arises as a need.
  18. Aramis Ademan left the MB game early but thankfully it just looks like it was because he was arguing with an umpire and not an injury or anything
  19. It's funny, the 2016 and 2017 drafts are to my eye contributing comparable amounts of prospect capital to the system right now. The team didn't pick until #104 in 2016, so the draft haul looks extremely impressive given the circumstances. For 2017...well the middle rounds still look promising?
  20. I'm curious how aggressive they're going to be with Ademan. I could see them moving him up soon since he already had a full year at A+, but at the same time I wouldn't mind letting him dominate for a while and wait 'til after the draft to move him up. With Ademan, Amaya, and Hoerner all off to such good starts, the top of the Cubs' prospect list actually looks decent for the first time since the Quintana trade.
  21. I thought last year that David Bote was going to be our deluxe version Jeff Baker, and was perfectly happy with that. Now I'm beginning to wonder if we lucked into some sort of B+ Justin Turner clone (complete with hideous beard). Bote has more juice in the glove, though even in the rosiest scenarios isn't going to be quite there with the bat.
