  1. Good News/Bad News I guess. While Velazquez has hardly been amazing, he's been solid given his age. Similar deal to Morel and Roederer. Really excited to see what Davis can do though, I liked that pick a lot last year.
  2. They have 11 blown saves, which is tops in the league. That number is obviously not 1 to 1, as they had two blown saves just yesterday. Looking at win probability added, they're 20th in the league. If you look at FG's Meltdowns statistic, which is basically blown saves without all the arbitrary rules about what is a save opportunity, they're tied for 8th most in the league. On the whole, the pen's been more mediocre than bad. They had the nightmare week to open the season, and they've had a nightmare past ~10 days, and in between they were pretty fantastic. With how gassed the pen is right now though, and with only 1 off day the next few weeks, I'd guess this current bad stretch is going to last a bit longer and drag those numbers down more. I imagine we see two relievers brought in this summer. A brand name closer around the deadline and someone akin to Jesse Chavez (where they think they've found a hidden gem) in the next month or so.
  3. Don't like this, would much rather give Norwood am extended shot than bring back Maples right now.
  4. This is where I'm at too. "The Core" is 2.5 years from FA. If a guy has an ETA of 2019 or 2020 I don't think he's going anywhere. They're going to want to start folding these guys in so A) the team doesn't totally collapse in 2022 because literally everyone is a FA and B) they have an idea of how many guys they can afford to extend. That being said, even though many would consider him our top prospect I think Amaya has a good chance of being shipped off. Willson has an extra year of team control, and also might be the easiest guy to extend. I could also see a one of Almora/Bote/Caratini/Happ getting sent off. At this point they're clearly the second tier, it might make sense to trade one for pitching and then backfill that role with a vet. Caratini especially might be a real sell high opportunity given the dearth of offense at C currently.
  5. I'm gonna guess another reliever because the pen is gassed and then either Happ or Zobrist in 2-3 days.
  6. BA too. Would like to get that type of power in the system With the track record of this front office on college hitters, I’d be very excited if they felt like they should draft Hoese. It’ll be very interesting next weekend when the mocks firm up a bit and guys like Callis and Kiley can give a better idea of who is connected to whom. Yeah that's the thing for me too. Hoese's age and lack of production prior to this year are pretty big red flags. *But* he's producing like a top 5 pick this year and has the raw power to back it up. If this FO takes him I'm a hell of a lot more likely to think he's a late bloomer rather than someone destined to be a AAAA player. Also, to Raisin's point, we NEED power in the system in the worst way. Even our vaguely interesting corner bats like Jared Young aren't really big time power guys.
  7. That was an absolute mammoth shot from Rizzo. Hot Damn
  8. I kind of wonder if they're giving Vic two days in a row. because we're in the middle of this 33 games in 34 days stretch and they want Willson to get an extended breather.
  9. Mayo has us taking Hoese in his newest mock. I don't know if it's a good or bad idea, but I think he's the most interesting guy I've seen us associated with.
  10. It was his first great night at the plate in a while. Has been striking out a ton lately. Numbers still are bad in a super hitter friendly league with super juiced baseballs Yeah. Great sign but especially since Almora is finally hitting they fan be patient. Wait until he proves he belongs again.
  11. And Monday currently lines up as Cole Hamels vs Gerrit Cole
  12. Javy looks good. That being said the second Kyle loses the no no I'd still pull Javy out of there.
  13. With a pitcher running pretty much anything that doesn't get past him is gonna be an out.
  14. Pair of Fun Facts for your Cardinals schadenfreude as we pass the quarter pole of the season: Luke Weaver: 1.3 fWAR Carson Kelly: 0.5 WAR Paul Goldschmidt: 0.9 fWAR Kyle Hendricks: 1.4 fWAR Jon Lester: 1.2 fWAR Cole Hamels: 0.9 fWAR Jose Quintana: 0.9 fWAR Cardinal's entire pitching staff: 1.1 fWAR Also, it's hard to fun fact-ify it, but guaranteeing $253.5 million in additional dollars to Goldschmidt, Carpenter, and Mikolas this spring looks pretty bad right now.
  15. Ummm, has anyone else noticed that the Cardinals are in fourth place?
  16. Today has been some of the worst control Cole has had as a Cub, and his stuff was down a bit too IMO. Pretty badass outing considering it was like a D+ night for him in terms of having "it."
  17. Last year Lester was really interesting. If you break his season into fourths, it almost perfectly breaks out like this: Part 1: Bad and Lucky Part 2: Kinda good and Lucky Part 3: Very Bad and Unlucky Part 4: Very good and slightly lucky During part 4, there were some encouraging signs because IIRC he basically started throwing a lot more soft stuff and found success. I was worried about him coming into this year though, but it looks like he's found the formula for pitching at 88-91.
  18. This is really really great
  19. I believe I read a fluff piece a few weeks back that said he's taken very well to all the reporting and analytics the Cubs produce. So he's probably gotten better at tunneling, keeping his release point consistent, found a good new grip on one of his secondaries, or something else in that vein.
  20. Cubs starters to this point have been worth 3.4 WAR according to Fangraphs. Cubs starters were worth 3.5 WAR at the All Star Break last year.
  21. Yeah. I think a guy close to the mic was a particularly loud boo-er and that probably tilts our perception from home, but still pleasantly surprising overall.
