  1. Matt Miller at ESPN had Scott at #57, Dan Brugler at the Athletic had him at 48. Seems like pretty great value
  2. Yeah my ideal would be to grab a C in the pick coming up in a few minutes here and then do exactly this. Maybe add TE to the list too.
  3. Yeah Edge is actually the one place in FA with some talent left before cuts happen during camp. Clowney, Frank Clark, Justin Houston, Melvin Ingram, and old friend Leonard Floyd. All older at this point but you'd feel good about them for this season at least. Address edge in FA next week, add a plug and play C, the aforementioned Luke Wypler seems right up Poles' alley (see below), and you've got more or less a complete team.
  4. That sucks. Rucker was looking good for a bit last year and wilted when he started getting harder opportunities. He might just not have the stones. These are the things you've gotta find out early in the year.
  5. Whether or not it works, really like Ross giving Rucker this opportunity
  6. A little bit. Rosenthal had an article this AM and had some remarks from Hosmer about how he'd be cool sliding into the veteran mentor role after Mervis gets called up. Definitely feels like the conversations are happening.
  7. Luzardo is the goods, so tonight will be tough. I kind of love the lineup against lefties now though so hopefully they can still pull this out. Especially with Kilian going tomorrow.
  8. This seems right
  9. Among other notes, Sharma days there's optimism that Taillon only misses the minimum 15 days
  10. I don't know about criminal, but yeah if we take a skill guy I'd rather have Bijan.
  11. Worrying about Wisdom feels like finding a $20 bill in your coat pocket and being disappointed it's not a $50. If you told me coming into the season that we'd get '22 Wisdom’s bat and '21 Wisdom’s glove I'd have been ecstatic. The fact that his offense appears to be improved a little bit from last year too? He'll have some slumps but given the full picture take them and don't ask questions IMO. The pen is interesting, and almost the opposite of the last few years. I like every reliever we have down there except Boxberger (and I don't completely hate him). But Alzolay and Hughes are probably the only guys I trust in a tight and close game right this moment? Fulmer can get back there pretty quickly, but right now it's just two dudes and the last week has featured several tight games against good offenses. It's exposed the cracks in the unit. Ross is dipping his toe into the water of giving Rucker high leverage work, and I'd like to see that continue to escalate. And Merryweather and Estrada don't need to be relegated to pure mopup work either.
  12. Re: Caissies strikeouts, I think it's more of a deep counts issue than a swing and miss issue. Entering today, of the 229 qualified hitters at AA, he's 38th highest in terms of swing and miss, but he's also 24th highest in terms of pitches per plate appearance (4.45). He's still gotta clean up the contact for sure, but it's probably not as egregious a problem as his 50% K rate would tell you.
  13. As much as it sucks for them, it is probably good for the game on a macro level that a full teardown failed so much. The Phillies too, they were in a worse course until Dombrowski pulled them out of it (which partially involved opening the checkbook wider). I'll be interested to see how thoroughly the Sox tear it down this summer. I'd probably move Cease, Moncada, Giolito, Lynn, and some relievers. Do they have the stones to do all of that in one fell swoop? Also let's start speaking into existence now Jed bringing Cease home.
  14. This is great, I've been wondering about Smyly's "Sinker" for a while, because it doesn't seem very sinker-y visually and sinker/curveball is very much against the current orthodoxy. I'm curious how much of his contact management ability is real. Going back to the start of '21 he's got a 3.94 ERA with a 4.59 FIP. This year Statcast thinks that gap is earned but the prior two years was less convinced. The other thing is his ability to work a the 3rd time through the order. He was mostly 5 and dive last year, though performed pretty well when asked to go a little deeper. This year his TTO splits are really bad, but I think that's really just the game against Cincy? He did fine both times against the Dodgers, and like you mentioned the fact that he faced them back-to-back would seemingly impact him in a similar way. Peripherally Smyly's a very generic 4th or 5th starter. But if he can more regularly go 6 and/or if the FIP beating powers are real the profile suddenly looks a lot more attractive.
  15. FUNNY YOU SHOULD ASK! "whatever the problem is"
  16. Yan Gomes is now hitting .309/.316/.582 on the season, and pitchers have an ERA under 3 when he's catching
  17. Curious who gets the 8th with Fulmer struggling right now. Does Ross give Rucker his shot at setup duty? Then close it with Hughes since the bottom half of the Padres order is pretty vulnerable to a lefty?
  18. Owen Caissie now batting 3rd for Tenn. Hernandez and Ballesteros batting 2nd and 3rd for Myrtle. Cool little acknowledgment for these guys who are among the younger players in their respective leagues and off to hot starts.
  19. We're now approaching a full calendar year of Steele being really horsefeathering good. And honestly it feels like he's still getting better?
  20. Soft confirmation that Kilian is the starter for the MLB club on Saturday
  21. Brown's probably only good for ~130 innings this year regardless. So I think coming up in relief in August is probably good from both a development and an MLB-need standpoint
  22. Hopefully Nelly hits and this weekend and never looks back so that when Bellinger comes back Torrens gets the axe.
