  1. I thought this was the reason this thread was started to chastise Hendry & MacPhail, not because Hendry was upset because Sullivan misquoted Jones.
  2. Its been said that a position is only as good as the guy available to take the starter's place, or something to that effect. Sure would have been nice to have someone like Sweeney or M. Stairs to fill in for Lee when he went down. Not that either of them are equal to D. Lee but that either would have been a better replacement than what the Cubs have.
  3. What did it say? Cubs have organizational philosophy about not being patient at the plate, and not placing value on guys w/high OBP
  4. What'd it say? I talked about the Cubs not being patient at the plate and it being an organizational philosophy to be aggressive and not place value on guys with high OBP
  5. Santo just read an email I sent on behalf of NSBB. They are supposed to follow up on it after the break.
  6. But Vance, if you give them Pie, who is the Cubs CF for the next generation? Please don't say JP.
  7. Or Ray Tanner. He has done an excellent job as skipper of the USC Gamecocks.
  8. I'd be really surprised (but pleased) if dusty gets canned. With all the love Hendry has showed for Baker publically, I think he would give Dusty the option to "retire" just so Dusty can save face.
  9. Shouldn't that be "Gillooly" Bonds? 8)
  10. I'd consider that package, but the Phillies have no need of Walker. They'd probably want Williams. I'm not sure I'd trade Williamson, Murton, and Williams for Burrell considering Burrell's salary. And while I see Philly as a team that might be looking for a closer, they currently are paying a boatload of money to newly signed Tom Gordon to be just that. My guess is that Philly isn't in the market for a closer until Gordon has proven he can't do the job. My guess is, even if he looks bad this spring, Philly will let him have the job for a month or so before trying to pull the plug on him. Do the Phillies have a decent set up man for Gordon? If not, Williamson would fit that roll nicely and be the back up closer if Gordon falters.
  11. Would anyone do a package like Williamson, Walker, and Murton for Pat Burrell?
  12. And since insurance companies stopped insuring most, if not all, contracts longer than 3 years.
  13. A run at the division title. Many here have said Cinci has a good to great lineup (with Dunn in it) but what it lacks is pitching. If the new GM somehow finds a way to acquire some decent pitching, perhaps that will show Dunn a commitment to winning which might make him stay around. Just a thought.
  14. But if the new management shows a commitment to righting the ship, that might persuade Dunn to stick around. If not, then I totally agree that the smart thing to do is trade Dunn now and get as much future talent for him as possible. [/i]
  15. That's exactly why Prior might sign a long term deal now and give up his first year of FA. If he gambles on staying healthy and having a good 2006, then his gamble pays off with a nice fat arby contract in 2007. But if he has a bad to mediocre 2006 or if he goes down with a season ending injury, his 2007 arby contract will not be so nice. Taking the long term deal now guarantees him $$ for the next 3-4 years regardless of performance/health.
  16. Really makes you wonder why every team took a pass on him during the waiver process
  17. The Cubs' strength is the starting rotation. Any deal to trade one of the current starters better be after they acquire another starter to replace the outgoing one.
  18. When is Prior eligible for FAgency? I believe it might be after the 2006 season. If the Cubs could lose him via FAgency, then looking to deal him now while his value is so high might be a wise move. But the Cubs have to get a proven pitcher in the deal.
  19. Eric, I remember you from posting over at Cubs.com before the creation of NSBB. I understood the intent of your comment/opinion and, for what it's worth, was not offended by it.
  20. I'm bumping this thread and maybe the mods can make it a sticky to post those players non-tendered. Mods?
  21. They become free agents. If we do tender them, they are guaranteed contracts. If the team can't work out a deal by a certain date, an arbitrator decides between 2 figures(one submitted by the team, one by the player) for a one year deal. To add to this explanation, tendering an actual contract/offer to the player is what kicks in the tendering. But the contract cannot be for less than 80% of what the player made the previous season, IIRC.
  22. Any chance Jones can actually be a better hitter in Wrigley than he was in Minn.? Is Minn. a hitters or pitchers park?
  23. I'm aware of him becoming a FA if he is non-tendered BH05. I thought, incorrectly, that the Brewers can resign Kolb for any amount the two can agree on before Dec. 20 and thereby avoid arby. However, they can only sign him before the 20th if the offer they make is not less than a certain percentage of last year's salary. But if he becomes a FA, then they can sign him for any amount. Makes sense now.
