  1. This doesn't make sense. Kolb does not "have to" be non-tendered just so the Brewers can sign him to a lower contract. The Brewers can resign him before the 20th to a lower rate than his 2005 contract. If he is non-tendered, he is free to negotiate with any team, including the Brewers, but that puts Kolb in a better bargaining position.
  2. The As have not signed him since trading for him. Certainly makes one wonder if they don't sign him today, will they take a chance on what he might get by offering him arby?
  3. Hey Jehr. The As have only a few more days to do something with Milton or he will become a FA. Interesting......
  4. When Bradley was traded to the As, he was not under contract with the Dodgers. Any word from the California contingent on whether or not Oakland is trying to sign him to a new deal before the Dec. 20th deadline or offer him arby?
  5. This is just speculation but I do think Hendry had inside info that Giles would not leave SD/the west coast at any cost. I base my specualtiuon on the following: In the end, how many teams actually offered Giles a deal? Not many, IIRC. And how many of those offers beat the one he took from SD? Most, if not all, again IIRC. Although Hendry did seem to put all of his focus into signing Furcal, I also believe resigning Neifi was his fall-back in case Furcal went elsewhere. Not saying it was a good fall-back, just that Hendry did not count his Furcal chickens before they hatched. We are hearing there are two trade offers on the table right now from Jim that possibly involve getting a RF. I'm still trying to stay positive that JH won't dissappoint us before the season starts.
  6. Thats LHP Luis Gonzalez from Colorado. :)
  7. Would ya'll be happy with Gonzalez as the Cubs RF in 2006, as opposed to Jones or some of the other options that have been batted around?
  8. And end up with you know who playing 2nd if Walker is moved in another deal.
  9. Hey Glass. Long time no see posting. The scuttlebut I heard is that Tejada and Hernandez don't get along and the trade demand talks came after the Os signed Hernandez.
  10. Actually he said he may benefit from a change of scenery. Perhaps his alleged about face has something to do with the rule about trading a FA in the middle of a big contract. IIRC, if the O's trade him, he can request a trade the year following that trade and if his request is denied he can elect to void the remainder of his contract and become a FA. But if the O's trade him because he demands a trade, then perhaps his right to request a trade the subsequent season or become a FA goes by the wayside. Any of you rules gurus know anything about this?
  11. What really does not make sense is that by his own words, Rogers says pitching is a precious commodity yet he suggests the Cubs should trade away one of its best pitchers and then try and sign a FA pitcher.
  12. I think it is safe to say that no one who posts on this board, including Hoops and Bruce Miles, has the precise inside information as to why or why not the Cubs/Hendry appeared to show no interest at all in Giles. We fans don't know exactly what goes on behind the scenes/what goes on beyond what is reported in the media. We do know that several teams have been showing interest in Furcal, we know the perameters his agent has set, we know some teams Furcal might be interested in going to/staying with, yet it was recently reported that no team has made a formal offer yet. Using that as an example, can we assume/speculate that Hendry early on made an inquiry into whether Giles might be willing to move to the midwest and for a reasonable sum and contract length? Is it reasonable to assume Hendry's underlings had enough inside info that lead Hendry to conclude pursuing Giles at any price was a waste of time? We can get mad at Hendry and the Cubs for not even trying to get Giles but the reality is we will probably never know what, if anything, Hendry/the Cubs did behind the scenes that kept them away from any public display of affection for Giles.
  13. That would be Kizer Solesay, IIRC
  14. No he wasn't signed to be the closer, but Dusty didn't hesitate to pull the trigger when JoBo went down. Dempster proved himself worthy of another season as the full-time closer w/o thinking of pulling him for Eyre (or Howry) .. unless Dempster implodes, which I don't forsee happening. I believe Hawkins' contract also paid him bonuses for games closed so it must have been contemplated when he was signed that he would close some games.
  15. Problem with that argument Don is that if Hendry lets the Phillies know he is not even remotely interested in Giles (as an alternative to a trade for Abreu) and then he gets into negotiations for Abreu, Hendry's bargaining position goes way down. It's always good to let the other side know you at least have a fallback plan if they start asking for too much.
  16. Hoops, is this just speculation on your part or is this what you are hearing from your usual sources??
  17. These "rumors" seem like nothing more than that.
  18. Give them an apple one, make it ala mode, and call it a day :D
  19. I've already stated that I don't like Neifi being re-signed however, doing so has given the Cubs many options not only now but later in the season. We all know how easily middle infielders go down and every year there are teams looking for a ss/2b by mid season and certainly by the trade deadline. I can see Neifi being used as a viable trade chip later on.
  20. The evidence is starting to mount that Hendry is pursuing Pierre in addition to Furcal, and if this is true and talks are serious, I can see Juan being acquired before Furcal thus giving the Cubs a leadoff hitter w/o Furcal. With Cedeno and Neifi already here that may make acquiring Furcal less urgent and may cause Hendry to shift his attention more toward the RF hole.
  21. I despise this move as much as most on this board but I'm holding out hope that there is an alterior motive behind this signing, like helping to bring Furcal here and/or Cedeno being a part of a package that is going to net the Cubs a premier corner OF (crosses fingers).
