  1. I said the difference between a .330obp and a .360obp is not significant because a .333obp means the guy gets on base 3 out of 10 times at bat. To get to 4 out of every 10 times at bat, the guy needs an obp of .400. An obp of .365 means you are getting on base 3.5 times out of every 10 at bats. Is it "better", sure it is. Is it "significantly" better? That depends on your definition of significant.
  2. On the Cubs.com site, it has JP current obp as .330 for the season. Ichiro's obp is .360. I'm not advocating JP over Ichiro, just pointing out that even tho Ichiro's obp is .30% points higher, that is not a significant difference.
  3. Chris: I might be able to be talked into going now that Nefie is gone. I'm just 4 hours from Atl and I have friends there too. Paul
  4. If the Cubs are the team that claimed him, the players who the Cubs place on waivers/offer in trade for Jones have to get past only the Pirates and the Nats. The Braves are next in line. So it does seem that the Cubs are a logical partner in this case.
  5. The Cubs would have to put Blanco on waivers, and he would probably get claimed before he reached Boston's turn.
  6. Problem with that logic is that the player/players the Cubs want to send to Washington for Soriano also have to clear waivers and have to get past all the teams at the bottom before they get to Washington's place in the standings
  7. If the Cubs were in contention then I would agree with yanking Dempster at that point. But the Cubs are out of it so Demp should have been left in to finish it.
  8. Firing Dusty now sends a message the organization will not accept failure; Firing Dusty now and acknowledging the remainder of this season is to prepare for 2007 and beyond is being realistic and is the wisest move to make; Firing Dusty now is the best thing JH can do to show us fans that he may really have some baseball sense left.
  9. Soriano is also a FA, but he'll probably move back to the IF next year. Just because these guys are FAs after this season does not mean they will sign with the Cubs. The Cubs have a less than stellar history of getting good hitting position players to sign as FAs regardless of the amount of money they have to spend on signing FAs.
  10. How bout this instead, one of our decent prospects and a reliever? 8)
  11. Couple of problems I see with the writer's suggestions: 1. He says trade Prior to SD for a power corner OF but he doesn't say who. Does SD even have such a player worthy of trading for Prior whose name is not Brian Giles; 2. He's assuming FAs like Zito will want to sign with the Cubs. With the way things are going with this organization, I'm not sure there will be too many FA's begging to play for the Cubs in the near future; 3. Trading a pitcher with a very high upside is very risky unless you already have good reason to know he can and will be replaced easily.
  12. Wait didn't Cedeno go 20+ games in a row until that error last night? Oh and in 47 games Neifi has 6 errors, while in 72 games Cedeno has 12. Neifi is not that much better than Cedeno. Are those 6 errors all at SS? Also, isn't the concensus on this board that the season is lost anyway so we should be playing the kids as much as possible so they get better?
  13. I highly doubt Dusty would allow Hendry or any of the higher ups to dictate what he does on the field. He does not seem like the type that would bow to pressures from the GM regarding who plays when and where. BTW Gus, when did you attend SIU? I was there from 77-81.
  14. The one article also talks about the DRays getting rid of Huff for whatever they can get. So perhaps a deal that includes taking Huff off the DRays' hands might get it done. Perhaps Crawford and Huff for Marshall, Williams/Ardsma, and Murton. Or is that too much?
  15. Awesome article Bruce. Right on the money. I wonder if JH knows how to read?
  16. In theory, it'd be a good offer, but another team would trump it if ARod was on the block. If he ever gets traded, the team that gets him will vastly overpay. The Cubs suckiness this year has created a PR nightmare for Hendry and company. Since Hendry refuses to dump dusty, which many fans want to see and which might result in JH saving some face, I can see Hendry making a big move like acquiring A-Rod to get him back into the fans' good graces, at least some of the fans. Who is playing CF for the Yanks right now? Any chance the Cubs can convince the Yanks to take JP? If so, I'd do Wood, Aram, and JP and if necessary Hill. Move JJ to center and get Wilson or bring up Pie and leave JJ in right.
  17. That's a very interesting question Serena. But I speculate the players asso. would balk at such a clause in every players' contract.
  18. per blurb on cubs.com
  19. Acquiring Nevin improves the chances that one will be needed? They've needed a difference making bat for years now, I don't see how Nevin's arrival affects that fact at all. I think the argument is that it helps them get back into a place record wise where a difference making bat can....well...make a difference. But that's just my interpretation of that. My interpretation is that Nevin, in all probability, will not help the team much so the team will still need a difference maker this season.
  20. MMike, if Bob said the entire pitching staff thinks Rothchild is a joke, especially Maddux, one would think Hendry would know this and Rothchild would be long gone. Any speculatoin by Bob why he is still the PC?
  21. Instead of Hendry being "fired", perhaps the Trib can just "reassign" him to another position in the organization.
  22. They were also talking last night on BBTN about the Angels. Their situation looks very similar to the Cubs', a mixture of young and older guys, one key vet (Vlad) carrying the team, very low emphasis on obp, batters not taking enough pitches/working the count, few walks, etc.
