There's no need to sign anyone for the bullpen. If they trade something of value for Brett Gardner when they have Fuld in the system, I quit. I think they need to stand pat in CF and relief unless something great comes along. And I'm ok with Jeff Baker at 2nd until Castro moves Theriot over there.
I don't think you are correct about what Theo values. Bill James was on WGN radio a few weeks ago and said while the Boston front office doesn't value stats like RBIs, they do take into consideration the player's personality. He said they would not have been interested in Bradley. Interestingly enough though, he told Kaplan if the Cubs don't want Zambrano to give the Red Sox a call. I think Kaplan was shocked by this because it came at a time when he was saying Zambrano isn't a good pitcher because he only won 9 games in 2009. I really think Theo just likes to advertise that he doesn't subscribe to conventional wisdom to evaluate baseball players.
I acknowledge Jeff Baker's existence, however, I was thinking that since 2B is Theriot's eventual destination, maybe Lou would want to start him there instead of moving him midseason, when Castro is most likely to force the move.
What about Blanco breaking camp at SS with a Theriot/Fontenot platoon at 2B? Once we feel we can't handle Blanco's nothing production at SS, we bring up Castro assuming he's making further strides at Tenn/Iowa?
I don't really care about Vitters because he hasn't done crap outside of one hot month as a pro. Doesn't look at all like he's going to be a solid replacement at 3B for when Ramirez leaves. I can see that, especially because there are concerns he'll be able to stick at 3B defensively. The real question is this, though - do you think his perceived value is higher than his value to our club as it stands now? I'm honestly not sure, but I'm leaning toward "no."
