  1. Yet another reason to dump Hendry before he does further harm. We know JH will make moves like this, at least bring in someone else who might not be so stupid...I'll take my chances w/ a new guy
  2. That's what my gut tells me. But otoh, there's no guarantee Castro becomes what we think he will become. Granderson is an established commodity, a good bat at a defense first position, which also happens to be a position of relative need. I would go for the bird in hand, but it could be all those years of our top prospects tanking. If I did cough him up, they wouldn't get much more. Maybe Castro/Fox/Marshall. That's my feeling as well. As mentioned above, I wouldn't want to move Castro, but since HJ Lee is in the system, I could stomach it.
  3. It still bothers me that when they drafted him, they made a point to say he was not a leadoff hitter, but a middle of the order guy with some pop. And then they allowed the freaking coaching staff to try and turn him into a slappy leadoff hitter. Absolutely ridiculous. Interesting story I've heard on Corey's development... MacPhail wanted to draft a college player in that spot that could reach the majors faster, but Hendry was enamored with Patterson. So he promised that Corey was such a special HS talent that would be in the majors very shortly after he was drafted. Then Corey backs it up with a huge first year at Lansing. After that, he was rushed through the org in order to fulfill the promise that was made in the draft room. I can't be 100% certain of the story, but I trust the source an awful lot. Ahhh, that Hendry & his salesmanship... Rushing a prospect to save face...CYA at its finest
  4. [shrug] I still like Bradley as a baseball player. I don't plan to invite him to dinner w/ me & my gf, so his eccentricities don't matter to me. I also don't mind him calling out the fans, sometimes it is deserved. It's a shame the Cubs will likely have to endure 2010 w/ a lesser RF'er.
  5. Man, I wish Theo had a hankering for ivy, Old Style & deep dish pizza
  6. Jim Hendry: the gift that keeps on giving....because he's allowed to.
  7. If the new guy doesn't have any money to work with, how does Hendry have any money to work with? If it effectively comes down to that the only significant moves the Cubs can make are trades until the payroll can be expanded or contracts come off the table I'd rather just keep Hendry since trades have been the one thing he's largely tolerable to really good at getting done. Once the money situation is more workable go ahead and fire him, but until then it seems largely redundant. I'm not trying to get in the middle of a conversation, and I typically hate "addition by subtraction" & "slippery slope" arguments.... However, with that said, I see illiniguy's POV. I liken it to an argument I had w/ a buddy during Dusty's last year. Everyone knew he would be done. My opinion was that he should've been canned in-season. My buddy argued, "Why? What difference would it make?" Well, we saw the typical Dusty shenanigans; he wouldn't play the young guys, kept mis-using pitchers, etc. Keeping guys like Dusty/Hendry around absolutely could have a detrimental effect on the future. Allowing them to stay gives them more opportunity to make bad decisions. I'd rather take a chance on a new guy
  8. ^^ Vitters' perceived value just keeps sliding, doesn't it?
  9. Yeah, but doing so when you're 20 yrs old is nothing to crow about
  10. the park certainly helped, but he was still really good. he's shown he can get hot and putu p big numbers. the problem is, most years he doesn't get that hot. also, iirc milton had a ridiculous babip last season I do think there is something to the whole "contract year" phenomenon. Not just with Milton, but with tons of other guys as well. There is not. Yeah, wouldn't believing in that "phenomenon" be akin to believing in "clutch"?
  11. Because he's not good? And yes he not the biggest issue with the team currently but he's still the same guy who everyone wanted gone last year and the year before that and it's not like he's gotten markedly better. Hot garbage is...well...still garbage. He's not garbage. He's average. There's nothing wrong with average. Of course there are better options out there, but Theriot isn't someone that I would absolutely want to get rid of in the offseason. If he's gone fine, I hope they replace him with someone decent. If he's still there, I wouldn't mind. Pretty much sums up how I feel about Theriot.
  12. I thought we wanted the Cubs to have a top 15 pick next year.... Go Pirates?
  13. Cue the circus music for this series...
  14. I love me some Milton...sure, his horrid start was difficult to watch, but I hope he is not traded this off-season.
  15. Bat him lead-off the rest of the way...regression is clearly in order
  16. I also ASSUMED the assessment of his defense might be based solely on his error rate. Since they didn't go into detail of their conclusion, suppose we'll just have to guess. In any event, I'm with pretty much everyone else--I am very excited to see him progressing so quickly. Once he develops physically, we could have a very nice middle IF in any event.
  17. Free J. Jax!!!!!
  18. that's different from the first part of '09 why? Sorry. Didn't mean to imply the minors are worthy of attention only towards the end of the season... It's just that for many of us, there wasn't much to be excited about in the system until some of the kids showed significant promise this year.
  19. Guess the minor league forum is the place to be the rest of '09...
  20. It's interesting, what do they expect? Last year they had much better starting pitching. This year it's as bad as the Cubs have become without Lilly and Z. Macha's no miracle worker, but who is? They gave Yost the world at the trade deadline last year, and he eeked out a playoff berth. They gave Macha nothing, so now he's fired (potentially). I mean, it's his first year. Just seems really strange to me. I wonder if this is more about wanting a manager who will yell and scream more. Macha's very reserved. If the last part is correct, doesn't seem Randolph would be their guy then, unless my impression of him is way off. Wonder who else they'd be looking at.
  21. Come on Cubs, time to beat the hell out of somebody
  22. The same Davey Johnson that sucked during the world baseball classic? Ugh. Sample size.......... :D
