  1. Why do you want them to win? Their chances of making the playoffs are just a little better than 1 in 400 at this point. Cubs management says it's too early to throw in the towel when they should be thinking about how to make this team better next year and the near future. This season is already a lost cause. It's not pessimism. It's realism. Check the simulations: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/statistics/ps_odds.php http://www.coolstandings.com/baseball_standings.asp?i=1 http://www.baseballprospectus.com/statistics/ps_oddspec.php Personally, I am rooting for them to lose right now, and I'm not ashamed to say it. We will not win as long as the current management stays in place. If the Cubs start winning some games now, they might finish in fourth or fifth place. If that's good enough for you, then I'm glad you're not the GM. Well then your not a cub fan if you are "rooting" for them to lose. That does not make any sense. Yeah its a tuff time to watch them play, but that being said I will NEVER root for them to lose. It may be different with football, but I'm a Raiders fan and, once I realized the season was lost, I rooted for them to lose because I wanted them to get a higher draft pick. That doesn't mean that I'm not a Raiders fan. People do this all the time. I did that with the Packers this year. It wasn't fun and I don't want to do it again. The situations are different though because in football, your whole franchise can change with the addition of one player in the draft. In baseball, it takes much more than one guy to change around a franchise and the draft in baseball is much more hit or miss than the NFL draft. But in both cases you are still pulling for the team to lose so something good ultimately happens. In football you want that one good draft pick that can change your franchise so you might pull for the team to lose to attain that. With the Cubs this year many people want the team to lose because they feel the organization needs some drastic changes that wouldn't happen if the team finishes with a record like in 2005.

If that's good enough for you, then I'm glad you're not the GM. Nothing gets changed with this team if we have a season like last year. Management will blame the bad start on injuries, say that the team performed much better when everybody came back, and claim that the team would have been even better if the injuries wouldn't have happened. Then they won't change anything. There are numerous problems with this team that need to be addressed and without a horrible season I don't think they will be.
  4. Thank you for joining us Fred. Now I finally get a play by play that's not a gamecast.
  5. I feel your pain. I started a thread in rants about how gay FOX is. Wouldn't you think that MLB.TV would sit back and say "hey, we're not broadcasting any 10:00 baseball game in Northern California, maybe we should let them watch the game on their computer." But of course that's not the case.
  6. This sucks. The game is supposed to be on FOX, but the Saturday game on FOX out here on the west coast doesn't start until 1. I have MLB.TV and I can't watch the game because of blackout restrictions even though the game ISN'T ON TV HERE. This sucks.
  7. The problem wasn't that the Cubs hit too many home runs; it was that the Cubs hit too many solo home runs. Better OBP means those solo home runs suddenly turn into two and three run home runs. I know other people, not necessarily on this board, talked about the Cubs hitting too many home runs. The problem boils down to the emphasis, or lack thereof, on OBP within the organization.
  8. I was in a computer lab the other day finishing some work with one of my friends and I was telling her how much the Cubs suck. She didn't fully grasp so I brought up the Cubs schedule on espn.com and told her "red means a loss and blue means a win." She looked at the schedule and instantly said "Wow, they're pathetic." Yup.
  9. I'm assuming the US showed an improvement over their horrid performance against Morocco on Tuesday because they actually won, but how much of an improvement was it?
  10. It can't be any worse than Carrie Muskat's Q & A. At least Sullivan didnt refer to Jacque Jones as our new RH hitting RF... Muskat actually said that? Wow.
  11. What happens with the player's salary when he gets DFA? Does the team still have to pay him for the year. Also, if another team picks the player up, who pays the salary. Let's just say the Cubs decided to DFA Neifi Perez and the Royals pick him up. What happens to the remainder of his contract?
  12. Just registered my team for the fantasy league. I just have one question: we can switch the lineup daily depending on which teams are playing on a certain day correct?
  13. Also, for those of you that read Moneyball, Jeremy Brown is now on the Sacramento RiverCats. Here's his line: 92 AB, .304/.383/.543, 6 HR, 15 RBI, 13 BB, 21 K
  14. ? Hill had 70 pitches through 3 innings and 87 through 5 innings. right. and that's bad how...? you sound so disappointed that hill was getting guys out early in the count for an inning or two. My point was that when the River Cats were working the count they got to Rich Hill, hence the 70 pitches in the first 3 innings and 4 runs. When they swung at pitches early in the count, they didn't do anything, 17 pitches combined in innings 4 and 5 and 0 innings. Then in the sixth he threw 23 pitches in 2/3 of an inning and gave up 2 runs. Working the count led to scoring runs. I'm saying that Rich Hill was lucky to have lasted 5 2/3 innings and the Rivercats should have touched him up for more than the six runs.
  15. I think this is a product of the era he played in. Regardless of whether or not you think Sheffield took steroids, the fact remains that this is an offensive era and stats that would guarantee a person to be a first ballot HOFer don't mean as much anymore. I think Sheffield will get in, I just don't think he'll be a first ballot HOFer. When players from this era start becoming eligible for the Hall, it will be interesting to see how the votes go.
  16. The Cubs starter for Sunday is still listed as TBA on Cubs.com. http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/probable_pitchers.jsp?c_id=chc
  17. Zito is not worth the money he's going to command in the offseason. I would stay away from him at all costs. Well cubs are going to need to sign a FA pitcher this off-season. Who would you want instead? ANother guy I would like the cubs to look at is Kelvim Escabor, but that being said Zito is the best pitcher on the market and he is a former CY young winner so your probably right in the fact he will command alot of $$$$$$$$ And that's the point. I'm going to change my statement from above. If we can get him at a decent price, i.e. under $10 mil a year, then go for it. But he's going to flash that Cy Young award around all winter and will get at least $10 mil. If the Yankees get interested he'll get $12-13.
  18. Zito is not worth the money he's going to command in the offseason. I would stay away from him at all costs. well if we trade Wood, we wouldn't have to pick up his outrageous $13.5 million option. We could use most of that money for Zito. Zito hasn't put together a full good year since his Cy Young in 2002. He hasn't gotten injured, which I guess makes him better than Wood and Prior, but he's alreayd making $7.9 mil this year. He is not worth the $10+ mil per year he's going to get next year.
