  1. Given Giles' is 35 years old, that's a heck of an assumption. Agreed. Giles's power has completely disappeared (.389 SLG this year) and even though he still shows the ability to get on base (.392 OBP) I think Jones is the better option for the next couple years.
  2. Why, you expect the Cubs to even make an offer? Why waste team talking about a player, when you KNOW in your heart the Cubs have no interests in. Meaning even if Ichiro is available, the Cubs ain't interested. Willy Pierre Juan Taverez Makes me no never mind. I expect the Cubs to acquire SOMEBODY else with Taverez to make a deal worthwhile, I would love to take Brandon Backe off their hands. why are you so sure the cubs aren't interested? He's fast, a great defender and bats leadoff - all things the cubs value. How about the fact that Ichiro has a career .377 OBP, and the fact that the Cubs simply don't understand that getting on base is the object of the game. They would view Ichiro as a baseclogging, and instantly deem him "not a good fit." I would love to have Ichiro, but with the current regime, he would be tremendously WASTED. The quote was, "unless you can run, walks just clog up the bases for the guys who can". Not that it matters cause it was a stupid quote, but everyone gets it wrong. Not to mention the fact that Ichiro isn't known as somebody that walks very much. His high OBP is due to him getting hits rather than walks.
  3. Yeah, let's get a guy with less power and less of an ability to get on base than Juan Pierre. Brilliant. If Taveras comes to the Cubs, I guarantee his nickname becomes 6-3.
  4. Like most others in this thread, I really don't see the Cubs as having the slightest chance at Zito. On another note, "so he could sell his music" ? Never heard that as a negotiation point. :) Forgot about the Mets as a potential suitor.
  5. I don't really care about this matchup.
  6. "Voadlkjt foaljea Bwaljsth Saaojable" Ozzy says to vote for Black Sabbath. Which is exactly what I did.
  7. The Raiders won the Super Bowl 10 months before I was born.
  8. Grossman isn't that great of a quarterback. He'll end up being another Florida flop.
  9. "And today it was announced that Sean Marshall has been sent back down to AAA".... "Sean Marshall will now be working out of the bullpen" would be worse. At least in AAA, Marshall would still be getting starts.
  10. Out of curiosity, which stat(s) was this in regards to? Jones being 0-54 when in an 0-2 count. I'm assuming Morgan said there was no way Jones was that bad in a 0-2 count?
  11. But the odds of that happening are slim and none.
  12. Your best case scenario (worst Cubs record) should be 3-12 since hopefully Z will start, and win, 3 of those games. He's already got one in the books.
  13. Absolutely seconded Thirded.
  14. He currently has 108 on the season which puts him on pace for 189 on the year. Dunn holds the record with 195. I think with a little luck, or lack thereof, Dunn can break his own record. Note: This is not intended to be a pro- or anti- Adam Dunn thread but one to watch his rising strikeout totals.
  15. ESPN says he's gotten 1 hit, a double after being down 0-2. He's also hitting .349 in the 6 spot, as opposed to only .260 when batting 7th, and we all know the crazy lefty/righty splits. Another interesting (but small sample size) stat is his .063 BA (1/16) when being up on the count 3-1. Stupid Mets stats! Regardless, his splits are pretty extreme. He has a 189/208/322/530 line when the first pitch of his AB is a strike and is not put in play; when it's a ball, his line is 355/408/618/1026. Basically, he's got twice as good of a chance fo do something productive after a 1-0 count than with an 0-1 count. His numbers when putting the first pitch in play are spectacular, too: 23-39 with 4 HRs, with a line of 590/590/1026/1616. So, when he swings at the first pitch and puts it in play, he's in great shape, but if he misses it or fouls it off, he's screwed. Wow on all of Jacque's splits but especially the bolded part. 1.616 OPS. Wow.
  16. Every so often when my dad is bugging me about the Cubs I'll ask him who the Dodgers got in return for Pedro Martinez. He just shakes his head every time. Not quite the same as 97 years of futility but it usually shuts him up.
  17. 1. Z actually stole second base? Wow. That has to be a highlight of the year. Anybody know if there is video of this somewhere? 2. I make it a point to try to watch all of Z's starts because of how well he is pitching right now. 3. If Z would have got a 2-3 wins in April, he would be at the head of the Cy Young race this year. With 2 wins he's tied for the NL lead and with 3 he has the lead. He also has the seventh best ERA in the NL. Even still, he is on the short list with Glavine, Penny, Webb, and Arroyo. Note: I realize that wins aren't a good stat for realistically evaluating pitchers but in the Cy Young voting that is the #1 criteria that is used which is why I brought that stat up.
  18. If you bring up Bartman in your speech w/o laying the vast majority of the blame on Gonzalez, I will be very, very upset. Agreed. I don't blame Bartman much anymore. Let's just say that hypothetically, Alou doesn't make the catch and nobody interferes. Gonzalez is lucky that Bartman pulled his little incident or he would be known as the guy who killed the Cubs in 2003.
  19. Yes. Playoff appearances since WWII: Red Sox: 1946 1967 1975 1986 1988 1990 1995 1998 1999 2003 2004 2005 Cubs: 1945 1984 1989 1998 2003 I'll gladly take the Red Sox "suffering." Heartbreaks for the Red Sox like 1986 and 2003 are preceded by full seasons of success. World Series Appearances since WWII Red Sox: 1946 1967 1975 1986 2004 Cubs: 1945
  20. Yes. As if 1969, 1984, 1989, 2003 were any easier to take than the ball going thru Buckner's legs?? IMO that was the worst, b/c the Red Sox were 1 strike away. Yeah, the Sox choked often, but really, who in their right mind ever thought of them as a "bad team?" The Red Sox regularly made the playoffs and went to the WS a number of times...they just couldn't seal the deal. But they were still respected as a good and often great team at the end of the day, season after season. The Cubs, on the other hand, have had some flukey good seasons, and that's it. They're not respected at all. They have had respected players...they have a respected stadium. Hell, the scoreboard is more respected than the team itself. The team is a joke, year in and year out, with a few exceptions here or there...not that those exceptions matter, since they faithfully enforce the joke the next year, without fail. Cubs are known as the Lovable Losers. Red Sox were known as the team that couldn't beat the Yankees.
  21. Not exactly a new theory.
  22. I thought there's no way the Sox don't win the division... I'm not a full fledged believer yet but I'm running out of reasons to doubt Detroit. Would a Tigers sweep of the White Sox this week do it?? If the Tigers sweep the White Sox it will make me a believer that the Tigers can win the AL Central. And not just because the Tigers will be 7.5 up on the White Sox after the series. If the Tigers take 2 out of 3 then they're just doing what they are supposed to. I am still waiting for a slump and I still think the White Sox will win the division.
  23. The Red Sox are my favorite AL team, and I am spending more time supporting Red Sox Nation. So you've been rooting for the White Sox to beat the Yankees this weekend? I have to. The Red Sox will pull thru and win the division. Wow, the White Sox basher pulling FOR the White Sox. Anarchy will now ensue.
  24. I'm sure Todd heard the clock ticking before the season started.
