So what’s the purpose of eliminating the away goals rule? As far as I can tell, there’s very little positive benefit. You’re likely to get less exciting 2nd legs because any score that ties the aggregate will lead to extra time rather than just the exact score of the first leg. So if the 1st leg is 1-0 and the second leg is 2-1, in the past, the home team would really have to go for it. Now both teams are going to be more cautious. It’s going to lead to more games going to extra time and therefore more games going to penalties, and anything that leads to more games going to shootouts is a bad thing. If they got rid of the away goals rule if a game goes to extra time, so if both legs end with the same score, that I might be okay with. But I just don’t see any notable positives to this but major negatives.
