  1. I thought he was solid at catcher defensively? He certainly doesn't have the bat for 1B even if he couldn't handle catcher defensively. Any speculation or explanation on this move? Rick was solid defensively as catcher, but Jake Muyco, for instance, was much better than solid defensively, so there may not be room for him in the system any longer as a catcher. However, with Craig and Norwood at first, that move seems equally questionable, so not exactly sure what's up with this. Rick has guys like Soto, Reyes, Richie and Fox are ahead of him with guys like Robinson, Muyco, Reed, Canepa and Mercedes behind him. Apparently he is going to be the odd man out in the catcher situation. In terms of his bat, he had a red hot second half and was batting fifth a lot for Daytona in August. Was there any reported change in his swing that would lead to believe he has turned the corner, or are we hoping he just "got it"and will continue to hit well? He changed his batting stance during the second half, which he attributed to his improvement.
  2. I like Ichiro and all, but I don't like the idea of trading for leadoff hitting CFs in their walk year every offseason. I guess it can replace the annual bullpen acquisition for Hendry.
  3. Should be the death sentence of the pitching coach. He is the one working with the pitchers everyday. He should of noticed this while watching film of Liriano. That is just really poor coaching if you ask me. Gardenhire has the ultimate decision of when or if a guy comes back. He was the one that felt like Liriano was ready. Pitching coach/trainer says if the pitcher is ready. I heard a report about how he felt fine playing catch. Playing catch is different then throwing from the mound at 100% intensity. You are putting so much more stress on your arm at game speed than you are in a controlled situation. He was also fine in his rehab assignment - a 3 inning performance at a AAA playoff game.
  4. Yeesh, Cubs shut out for the bajillionth time this season.
  5. Guzman, Marmol, Marshall and Hill have gotten enough innings to be considered rookies and no longer prospects. Mateo is close to reaching the limit too. In terms of Guzman's performance...this is his first season completely back. He's still rusty and doesn't have the control or command that he had back in 2003. He's been disappointing, but I think his performance next season will be a better gauge.
  6. You really should invest in a paper bag and go to a game.

I have no clue what's up with Matt Craig - two years at AA and then a year at A+ where he was supposed to work on catching but didn't play a single inning at catcher? He seems like he's now just an organizational guy. Next season, I'd guess Hoffpauir/McGehee will play first for Iowa, Dopirak for West Tenn (err, the AA team, wherever it is), Norwood at Daytona and Canzler at Peoria.
  8. Can't believe he blew a big chance to make it big. he has only shown very brief flashes of success. I don't think he'll ever get a better shot to make it with this team again. Why wouldn't he get a shot next season? Zambrano FA Hill Marmol/Mateo Prior/either Mateo or Marmol/Marshall Seems to be the pecking order in my mind. I still don't see why he won't get a shot next season. You can't just write in Mateo/Marmol/Marshall - there has to be some sort of competition in the spring.
  9. Can't believe he blew a big chance to make it big. he has only shown very brief flashes of success. I don't think he'll ever get a better shot to make it with this team again. Why wouldn't he get a shot next season? He probably will because it's the Cubs and they're going to have 80 injured pitchers again, but he hasn't done anything to deserve it. What had Marshall done to deserve a starting spot last March? He had just 10 starts above AA and had injuries in each of his first two pro seasons. He earned it with a strong spring training. It's possible that Guzman will be better when he's not in his first season back from injury.
  10. Can't believe he blew a big chance to make it big. he has only shown very brief flashes of success. I don't think he'll ever get a better shot to make it with this team again. Maybe as a reliever, but I don't see him having any success at all as a starter. His numbers out of the pen are pretty good. His numbers as a starter are Glendon-like. He's also coming off 2.5 years of missing time and has not shown the control and command of his pitches that he had prior to his injury and surgeries. His velocity is all the way back, his curve is improving (as he's scrapped his slider). I expect to see the same Guzman as in 2003 with the rust gone next season.

  12. Gooz: 4+ IP, 4 ER, 8 H, 4 BB, 1 K, 81 pitches. Nomar is his responsibility. Angel is still struggling with his control - I still think this is rust from the practically 2.5 year layoff.
  13. Guzman: 4 IP, 2 ER, 6 H, 3 BB, 1 K, 67 pitches.
  14. ...has hit for the cycle today against the Tiggers.
  15. I don't think very many people would question that-it's just if he was worth 13 million for a slightly above average offensive shortstop that has serious question marks defensively as well. Furcal has serious question marks defensively? That's news to me. To be fair, the price for Pierre is 3 pitching prospects, including 2 top-10 prospects.
  16. Gooz: 3 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 2 BB, 1 K, 46 pitches.
  17. On the LA broadcast, they just showed a fan with a paper bag on his face.
  18. Well, the air isn't heavy enough to hold Furcal. Angel should have beaned him, instead.
  19. Billingsley will likely be starting Saturday.
