  1. sounds like you are rooting against him. Doesn't sound like that to me. Sounds like he's suggesting it's too early for people to be saying, "I told you so." Especially when Jones has had two full poor seasons before this one. BTW, I sure wish Jones were more "patient" himself. .339 OBP... Out of our everyday RF (who is probably overachieving at the moment)... Count me as "not all that impressed." It's not Jacque's fault, though. It's Hendry's. Considering the fact that we're probably stuck with him for 3 years, "Go Jacque!" As for the All Star team, I think Barrett and Zambrano are much more likely. With Pujols out for 6 weeks now, even Lee might be more likely (depending on when he gets back and how he does).
  2. I'm just guessing...but does the context have something to do with rehab stints (probably because Prior got hit pretty hard)? In that context, it SORT OF makes sense. They're all excited to face an ML pitcher and they go out there and swing away...meanwhile Prior (or whatever pitcher) is just trying to throw strikes.
  3. OMC's coherent posts in Rants & Rivalries were definitely not from the same time frame.
  4. nevin at 1b, walker at 2b, womack in left is my guess. My guess is Walker at 1B, Womack at 2B, and Nevin as a pinch hitter/double switch for Jacque Jones. Womack will start "Because he knows the park dude" that would be tuff since it is brand new this season :D OK, OK.. Dude, he knows the city. He knows how to play in St. Louis, you know what I mean? You gotta know how to work in St. Louis before you know how to play in St. Louis. 'Mac has been there, done that, dude.
  5. I can't say I'm all that surprised. I put it all on the coaching staff(s). They all wanted to turn Corey into a slap (crap) hitter. With the comments we've heard from these coaches over the years, I also doubt they were doing much to emphasize his plate discipline. They were almost certainly preaching the very aggressiveness that got him into so much trouble. This team's management... I just... hate it. At this point, I am just rooting for the name, because I am so strongly opposed to the way this team is run that it frustrates the HELL out of me. There's no end in sight. Hendry was just re-upped. He's chomping at the bit to re-sign Dusty. How can I root for this team when they are committed to doing everything the wrong way? I saw the whole walks "clog the bases" thing again in a thread recently. It was so depressing. How can a man be this idiotic? How can a man employed to run a major league baseball team be this baseball-stupid? For our own manager to ask if the winners of the World Series the last few years were concerned with OBP, and then to use the Yankees as an example? For one, the Yankees haven't even won one since 2000. On top of that, they STILL have been one of the most patient teams in baseball through all these years. Worse yet, if I remember right, he said it early in 2005...just after the Red Sox had won it. Were the Red Sox concerned with OBP? Wow. Just Wow. /rant I realize I just went totally off the thread topic. Oh, well.
  6. The entirety of that sucker is a classic: I think walks are overrated unless you can run," Baker said. "If you get a walk and put the pitcher in a stretch, that helps. But the guy who walks and can't run, most of the time they're clogging up the bases for somebody who can run." That kind of talk is nothing short of heresy for those in the OBP-is-king camp. Baker, an old-school sort, doesn't seem to mind. "Who's been the champions the last seven, eight years?" he asked "Have you ever heard the Yankees talk about on-base percentage and walks? Walks help. But you ain't going to walk across the plate. You're going to hit across the plate. That's the school I come from. "It's called hitting, and it ain't called walking. Do you ever see the top 10 walking? You see top 10 batting average. A lot of those top 10 do walk. But the name of the game is to hit." Seeing this again just makes me sad. :(
  7. He could be 10 for his last 10 and any trade that gets Tony Womack less playing time is still a good one. can we be sure that this results in less playing time for womack? walker could be the one screwed here. I'm not saying we can. I'm just responding to the sentiment expressed in the post I quoted. But I do highly doubt that Dusty would put Womack ahead of Walker on the depth chart.
  8. He could be 10 for his last 10 and any trade that gets Tony Womack less playing time is still a good one.
  9. Three more words: 1998 Gary Gaieti. Hey, a guy can dream right? I would only take it if he's not brought back for the following year, ala 1999 Gary Gaetti.
  10. At least he's patient. OBP isn't that bad considering his average. How's his BABIP?
  11. These guys are beasts. When I was in Little League, a teammate of mine, broke his wrist, though not as bad. He was in a cast for 4 weeks. And he was back and mashing the ball 2 weeks after the cast was removed. As for Prior, he is just a big who can't tell the difference b/t pain and soreness. You might want to watch the language when making blanket statements about things you probably know nothing about. Of course, anybody who fits your description would come back and pitch with a fracture from a line drive to the elbow.
  12. I thought he had no BB? Could've been wild in the zone, not hitting his spots. That (along with the lack-luster stuff) would explain the way he got smacked around.
  13. Hasn't Wood been in the low 90's.. 91-92.. in his first few starts (he started out a little higher today)? That's a good 3-4 mph below what you would expect out of him. Normally, I expect Prior to be in the 92-93 range, on rarer occasions hitting 95... Today he was, what, 88-89... So both are down about 3 or 4 mph from their normal selves.
  14. When did it become a "one or the other" proposition?
  15. I think you're falsely correlating low K totals with patience. As you said, his walk totals were never anything great. There are tons of hitters that aren't patient that barely strike out, i.e. our (s)crappy leadoff man. On the other hand, some of the most patient hitters have very high strikeout totals (i.e. Dunn). They almost go hand in hand. If you're taking a lot of pitches, you're also taking more strikes.
  16. My guess is they probably aren't sac bunting enough, or aren't gritting their teeth hard enough. They need more gritty gamer types.
  17. No. I think it's just you.
  18. Is the sky blue?
  19. Why did that guy even bring that point up? It has no relevance whatsoever. So he just so happened to be Aaron's teammate and just so happened to be batting behind Aaron that day. You know what that's called? Luck. It's not even luck. It's just happenstance. What the hell does it even mean that he was on the on-deck circle? It's like, "Um, OK, thanks for telling us." He's using that as support for his statement that Dusty deserves better. OK. "Officer, I was in the stands at Wrigley Field when Sammy Sosa hit his 62nd home run. Can you let me go with a warning?" Dumbest thing I've ever seen.
  20. Billy Beane: .219/.246/.296 Meanwhile, out of all these guys, Gary Matthews had the best numbers with a .364 career OBP. Means nothing in terms of their coaching ability/philosophy.
  21. Glad you enjoyed it! 8)
  22. Right. Because we don't know what happens next. Are you in denial? Do you not see a patern here? If we have a patern repeat itself 5 times, isn't that a pretty good indication that it will repeat again? Since he made his last start there's a 100% chance he'll make this next start. It's called math, people. HAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHA GREAT!
  23. I don't see where the "shot" at Ramirez is. He compares him to one of the best "supporting players" of all time. That line "...in Baker's words" seems to me like irresponsible journalism. Nothing new coming from Paul Sullivan. He's referring to Baker's words, "great supporting actor," while making it seem to the reader like Baker is the one who said that Ramirez isn't being paid $10.5 mil for such a role. I see no such evidence in the article that Dusty was the one saying it. It's Sullivan's point, not Dusty's. Now, if there's an actual quote from Dusty where he says that, I retract what I just said (except that Sullivan sucks). More crap journalism from who else? Paul Sullivan.
  24. Me and my friends were high-fiving about our off-season earlier in the year. We were so innocent then... I'm not sure if you're being serious....but if you are, what exactly was it that got you excited?
  25. You do know that throwing too much at a very early age can essentially ruin a pitcher for life, right?
