  1. There are few offensive upgrades out there in the FA market, and even if you sign one of them, you're right back to status quo, really. You'd have to sign 2 good offensive players if you deal Aramis But you also wouldn't have to worry about getting another SP because of Santana. It's a pretty big risk, but if you feel that Ramirez is likely to opt out, I'd be real tempted to do it and insert myself in a deal for Ensberg.
  2. I think one of the only things that makes Tejada more valuable than Aramis is that he plays shortstop, and don't the angels intend on him playing third? Tejada is more durable and would probably be a better defender, but Ramirez has age, contract, and overall production on his side.
  3. He's a career .360 OBP guy in the minors while being very young for his levels. I agree he doesn't take a ton of walks, but he doesn't really strike out a lot and has shown an ability to hit for average. I don't have my prospect handbook with me, how's his defense supposed to be?
  4. Intriguing. On an unrelated note, The Baseball Cube has statistics for this year, although they aren't updated daily.
  5. isn't the meathook raking since his return? He is. I think they could still use another person. These talks about Soriano to the Tigers don't make sense to me as far as what they'd have to give up compared to them being something like 95% likely to make the playoffs without him. I think they just need a tweak or two, and Walker would be one. Polanco hasn't been any good for them at the plate either.
  6. Blalock isn't all that good. Arlington hides his inadequacies somewhat, but even then his overall production isn't all that great.
  7. I'm still not understanding the overworking of the young pitchers. The pitchers at risk of being overworked(Z, Marshall, Marmol) will get their starts if they are healthy regardless of whether Maddux is there or not. Hill and Guzman aren't on the brink of setting IP highs, and they're the ones taking Maddux's innings if he's traded.
  8. FA rankings have some weight to position, don't they? Given Todd's great '05 and "not bad" '06, I wouldn't be surprised to see him be a Type A.
  9. Right after the contract was signed, didn't Aramis make some comment about how the out clause was there, but he wasn't going to use it, or something flippant to that extent? Obviously things have changed, but I think it's a little telling of the importance he placed on it at the time. Of course players have agents for a reason, and Aramis's may have stressed that even though Aramis wasn't interested in leaving at the time.
  10. How long is Smith out though?
  11. I think this is the first deal in which I would trade Z. Again, this is extremely hypothetical. But I'm not trading Z for just anybody. If I'm trading Zambrano, I have to get an arm back for him. Despite that being the best combo of 3 offensive prospects in the league, I still wouldn't do it for Zambrano. I wouldn't do the deal either, but not because there's no pitching involved. I'm not narrow-minded(for lack of a better phrase) to eliminate the possibility of trading Z, but if we were to explore dealing him, I don't think it's overly excessive to expect at least one player that has had Major League experience. Not even a stud like a Cabrera, Tejada, etc, but someone who will be a solid contributor at the Major League level with much more certainty than the prospect(s) who haven't reached that level yet.
  12. There's been many comments from younger pitchers about talking to Maddux and sticking around him to hope to pick up nuggets of information here and there. That said, is keeping Maddux around for 8 weeks going to make a significant impact for the young starters who have already been around him for a while(since March in Marshall's case)? I don't think that's the case, and then there's the catch-22 of him taking up a spot in the rotation for other players he'd be able to mentor. With Zambrano, Prior, Marshall, Marmol, Hill, and Guzman, I'm not significantly worried about overworking the rotation, especially since Rusch will still be around to suck for a day if someone really needs it. And if Maddux is traded for a player that doesn't take up a 40 man spot, then you might even see Wells or Gallagher take that role and become an option by September, which also brings up the fact that it's nigh impossible to overwork a pitching staff once the rosters expand.
  13. I don't disagree at all, but what other arms were there in Houston besides Oswalt? All I can think of is Elarton.
  14. Well, that is pretty depressing. A mid level prospect and pick up the rest of his salary? Might as well keep him if that is all he will fetch. Why keep him? The guy hasn't been very good this year, I wouldn't expect a ton more than a middling prospect, although picking up his salary should help the return.
  15. We may need a suicide watch for Burnt after he chose Smith as a keeper over Holt.
  16. That guy was at today's game(I only saw the "Benedict Mabry" and "Web Jim" signs) and he was at the Cubs/Cards series in STL last year when I went. It's pretty sad that someone goes to such lengths to create literally a dozen commercial quality signs just to rail on a rival team. IIRC he also has a customized Cardinal jersey with Bartman and 08 as the name and number.
  17. Kinda thinking out loud here, but when thinking about Colvin in the future in the outfield, does anyone else see a Mark Kotsay type?
  18. Cut for Cap Space takes Alge Crumpler, TE, Atlanta
