  1. When you hit as few XBH's as Theriot, it has to be looked at as a negative. Power is not just home runs, it's doing things leadoff and number two hitters are supposed to do, hitting doubles and triples to get yourself into scoring position by yourself. I know what power is. I don't expect it from guys whose main purpose is to get on base. If Theriot doubles rather than getting a single, that's great. But I'm not going to look down on him if he doesn't hit for a lot of extra base hits. With Lee and Ramirez (and hopefully a good number five hitter next year) hitting behind him, simply getting on base is good enough for the number two hitter in my opinion. There's far too many players out there who can do what Theriot can't to make him any more than a bench player.

  3. It's the HR's that are skewing his SLG. He's hit one every 42 at bats, compared to once every 410 in the minors. take a look at torii hunter's minor leauge stats. how does a guy with 42 career minor leauge hr's in 6 years and a career sluggin % under .400 hit 25-30 each year in the majors? according to your logic it shouldnt be happening but it is. Torii Hunter reached AAA at age 23. At the same age, Theriot started the year in Low A. You have to use minor league numbers in the proper context, age relative to level is very very important. As an aside, Hunter's minor league numbers(269/.334/.416/.750) are not vastly different from his major league numbers(.267/.320/.458/.778).
  4. I hope so. The weekend really needs to come.
  5. Very few players hit for as little power as Theriot.
  6. Obviously. That's not the freaking point. You can't just take a short time frame and multiply it to determine what a guy will do. When's he going to cool down, my man? Maybe, just maybe, we might have something here. With all the numbers being thrown around here, why not just look at what he has done in the Minors, and accept the fact that the Cubs may just have a pretty decent ball player? Except what he did in the minors isn't even close to what he's doing in this short stint. And I don't think I can emphasize enough how different his minor league career is from this stretch.
  7. Congratulations!! Best of luck with the house and the wedding.
  8. Contract incentives cannot be tied to performance measures like wins or saves. The only "performance" incentives MLB allows are for awards like MVP, Cy Young, All-Star game, etc. Many relievers have incentives for Games Finished.
  9. I wish he had completely dominated his competition at AA, but that's simply not the case. 86.1 IP 74 H 55 BB 91 K A 1.49 WHIP doesn't usually translate to a 2.71 ERA, even if the strikeout rate is over one an inning. He got lucky on his AA ERA, no two ways about it. That's not to say it wasn't a solid showing for a young kid. Holding your own when you're young for the league is enough to make you a good prospect in my eyes. But he wasn't nearly so dominating as you're making him out to be. Don't let any of this make you think that I somehow don't like Gallagher. He's one of my favorite prospects. But he didn't dominate AA, and he isn't seen that highly in the eyes of other GMs around the league (as far as I've heard, anyways). That's all I'm saying. To be fair though, the only thing out of the ordinary is the walks. He actually gave up fewer hits(probably because he was walking people who did so before), and his K/9 and HR rate were as good as they've ever been.
  10. He just turned 25. Players that are as highly heralded as Crawford that break into the big leagues at his age are there for a reason. Look at Beltran for a comparison. Crawford isn't drawing as many walks as Beltran did at that stage, but Beltran still had a drastic improvement as he entered his prime. Crawford is known to have an outstanding work ethic, improving his IsoD significantly(to say, .070) is far from unrealistic.
  11. They had the coin flip, the game would be in Houston.
  12. Go get Durham and Schmidt/Zito. Durham Murton Lee Ramirez Crawford Barrett Jones Izturis Z, Schmidt/Zito/trade target(Hudson?), Marshall/Marmol/Guzman/Mateo/Miller/Prior/Ryu/Gallagher are up for the last 3 spots.
  13. B/C it's far easier to fill in 3 holes than 4. Everyone needs starting pitching. If you can't make the playoffs with a rotation of Z/Hill/?/?/?, then you're definitely not making it with a rotation of Z/?/?/?/?, especially when the bulk of those unknowns are going to be filled in with Free Agents. Our rotation is barren, especially if Prior and Miller don't make their starts. Why make the problem worse by trading away a potential #2 making the league minimum? Crawford doesn't win you more games in CF than Hill does in the rotation (over their expected replacements). Rotation depth gets you to the playoffs in the absence of a great offense (Crawford doesn't give us that). We need more SP, not less. You also aren't going to to make the playoffs without getting more offensive production either. We've put ourself in a position where we have to trade pitching because that's what we draft and develop. Crawford is a pretty elite young talent, so it's going to cost us the best of our young pitching. It's also being lost that trading for Crawford can make Pie expendable. What happens if we trade Hill for Crawford then ship Pie and, say Atkins to Florida for Anibal Sanchez?
  14. But here's the thing - adding Crawford adds only 4 million for 2007, a cost made up by pursuing a couple 1 million dollar bench players (or cheaper) instead of some higher profile 2.5 million bench guys. In other words, you can almost wash the salary of Crawford while adding an .850 OPS CF to your roster. So adding Crawford could allow the team to also add Soriano and Schmidt, while retaining Ramirez. The opportunity cost of losing Hill is worth it, IMO. What if you can't sign Schmidt or Zito? There are other teams out there with deep pockets, you know. I've never heard either of those players express interest in Chicago. Then you're looking at a rotation of Zambrano and who else? Prior and Miller shouldn't be counted on at all. Our young uns need more time in the minors and shouldn't be viewed as anything other than #5 starters. Crawford doesn't make your offense so overwelming that you can get away with one ace and a bunch of rookies. You don't make the playoffs with a rotation that barren. I'm not seeing how keeping Hill with that group somehow legitimizes the rotation.
  15. They're still only a game behind the Astros.
  16. That's the first thing that came to my mind.
  17. I would think this would rub a lot of coaching types the wrong way. Larry was the outsider forced on Baker from the start, and he was treated seperately from all other coaches all along. Now he would be the one guy retained despite the fact that the pitching was probably the one thing that most let down Baker? Did the pitching let down Baker, or did Baker let down the pitching? Which came first, the butcher or the steak?
  18. FWIW, the Twins are averaging over 27k per game, which is 56.6% of the Metrodome's capacity. That ranks 19th and 22nd in MLB respectively. Not a lot of people buy up those Royals games at the beginning of the season.
  19. I don't understand the logic in moving Pie to RF. He only fits well offensively there in his best case projection. I'm not saying that because Pie is around, don't go after Crawford, but if you do get Crawford then you can use Pie in that deal or another deal.
  20. On the other hand, wasn't their inability to run the ball early in those games part of the reason for those early deficits?
  21. Vance picks up another point from Deuce, and Roast and Tobias each add one. Vance is now up 2, and Roast maintains a 1 point advantage.
  22. They've got 3 right now, and Atlanta's defense hasn't scored a point, so you're up 1 at the moment.
  23. Vance has his 6 points, now he needs to avoid a lost fumble from Deuce or Colston. Also, with Vick and Dunn having terrible nights, a defensive TD might propel Tobias to the upset over Roast.
