  1. 1. Come on Jed, where's your sense of adventure 2. The bench is now 4 RHH(Amaya/Gomes, Canario, Madrigal, Wisdom/Cooper) most days. Yes, there aren't many starters you'd want to pinch hit for with a LHH(basically just a C that you replace afterward with the backup), but I still find this odd. There's not so many PAs available for RHH bench players as is, why not keep the guy who hits LHH, is your best pinch runner, and can fake it basically anywhere defensively?
  2. You're thinking of the minor leagues, who play 7 inning games for DH's. Still 9 innings at the big league level, but both teams get an extra roster spot to call up a pitcher.
  3. I'm still not sure what the position player is, but I imagine we'll know since the departing player probably isn't staying in Chicago? On the pitching side though, in theory they could push Taillon one more day to Saturday and let him be the 27th man so there's no need to remove a bullpen arm until his next start, which in theory could be pushed all the way to the Boston series if you let Brown start one of the Houston games. EDIT: You could also start Brown on Sunday, that would be 5 days rest and give Hendricks 2 extra days to rest/work out whatever he's dealing with. That would remove Brown as a long man this weekend and make the DH more risky, especially for Taillon's first start. Maybe you decide after seeing how much the pen gets used tomorrow if you keep Shota on schedule.
  4. I wonder if the pitch mix is influenced by repeat outings against the same team too. Probably next to impossible to control for in Alzolay's sample size, but the thesis might be that he gets more slider heavy when he sees hitters multiple times in a series since his fastball isn't the wipeout pitch that other elite relievers possess.
  5. Two more walks for Shaw, now at a 8/9 K/BB to pair with his 1.331 OPS. Elsewhere in walks, Arias is off to a better start in that department, 8/3 K/BB in 7 IP.
  6. Pulling Wesneski feels too clever by half, he's cruising, on 4 days rest, and has thrown 60+ pitches multiple times at Iowa. You've got a 3 run cushion so at least let him concede a baserunner since you're facing the bottom half.
  7. Busch placing that like he was angry they preferred to walk Morel to face him
  8. If it's Wisdom coming back to Chicago, it's little weird that they couldn't decide before or after the game, especially since the roster problem he might solve isn't a super urgent one.
  9. I kinda wonder if they just eat the innings today with whoever is planned to go down for Taillon, presumably Palencia or Thompson. I doubt they'd make a 40 man move for this very short term crisis, which makes the only practical option probably Wesneski, who you might not want to disrupt just to eat a couple innings on getaway day. It might be difficult to physically get someone to Phoenix in time too.
  10. I think I said it elsewhere, but to the degree that Adbert has a problem it's one in his control, and that's throwing *too many* strikes, so it's less concerning than someone being unable to find the plate or having every pitch get torched. As an aside on the HR itself, that's the sorta thing that makes me side-eye some of the exit velo data. I know it was a quick stroke and clearly it was hit hard enough to have the distance, but it was on a slider and frankly off the bat it did not look like 110 mph(2nd highest in a game with tons of rocket shots).
  11. sigh, Cubs are still looking for their first extra inning win since 1986
  12. Randall Grichuk looks like a college lacrosse player (derogatory)
  13. got to give extra innings credit, every one somehow becomes more annoying than the last
  14. Dansby has not been up to his standard defensively so far this year
  15. legit thought Gurriel might end his own career on that play
  16. Leave in Leiter to get Carroll, then Almonte until he hits trouble and Alzolay can finish?
  17. he had a 1.000 OPS entering that plate appearance! (I would not have guessed that with a lot of guesses)
  18. going to a LHP with no outs seems like a curious move with Morel and Cooper waiting behind Cody
