  1. Because you still need 4 more innings after this one after the pen threw 5 innings yesterday, and it was the start of a RHH dense portion of the lineup so you go with him to try and stop the bleeding against Hernandez and then then hopefully a few more outs unless he hits trouble or gets to Betts. But if you walk Hernandez without challenging him then you have the one remaining LHH to get past and that burned them.
  2. This 'spin the wheel to see if your pitch on the edge is a strike this time' zone is so frustrating to watch
  3. Justice for the .210 xBA single and the 74 mph EV single from earlier in the inning
  4. Freddie Freeman is 4 months older than Hendricks, I call shenanigans
  5. can't wait for Ohtani to hit this 2-0 pitch to the moon when it should be 1-1
  6. The thing that I forgot about Smyly last year until recently is that he wasn't Shawn Estes the whole year until he got moved to the pen, on June 27th he had a 3.38 ERA in a half-season's worth of starts. So I think we should be open to the idea that he got out of sync in some way(e.g. minor injury that begat mechanical issues) and the move to the pen ended up being the scenery change that got him back on track.
  7. I would characterize today as having unlucky defense cost him 2 runs in the first, and then several really good hitters squaring him up the 3rd time through the order. I don't think there's anything particularly problematic about that, those guys either won't be in other lineups or Hendricks will have a little better endurance to hit spots later in the year and mitigate some of that. Against Texas he got beat around more, but that also was an excellent lineup.
  8. still thinking about the obvious 1-1 strike Hendricks didn't get to Betts
  9. I feel like Hoerner made it look easy enough that many are not going to appreciate just how absurd it was. Diving arm side while also getting an in between hop so he fielded it above his head mid-dive, then getting up on the grass and firing a bullet to get a very fast runner in Lux.
  10. goodness gracious that is an absolutely insane play by Hoerner, very possible the team doesn't make a better one all year
  11. the Madrigal web gems will continue until morale improves
  12. I don't think they quite have the upside in the middle of the order, but this lineup is gonna be up there with 2016 in terms of just being a relentless slog to go through.
  13. do you think Prior told him 'watch out for line drives at the elbow' during that mound visit
  14. All you need is the URL of the tweet, if that gives you issues try getting rid of everything after the question mark you might see in the URL(including the question mark itself).
  15. They look like the Philly Jawns, brought to you by Ed Hardy
  16. I vaguely recall the Petriello tweet, but what I was mostly reacting to was Bryan Smith pointing out 2023 numbers: There's some room for optimism given the peripherals and I don't want to suggest that's a permanent state of being for him, but as part of trying to win games and balance workloads I do think that's a place where we may see him shielded a bit. They currently aren't slated to face a LHSP for the next 3 series at least so he won't be in/out on strict platoon grounds for a while either.
  17. Really hard to see how this could be a positive in any way, absent other rule changes to keep the downsides in check. More roster spots just means more relievers/pitcher specialization, lengthening games and taking us further down the track of pitchers being anonymized like NFL running backs. Same thing with longer benches that promote more platoons. In both cases you'd see suppressed service time/arb salaries/FA contracts as a result, so aside from the extra service time days for the ~900th best player in the game, there's not much upside for players either. You could change some rules to hedge against this(double hook DH, overhaul service time), but you should do those anyway since there's no compelling benefit to upping rosters. The sport doesn't become more compelling with arbitrarily deeper benches, it's the opposite in practice in all likelihood.
  18. Jokes aside, this will be an interesting first test of how optimized Counsell wants to make matchups. In AAA Busch was not great against elite velo, combined with Hendricks GB tendencies it might be a good day to go with Tauchman and Madrigal and push Busch to the bench(Bellinger 1B, Morel DH)
  19. I mean this in the nicest way possible since I want them to succeed too: stop putting Canario in a class with PCA, Alcantara, and other current MLB starters. He's a 4th OF, every org has a version of him. Maybe he hits his 95th percentile outcome and becomes non-peak Marcell Ozuna, but when that's your 95th percentile outcome it kinda tells you what you need to know about their outlook. Combine that with Alcantara being a year behind, Bellinger's potential opt out, and one or both of Caissie/Seiya probably being a DH in 2025+, it's a problem that will almost certainly resolve itself.
  20. Hendricks against the Dodgers at Wrigley? You know what time it is
