  1. The analysis isn't win shares, it's extrapolating runs above replacement to wins.
  2. Can you explain why? Because it just seems wrong? Again, the difference over a full season between the best and worst teams is about 30-35 wins, spread over 25+ players. It's not that inconceivable that the difference between a mediocre to bad 3B and a good one over 1/3 to 1/4 of a season is about a win.
  3. Aaron Miles can't play shortstop, and Bobby Scales probably can't either. Scales obviously won't keep this up, but he's done a nice job of working counts and turning on pitches to hit. I wonder how well he handles the inside pitch, it almost seems as if he crowds the plate hoping for a pitch on the outer half he can hook into right field.
  4. That's their MO now because they took Colvin and Barney(who is hitting for now)? Thomas can hit, Flaherty can hit, and Donaldson can hit.
  5. Gaudin? Gaudin isn't spanking anybody. 1 hit 1 run and a bunch of walks through 4. We should be doing better. And about 4 near home runs. Gaudin isn't fooling anyone.
  6. UZR has Miles as a -17/150 defender at SS in 111 career games(He's -2/150 at 2B in nearly 3 season's worth, fwiw). You can't tell me he's any better than say, Fontenot would be.
  7. The issue would be backup SS. Is Freel capable at SS? Scales is more of a 2nd base/ 3rd base guy. Miles isn't a backup SS either.
  8. That is Jackson's final line, as he gives way to Cales, who mows down the side by striking out two and getting a groundout to 1B.
  9. Mixed bag for Cashner. 2.2 IP, 5 H(all 1B), 2 ER, 4/1 K/BB, WP, 2 HBP Pretty solid outing for Jackson. 6 IP, 5 H(1 2B), 2 ER, 5/2 K/BB. He's only at 87 pitches so he may come out for the 7th. Also for Tennessee, Thomas is 1 for 2 with a walk, and Smith is 2 for 3 with a double and K.
  10. Whoever ranked Kansas State in the Top 25 should be beaten with a hose.
  11. Lineup: Soriano Theriot Fukudome Lee Bradley Fontenot Soto Miles Harden
  12. Why wouldn't we? Ascanio is only 24, has always had great stuff, and went from putting up decent numbers in the pen in AAA last year to putting up tremendous numbers in the rotation in AAA this year. A 5.10 era and 1.41 whip (2008) is 'decent'? I think he needs some more time in the minors, is all. Yes. He had a good K rate and K/BB, his main problem was a flukish amount of HR, which was way out of line with anything he's done before or since that season at Iowa. I agree with keeping him at Iowa to develop stamina and refine his stuff, like I said earlier in the thread.
  13. How robotish does one have to be to believe all these versions of win shares? Any science that has Freel as one game less than Armais over 6 weeks is flawed beyond belief. How much do you think it is? Remember, the difference over a full season between the best and worst teams is about 30-35 wins, spread over 25 players. It's not that inconceivable that the difference between a mediocre to bad 3B and a good one over 1/3 of a season is about a win.
  14. The new Smokies make an immediate impact. Canzler is 3 for 3, and Cales went 1.1 perfect with a K. Thomas is 1 for 3 with a walk and K, and Gaub got a K and a groundout to push the game into extras.
  15. That would make sense if it was about playing SS. Probably not about pitching; he pitched more innings in one freshman year at Mizzou than he did the following year at UIC. And if Mizzou-UIC was about playing time, that still leaves unanswered the question of why he didn't play as a junior. (Injury was not the reason, I believe he was either ineligible or else he quit or something.) Even if Mizzou-UIC was about PT, that's unusual to voluntarily take such a huge step down in competitive level when he had plenty of opportunity as a pitcher. He did make one more appearance at UIC, but perhaps that's why he left there too and transferred to St. Xavier(where he didn't pitch/play) the next year.
  16. Why wouldn't we? Ascanio is only 24, has always had great stuff, and went from putting up decent numbers in the pen in AAA last year to putting up tremendous numbers in the rotation in AAA this year.
  17. You can't commit an error on a ball you never touch. I don't see much use in debating who's most likely to earn the votes, compared to who's actually earned the award. Braun's unsustainable start doesn't even bring him to Pujols' level, and I really have my doubts he's going to continue his peripherals from this season(25% LD%, .395 BABIP, 29% HR/F, etc.). Once those come down to earth I think you'll see the erosion of that improved BB rate. As far as names of people who would be more deserving, Pujols is a no brainer, then you have guys like Berkman, Utley, HanRam, Wright, even Beltran.
  18. It might have been Ping that said this, but to my memory, Cales left Mizzou because he wanted the opportunity to pitch more and he wasn't going to get that opportunity in Columbia
  19. Braun didn't make the Top 15 in NL wOBA last year and he's a terrible defender in left field.
  20. Wooo Cales. Hopefully he can keep it going in AA. There's quite a bullpen in Tennessee now. Parker, Gaub, Cales, Perkins, even Schlitter and Maestri.
  21. Soriano has the most effective outfield arm in baseball, and overall he's relatively easily above average defensively.
  22. In the video on MLB.com of Soriano's 2 run shot last night, the Brewers announcers blast Soriano's defense. I thought this was weird, I didn't watch the game, but the Cubs had no errors, so unless Soriano just did something dumb out there I'm really not sure why they were talking about it. Beyond that, is Soriano's defense actually bad in LF? I know he's had some memorable mistakes out there - last year in pittsburgh and St. Louis, namely - but I would think his range and his arm would make up for it.
