  1. It would thin the bullpen a little bit, but I like the idea of Ascanio with Samardzija piggybacking.
  2. Why? They take his first start and most recent start without any attention to the other two(since it's only two starts it's not like it's a ton of legwork). Harden's repertoire is such that both the data collected and the way they present it is misleading. Harden throws essentially the same pitch at varying speeds. Considering His first start was against the Brewers, a team with several disciplined hitters, it's not surprising for him to throw comparatively more "off speed" stuff against the Marlins, a team whose best hitters are younger and more free swingers. Furthermore, the lumping together of percentages of pitches at a certain velocity, especially bands as tight as a few mph, is misleading. It would not take very many pitches to influence those percentages in a large way, whether they were intentionally thrown with less on them, Milwaukee's Pitch f/x gun is slightly different than Chicago's, or if he were actually hiding an injury. It's a lazily thrown together piece, like someone went looking for data to support a conclusion.
  3. I will ban you without a second thought.
  4. Searle especially is becoming an exciting prospect, doing this at 19 in Daytona. His last 3 starts: 16 IP, 0 ER, 5 H(all singles), 9/2 K/BB, 27-11 GO-FO
  5. At least this way Bradley knows that he shouldn't try to strike out.
  6. That was worse than Theriot's swing, what a joke.
  7. The Bears picked up Chase Patton, hooray
  8. Color me A-OK with Fontenot at 3rd if the alternative is Bobby Scales,Tony Graffanino, or even Jake Fox.
  9. Well, Hinrich did seem to trip on his own feet.
  10. I agree with your analysis, but I still think that the pitchers that the Cubs received were part of the overall plan, either to be part of the package or to replace the pitching prospects in the deal. Yeah, I don't mean to imply Hendry didn't want Stevens, Gaub, and Archer at all. What I'm saying in exaggerated form is that Hendry thought he had a deal for Peavy and thought "I gotta get rid of DeRosa to stay under budget cause I don't have an owner and can't risk being over budget for even a second", and therefore got a less than maximum return for him.
  11. Congratulations on proving manbearcub right.
  12. The explanation that makes the most sense to me is that Hendry thought he had Peavy in the bag, and needed to move DeRosa's salary to fit him in. Then the Peavy deal fell apart, Hendry realized it wasn't going to happen, and got stuck with a meager return because he rushed to deal DeRosa. Then he compounded his mistake by giving Miles his deal because he had that breathing room money wise.
  13. UZR has Greene being awful so far this year, and has him being awful last year as well. Combine that with Duncan being awful when he plays, Ankiel not being very good since no one runs on his arm, and Schumaker being bad , and it's not hard to see them being a mediocre defensive team. Maybe not lead the majors in errors bad, but that's not really an important distinction anyway.
  14. Vitters went 2 for 4 with a double. Opitz had a nice first game with Daytona, going 2 for 4. Cales threw another scoreless inning. His season totals: 9.2 IP, 7 H, 1 ER(a HR), 7/3 K/BB, and a GO/FO of about 2.
  15. Is he that far behind because of missing time? Is that why he only went three? Yeah, they're building up his pitch count after he started the year in Mesa rehabbing his oblique injury.
  16. Embarrassing work by BP there.
  17. Slugging is supposed to be much higher than OBP. Rasmus will be fine in all likelihood, although Meph's roundabout point about him not showing much power is a valid one. 3 doubles in 70 PA's is less than even his tempered rookie year expectations.
  18. Wrigley Rat pointed out yesterday that Matulia went on the DL for Iowa, so the roster spot is still there.
  19. The Cubs have a DER of .700 thru Wednesday, 9th in MLB. Last year it was .705, 2nd in MLB. The Cubs have a UZR of -0.7, which is -2.0 per 150 games, 18th in MLB. Last year it was +11.0 for a +2.3 UZR/150, 10th in MLB.
  20. The Cubs are just not any fun to watch right now. The downside of their offseason moves was losing depth, and it seems like they want to jam that point down everyone's throat with the injuries(Ramirez, Bradley) and unexpected hideousness(Soto; Bradley; Lee and Dempster despite lowered expectations; Gregg and Marmol). The good news is that despite an extended stretch of ugly and uninspired baseball they're only a game below .500. Marshall continues to impress as well. For all the lamenting that has been done about Wood and justifiably about DeRosa, Marshall is making the Peavy non-deal look good by outpitching him thus far by quite a bit.
  21. It hit him in the pocket of the glove and he didn't catch it, that's incredible.
